I hear King Of Swing has bone chips and I wonder if that's why his sale was delayed a few weeks ago.

I also wonder what they've paid for all these 3 year olds. Any rumours going around?

  • KTQ, I havnt heard it was injury related more a funds thing.

I am hearing we are looking at well in advance of $300k for KOS. But they are not from inside the stable.

Ooof. Gotta win a few to win that back. And like I'm biased as all hell but they still gotta beat my boy Jack Mac ????????????

  • Yeah for sure, would have to nearly sweep your 3 and 4yo season to recoup that.

Money's an interesting concept, like the guy who sold Angel of Harlem. Once in a lifetime opportunity to get a horse that good and the owner admitted it but said the offer was too good to refuse. I personally would rather the thrill of a horse that good. After all, isn't that why we have horses?
  • It all depends on their business model as to whether you sell.
If its an offer too good to refuse there must be some point where money in the pocket is better than what I could potentially win.

Word around that it’s a very touchy subject.

  • If he does have soundness issues then that would mean the 3yo races are opening up.  If Jack Mac is as good as a couple people say he will go unbeaten until his 5yo season.
    Me I'm not too sure.

More NZ balance of payment relief headed this way at the expense of the Australian and more particularly the West Aussie breeding industry.
Short term confectioneering for stables that will no doubt have the media fawning as per usual with their superb performances if they stand up. Yawwwwnnnnnn.

think it is Aust wide - not just WA - re the NZ imports

I read an article on Pizzuto a few months back - he said the Borg family i think it was - who is basically his financial backer - gave him a $500000 war chest to go and buy NZ horses

Merv Butterworth has got some horses with Oliverri - but his no 1 trainer is Kerryn Manning - same formula - all high price Kiwi imports - i think their was one at Charlton on Sunday - 1st start in AUST - normal scenario - starts $1.04 and wins by 50 metres - you get a bit sick of it actually

Exactly what I was thinking.... Why would I bother going to the yearling sales this weekend, when these guys bring over ready made champions.

Had to do my research on that one:

Angel Of Harlem sold to Perth interests

    NZ HARNESS NEWS

Promising Canterbury three-year-old filly Angel Of Harlem has been sold in a big-money deal that will see her leave our shores.

Clients of Perth trainer Mike Reed have purchased the daughter of Mach Three from her West Melton breeder, owner and trainer Barry Ward.

Angel Of Harlem was placed in both the Harness Jewels and Australasian Breeders Crown as a two-year-old last season and won her second start back on a new campaign at Addington on December 7.

“She flies out tomorrow,” said Ward.

“I didn’t really want to sell her but, at the end of the day, she’s probably not going to beat Mark Purdon’s best ones or Nigel McGrath’s good one (Dizzy Miss Lizzy).

“You’ve got to be realistic – how many Group 1s is she going to win here? And the answer would have to be more than two to earn near to what I sold her for.”

Ward says Angel Of Harlem is definitely the best horse he has trained and he told Reed he felt she would go on to be better than Reed’s former good mare, Libertybelle Midfrew (A$640,497).

“She’s the best horse I’ve ever had but, at the end of the day, you’ve got to keep paying the bills.

“Funnily enough the bank manager called me yesterday for the first time in a while!”

All the more reason to go and buy a Westbred Betonme......at least you will race for bonus money that is not available to the imported horses and it rewards the breeders who are having a go here and the purchasers.
The quality of horse is the same as at any sale.....no promo dept exists for the huge amount of duds that go through the NZ sales to bring a bit of balance.
The myth of superior NZ horses based on geography is plainly ludicrous when you think about it.
They have a selling ethos in NZ ......purely because they have an unsustainable racing system for most to make a quid and a population that has no room for expansion of the punting dollar.

I will put it another way ....who would you rather have gone and watched....Dennis Lillee or Sir (cough cough ) Richard Hadlee ?
    I rest my case.

I looked up the sales results -  yesterday - re the Syd sale on Sunday at Warwick Farm

Michael Brennan bought a couple - 20 and 30k - only WA trainer to buy

Tim Butt paid 85k - i think that was equal highest

A sprinkling of trainers bought horse(s) Blake/Paul Fitzpatrick - Matt Craven - John Mc Carthy and a few others

Trainers dont splash out  much of their own money on them though - because they know how hard it is for them to make them earn

Just on buying horses from n.z. there would be yards you wouldn't dare buy from?...like all the success the butts have in aus, think that's one stable I would be gun shy. of.. .like they have said field marshall has had two throat operations  would be to many horses could run 1.46.9 after two throat opps.,don't follow the n.z. imports close enough as to what yards they come from but I think they sold report for duty as 6-or 7 year old to w.a  for 100k , his two wins was a combined total of 7-8 grand over here
theres probably heaps of good ones they have sold to aus. anyone no any of them.Told once don't
buy from beach trainers? to me you need to do a fair bit of research  those kiwis do love overs..

Without hijacking the thread at least the kiwis didn't pick a 41 year old  out of 30 million poms... sir colin cowdry to face lillee &thomo ...that was like watching fatcat.

    OnTheBridle,
Considering the first offer of $350k fell through because the money couldn't be put together so they end up paying $400k.  Should make for an interesting 12 months to 2 years ahead
