When did the Diggers Cup become 1400m?

Is there a reason Ascot doesn't run on the Tuesday and have this race?

And the 3200m race. That is just embarrassing.

it used to be 1800m , bomber. Anzac Day at ascot used to be a ripper, huge crowd, bands etc.

again I think we are the only metro club not to have a meeting...its a pharqueing disgrace...it would attract a big crowd...guess its the hourly wage...

the 3200m "race"..joke!! WA for some strange reason wants to phase out distance races. winter at Belmont use to have a clutch of 2200-2400m races but no more. I wonder why?

Agree completely with your comment re the Anzac day meeting not being held at Ascot. Yet, they have a meeting there the next day.

With all due respect to Pinjarra, and I have attended race meetings there when in Perth on numerous occasions, any ceremony commemorating Anzac day, cannot help but have a far greater influence on those attending, if that ceremony was to be held prior to the first race or mid race day, at Ascot. If it was held mid race day you could have the Premier and dignitaries from our armed forces attending, and that would just add that little bit of extra emotion and meaning to the ceremony.

I have attended Anzac day races at Flemington particularly when my old man who fought in WW 2 for 5 years in defence of our Country was working there, and I can tell you that it tore at the heartstrings watching men who had served with my dad, sobbing uncontrollably at the playing of the last post.

Most of them, including my father have since departed, but playing that last post at Flemington still engenders a great deal of emotion. I am sure that it would have a similar effect at a ceremony conducted at the headquarters of Perth racing at Ascot.

If the powers that be want to, they could have a meeting at Ascot, and one at pinny for those who live out of town but would like to attend a memorial ceremony at Pinjarra.

After all, they had no problem programming the first ever race meeting in Australia, on Good Friday

Only Melbourne and Sydney have metro meetings on Anzac Day.

Queensland meeting is at Gatton and SA is Murray Bridge, so WA is not alone.

Agree 100% Bookie . My dad  trained his last city winner on Anzac day when they held the races at Ascot years ago the RSL welter I think the race was . The horse started at 50-1 as well, oh the memories. Anzac day has to be the most important day on the Australian calender I reckon. Here in Perth the crowds at the dawn service seem to be getting bigger each year as they should, it is because of the sacrifice all those serviceman and woman made in the name of freedom and protection of this great country that we have the privilege to attend a race meeting on this most sacred of days

Respect in the highest capacity is what all our soldiers deserve living&the dead on Anzac day....The diggers cup should be held at the premier track if it is available...Two-up  should
be allowed to be played at all raceclubs Australia wide with or without a meeting. With the governments permits  stating proceeds will be split with the relvent rsl club in the area and the raceclubs...

To acknowledge the freedom factor we enjoy due to these legendary men&women of our armed forces....
Bookie& spinking the most important day for me on Australian calender is Anzac day...

Great idea about a swy game and how the proceeds of such game should be cut up Savethegame. Wasn't there something about no one being allowed to play swy within a 100 km radius of the casino or some stupid rule . Every RSL club should be allowed to play on Anzac Day

Most probably deviated a little off track here . But if anyone can stand in the early morning light at Kings Park on Anzac day and not get a tear in the eye or a lump in the throat . when they recite the ode , last post and reveille then they are not human

They used to play it on Anzac day at Flemington, gents.

Nappy Ollington, who ran all the illegal two up games in Melbourne since WW2 or thereabouts, was brought in to run the games. haven't been to Flemington for about 15 years, so don't know if they are still playing it there. Nappy passed away a good 10 years ago.

As far as I'm concerned, the greatest thing about Anzac day as far as it has evolved over the last 20 years, are the numbers of young people here in Melbourne who now attend the dawn service and march.

The greens and other left wing outfits do all they can to denigrate those who fought, just so these very same lefties would have the freedom to denigrate their service by calling Anzac Day a glorification of war when it is nothing of the sort.

So it's great to see youngsters and teenagers not falling for the propaganda, and supporting those who march.

It is up to us to ensure that those who gave their lives are etched in our memories and those of future generations, forever.

If we don't treat Anzac Day with the full respect the day deserves, our ever growing population of migrants, and our home grown young people from the age of 5 till 35, will take this democracy of ours for granted, rather than understand that thousands of men and women sacrificed their lives, in order for us to to be able to enjoy a lifestyle of freedom and relative peace, that other Countries envy.

It didn't suit the Committee at the time who mostly stood Stallions that couldn't get a runner to go past 1600M. In fact they seemed to think WA was all about 2yo and quick returns, but this week's 2yo race is not exactly a field of great depth.

Hear hear Bookie . One of the most poignant of images over the last couple of years marches don't know if it was here or over east but was of a little girl no more than 5 years old walking out in front of a group of ww2 vets waging one of those little Aussie flags , and a old soldier bending down to accept it from her magical moment caught in time

You, and those who have "liked" your post, have obviously never read the Green Left Weekly and the articles that are written in it on Anzac day each year. If you did, you would be "ashamed" of your post.

The only "complete and utter ****' and "crap' as you so eloquently put it Carey, is that which is written in that lefty piece of garbage about the Anzac's and Anzac Day, and the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance and other monuments to our fallen heroes.

The only inbuilt prejudice that I have regarding Anzac Day, is my total admiration for those who fought for our Country and returned to do everything they could to make it the best Country in the world, and for those who fought and died so that we could live in a free, democratic society.

Anyone, be they from the left, centre, or right, who in any way, shape, or form, denigrates either our soldiers who fought and continue to fight for and on behalf of our Country, or who denigrate the institutions which have been built in order to honour the memory and sacrifice of those who paid the ultimate price, will be treated with the utmost contempt that I can muster.

If that is an additional "inbuilt prejudice", then it is one which I am very proud to possess.

Great two-up story told to me by the ring-keeper...The old days the police would make the odd raid.
This particular fella who had competed in a Stawell gift, was involved in raid but a  couple days prior his legs had been scalded by boiling water so he was bandaged from the ankles  to up under his shorts.
So a half dozen police   had crept  up  and   formed circle  100yards before the ring...with rest making a beeline for the game in progress, with a realization a raid was in progress and everyman for himself, the were going all angles but with big majority of the players 60&over it wasn't hard for each copper to finish up with one player in each hand in no time, but there was a few who made it  out to the second circle of police, fella with bandages charged through so two police got on his tail every policeman had two in hand except the boys who  chased the Stawell gift runner 15 mins later returned to the two-up empty handed, with  the sarge giving them a spray and please explain, with constable saying we had to give up when the bloke with the broken legs  keep getting further ahead.

well i have not ever read about them.
so what i just did was google 'green left weekly', found their site, and then searched 'anzac day'
and nowhere does it cast aspersions on those marchers that i could read.
the conflict yes, the Anzacs themselves no.
and they are NOT representative of most that would class themselves left anyway.

not to mention that YOU said....."greens and other left wing outfits"  ,in other words YOU generalised.
i am sure there are fruit loopy cons around too.
there is one that posts here fairly often!!!!

being proud of anzacs and their sacrifices, does NOT solely belong to the cons.
so yes, YOU should be ashamed of yourself.

    you sir are a ********.

Didn't see anyone saying  anything about the Ascot thread on state election weekend when the whole thing basically turned into a political thread, reckon Anzas day is whole lot more important than a state election . Who can excited about a 8 race programme that has 4 races x10 starters 3 races  x 9 starters and 1 x4 starters

    Greg Hooper’s Preview

    RACE 1

Just the four runners to face the starter. GET THE VIBE should find herself in front and dictating the speed she gets every chance for back to back wins. DANES MAREE the clear danger off an impressive first-up display.

    Numbers – 3 – 4 – 1 -5

Suggested Bet – GET THE VIBE WIN

    RACE 2

ELEGANT BLAST was well supported in betting at her most recent where she suffered a nasty fall in running. She’s trialled well since and with Pike jumping on looks the clear testing material. TONKATUFF was big winner two back before he was forced to race without cover and battled on solidly. Suspect he will be ridden much quieter from a wide gate and show a big turn of foot. KEY TO FAME finds it hard to win. He sits on the speed and keeps whacking away. FORSEEN leads and will appreciate the drop back to 1400m.

    Numbers – 9 – 6 – 1 – 5

Suggested Bet – ELEGANT BLAST AND TONKATUFF

    RACE 3

ROYAL MISSILE never really got warm first-up. She should improve off that run and really appreciate the rise to 1400m. She just needs room to move from an inside draw to be hard to hold out. DELANEY is very talented. The query is the rise from 1000m – 1400m. ONE SHORT impressed first-up at Albany. He can box seat and be dangerous. WRINKLY can carve over to lead and give a sight.

    Numbers – 3 – 7 – 2 – 1

Suggested Bet  – ROYAL MISSILE WIN

    RACE 4

MR MOTOWN has returned in good form this campaign. He should be able to tuck in behind a strong speed and go close. REMEMBER BERLIN drops from 1200m to 1000m which is a query however from gate 2 he can lead or box seat. DISTANT MEMORY with the class and distance drop. BELLS TOWER gives a sight on speed.

    Numbers –  1 – 4 – 3 – 7

Suggested Bet – MR MOTOWN AND REMEMBER BERLIN

    RACE 5

MINUS LOOKS is a fairly classy type when on song. The rise to a mile is a query however on paper this could become a sit and sprint affair in which could give him the advantage. BOLLYWOOD BLITZ was a dominant fresh winner before having his turn of footed blunted in a fast run race last week. Back in class and off a softer tempo he goes well.  PUSH TO PASS is always capable at this level and finds the strongly. CHECKERS should get a nice run on the speed.

    Suggested – 9 – 3 – 5 – 8

Suggested Bet –  MINUS LOOKS AND BOLLYWOOD BLITZ

    RACE 6

VARIATION is a class above these and he should be too strong. He showed last start his ability to tough it out on the speed and he looks likely to get the tow right behind the leader, CORPORATE LARRIKIN, and be able to see off the challengers. CORPORATE LARRIKIN is always dangerous when leading and controlling. The drop back to 1400m is ideal. RED ORA will love the drop in class. SETTLERS CREEK next best.

    Numbers –  6 – 4 – 1 – 5

    Suggested Bet – VARIATION WIN

    SuperPick - Race 6 No. 6 VARIATION - Profit Plus – 25% (Win)

    RACE 7

Take the top two out of this race and it is the type of field you’d expect to see at a provincial meeting. The 3200m makes it a bit trickier however impossible to tip against the class horses DARK ALERT and ZARANTZ. SUNSET SUPERMAN is a one batter who might be able grind away into the first-four. CHILL THE CHAMPERS could be the leader.

    Numbers – 2 – 1 – 8 – 3

Suggested Bet – DARK ALERT WIN

    RACE 8

Wide open sprint to finish the day. CONSEATED look almost not interested last start when she was unable to position up near the speed. Expect her to race much prominently and improve sharply. PROFIT STREET is capable of pulling out a big fresh run. MAJINIKA always has claims at this level. DAINTY TESS next best.

    Numbers –  7 – 2 – 1 – 3

    Suggested Bet – CONSEATED WIN.
