    UAE have done Australia a big favour, beating Saudi Arabia 2-1 last night. A win against Japan tomorrow night and Australia would qualify with a game to spare (as Japan and Saudi Arabia play each other in the final game).

    STANDINGS
    1 Japan 17 (+9) - to play AUS (H), SA (A)
    2 Saudi Arabia 16 (+6) - to play JPN (H)
    3 Australia 16 (+6) - to play JPN (A), THA (H)
    4 UAE 13 (-2) - to play IRQ (A)

    If we lose against Japan but win against thai do we still qualify? I havent sat down and done the maths on this yet

    Yep. Assuming Japan beat or draw with SA.

    However, if JPN do win tomorrow and qualify, there'd be little incentive for them to try too hard against SA. I wouldn't want to be relying on JPN to win or draw that game.

    If SA beats JPN, AUS would need to beat THA and also finish ahead of SA on GD. If SA and AUS finish equal on points & GD, SA would qualify ahead of AUS (based on H2H results).

    Hopefully, the Socceroos can at least get a point out of tomorrow's game and take this out of the equation.

    CORRECTION

    If equal on points and GD, SA would qualify ahead of AUS, due to more goals scored in this group stage (SA lead 16-14).

    If they finish with the same goals scored, the next tiebreaker is H2H results (AUS lead SA, with a 3-2 win here and a 2-2 draw there).

    TIE BREAKERS
    1 Points
    2 Goal difference
    3 Goals scored
    4 H2H record of tied teams
    5 GD in matches between tied teams
    6 Goals scored in matches between tied teams
    7 Away goals in matches between tied teams
    8 Fair play points (lose points for every yellow & red card)
    9 Drawing of lots by FIFA

    With Japan winning 2-0, the standings are:
    1 Japan 20 (+11)
    2 Saudi Arabia 16 (+6) 16 goals scored
    3 Australia 16 (+4) 14 goals scored

    The AUS v THA game will be played hours before the SA v JPN game.

    Scenarios for AUS to qualify on Tuesday:
    • If AUS win 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-1 or 3-2, need SA to draw or lose;
    • If AUS win 3-0, need SA to win 1-0, to draw or lose;
    • If AUS win 4-0, need SA to win 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 or 3-2, to draw or lose;
    • If AUS win 4-1, need SA to win 1-0 or 2-1, to draw or lose;
    • If AUS draw, need SA to lose.

    If AUS loses, will have to playoff with the 3rd place side in Group A, with the winner to playoff with the 4th place side in the CONCACAF confederation.

    Actually if AUS loses, they could still be eliminated on Tuesday night if UAE beat Iraq by enough goals to overtake AUS on GD (currently a six goal difference). Highly unlikely, but you never know.

    Piss poor performance. Biggest liabilities are Smith and Kruse. Did u know that since 2014 Brad Smith has played more games for the national team than he has for his respective clubs? Its a bloody farce!

    Im a big fan of Mark Bosnich. he talks farking sense 100% of the time. Ange is a dickhead for changing formation all those months ago to the back 3. The only country that plays a back 3 is italy. They pluck the Juve back 3 and play them in the team. Its the only way it works. You need to be drilled and know exactly what the two other defenders are thinking and doing. If not you play a flat back 4 like every other country. Its cost us direct route to WC

    Quite frankly - I'm pretty happy we didn't get straight through.
    Don't deserve a spot in Finals, and will get flogged if we do get there.
    So these additional matches, especially the ones v Honduras / Panama et al at least add a bit of interest, and hopefully some good matches to watch.

    There was only one scenario that could have resulted in USA getting eliminated and it happened. Needed Honduras to beat previously undefeated Mexico (Honduras won 3-2), Panama to beat 2nd-placed Costa Rica (Panama won 2-1) and USA to lose to bottom-placed Trinidad and Tobago (Trinidad and Tobago won 2-1).

    If you had asked me before to take a 0-0 draw into the sydney game i would have bitten your hand off. But it must be said, we should have been going in with a 2 goal lead. Opportunity missed in a big way

    Go Sweden! Probably the worst Italian team in my lifetime but knowing their luck they will still qualify. Northern Ireland were ripped off with that penalty but Switzerland appear the better team.
