That's him. I also believe he climbed into the top of the Randwick Grandstand and threatened to throw himself off unless they cleaned up racing.

He was subsequently barred but gained access to the course during a Randwick meeting by ringing the course to tell them that a man with a rifle had jumped the back fence. When all the security personnel were bailing up a groundsman with a turf prodder in the back straight he went through the front gate.

The intensity was remarkable. Last time saw him at the TAB he was laying them for a place on Betfair as well. The phone was in constant use. The form guide could go flying through the air.

When Mark had a win all I remember is contentment. Nothing else. Just peace and quiet. But still simmering! I was fascinated how a hoop could cop it so badly and the race not even half over. Will never see a punter like him again.

Wow, a blast from the past. I didn't know Mark but you could never forget that bloke. As mad as a cut snake.

I only went to the races in Sydney to bet on Perth. I would always get in free as the races were almost over in Sydney when Perth was getting under way. I'd stay until dark (for the last in Perth) and only the desperates were still there. Redbeard and Hair Bear (nicknames my mate gave them) were 2 notables. I gave Redbeard 100-1 a photo finish one day and he promptly put a gold coin in my hand. Unfortunately I had to give him his gold coin back and a grey nurse to go with it

there was quite a few characters back in the 70's Freddy The Fox, Big Ginger and Star, they could find a mug at Gingers two up and have 4 good things for them the next day at the races

Loved the old casino room, with the Bookies having a large entourage on their stands with them, especially Rod Evans, with everyone hanging off his, including a familiar face back in the day in ex East Freo player Keith Shorthill

Ginger Rocco's two up game was huge in the 60s through to the opening of the Casino.

Ginger was the biggest punter at the trots in those days and raced quite a few trained by Fred Kersley.

When he went to court for illegal gambling gave his occupation as a "Waiter".

My uncle and a very well known WAFL Football Club Doctor got busted one night at Il Travatore....the coppers rolled up with a bus and filled it up with punters and took them all to the Watchhouse for "processing". A lot jumped out windows and back doors when the bus rocked up but our two didn't act quickly enough. My old man got a phonecall about 3 in the morning to come and collect "Mr Smith" and "Mr Jones" and had to post bail of $30 bucks for each of them.....they forfeited their bail and the bail slip stated their occupations as "Book Keepers".

Club 27 had the best Toasted Ham & Cheese sangers in Perth at 2am in the morning and only cost you a $2 bet on a table win/lose or draw. One night we were denied entry, which we thought was strange, but heard the place was raided 30 minutes after our knockback. Next time there the doorman got a small tip.

As mentioned to me by my mates old man, on his first day of work got a phone call "Friday 9 pm" and hang up. Asked the old guido boss what does "friday 9pm" mean? The boss took him to the safe and showed him 2 envelopes "give this one to the top cop and with this one you go to the watchouse and bail everyone out". Fun times back then!!!
