Harold Park has well and truly gone way past its "use by" date. Facilities poor, stabling deplorable.
  • pretty sure I just heard David Raphael call a race there :P

You actually heard Daren Flindell not David Raphael.
  • oh yeah - knew there was a Hong Kong connection

By at least 21 years. I was there in 1989 and couldn't believe how bad it was then.

The track had a $20m facelift in 1995. The cushioned seats in the tiered, indoor grand stand are (were) sensational.

It was a wonderful night. I had many great conversations with many long time attendees of the Old Lady. I even won very well on the night which was a huge plus. Whatever the TAB turnover I reckon you could double it. The bookies never got a moments peace.

I watched the last race with an 81 year old gentleman named Norm Woods. He backed the first winner on the card on 1 October 1949, the first ever race conducted under lights at Harold Park. We both cheered home Karloo Mick in race 10, meaning he also backed the winner of the last race ever held under lights at Harold Park.
