With just over a couple of weeks until the Derby I just wanted to get some opinions of potential runners and some high priced horse flesh going around.
I see that Team Bond have a couple of NZ 3yos starting in the next couple of days with some form behind The A Team.
Gary Hall has his high priced King of Swing in a race against time with a cold effecting his preparation.
Could the Reed Team start filly Our Angel of Harlem against the boys or do they stick to the Oaks?
Is Jack Mac back or is he still under a cloud. The rumor is he is 100% fine and the stable is smoking the pipe until the Derby

Any other ones to keep an eye out for?
+1 -1

The Reed pair of Golden State & Bechers Brook you would have to have in contention plus the likes of Cott Beach, Highroller Joe, Slick Artist, One Off Delight, Cimorene & Captured Delight running in the Country Derby today at Pinjarra and then those others who raced in the Prelude on Friday Night like Speed Man, Bettor Be Abeliever, Rock Me Over, Shadow Magic, Bright Diamond, Marquisard and a couple of others around the place.

    VK,
With all those that you have mentioned it seems to me to be a very very good running of the event this year.

Don’t forget Team Hall also have Benhope Rulz and Beachbabebeauty who we’re yet to see.
  • OnTheBridleOnTheBridle    38 posts
Benhope Rulz is nom’d for Friday along with Woodlea Ragnar for Team Brennan. The latter has had 1 start for 1 win in NZ.

Luckily I did finish up my summary with “and a couple of others around the place” then OTB.
Cimorene winning the Country Derby today at big odds plus the presence of these newcomers to gods own country is certainly going to make our handicapper earn his pay in having to select that final WA Derby field me thinks!

HAHA OTB, lets hope he can swim better.

    Lol what.
Who on earth did you hear those rumours off? Jack scraped his leg, it got fat and he lost a week or so of work. As a result he wasnt quite fit enough for the 2500m slaughter that would be the derby - Hall and Bond wouldn't have given him a break. No need to break him down for the sake of 1 race. Its disappointing hes not racing but what's one race on the way to bigger things?

I'd be more worried about King Of Swing. You don't have doubts about a horses fitness from a "cold" then go and trial in 1.55. Breakdown material waiting to happen

    Bigger things?
Whilst I am a fan of the horse no doubt but his prone to injury is of a concern
To reach the Heights you anticipate everything must go right.
Fingers crossed but I don't see it happening too soon.

Come on Katie who do you think your kidding.. And before you start worrying about KOS and their training efforts make sure your own back lawn is well maintained first

Sorry KTQ but something is not right here. We read all the nefarious reasons why Jack Mac did not go to Sydney for the Derby.

He is still arguably the best 2 and 3yo we have seen in WA in his crop and now he misses our Derby as well.

I am not convinced that his only issue is a scrape on the leg.

Re Jack Mac.....If the horse has any issue at all whose business is that other than whoever owns him and pays the bills in any case ?

Beg to disagree Curmudgeon. The horse in his short career has developed a big following and we need to promote our champions by keeping the public informed.

I don't think Village Kid would have had the same following if Bill Horn had not promoted him the way he did.

The horse is of the public’s interest. You create more rumours and talk if you stay silent. Which they did.

It even has its own facebook or twitter handle (not sure which one)

Greg Bond soon learned that promotion is a double edged sword in a one way street in this game.

When talking to the media all you have to do is tell the truth but that is obviously too hard for some.

Let everyone introduce a media ban, no promotion, keep the punters in the dark and watch our already diminishing turnover go to the other two codes.

We can always race for ribbons and then connections can truly run their own race.

Yeah yeah....and so say all of us.
That's fine until personal opinion is misrepresented as factual statement of intent with ulterior motive.

Sometimes you can't win....was asked several times on Tuesday "How will your horse go today?' The smartarse reply would have been "Don't know, he hasn't talked to me" but I answered honestly. "well hopefully he runs well but he is first up, hasn't had a trial, is big in conditiion, think he is way unders at $1.70, so I will watch with interest. Hopefully he runs a good race." An acceptable response to most but one respondent muttered "Anything for a price, eh?" Yeah, right, okay, moving right along.

I agree with Chariots . The more owners /trainers tip their horses the more it creates a better market for punters. The more spruiking the better..

I don’t think he means it as in tipping. If you overtip you are attached with being overconfident, especially if you get it wrong. I think it’s more to do with horses in the public eye, such as Jack Mac who remains undefeated in WA. He had 1 run back and disappeared and the question of his whereabouts was very much danced around.

I think trainers tipping - adds to the excitement and  the product

However there is only one trainer ive made  serious money ( i reckon 15 to 20k) by backing his tips - and that was Brian Mayfield - Smith back in his heyday in the mid 80s

When that guy came on the radio 2KY  on Saturday morning - honestly the kitchen  table - got up ended and the wheatbix and marmalade and toast went every where (and i couldnt careless) in my haste to get a piece of paper and  pen - and write down exactly what that bloke said

I will give you some factual examples because i havent forgotten  the horses names

Bounding Away - was a champion filly ( one of TJs) - it won the Golden SLipper - it then went into the Sires Produce ( 1400 at Randwick ) a raging odds on Fave . Mayfield Smith had Imperial Baron ( a very good colt ) - he gave it a pretty good rap - however he also  had a little filly - his exact words were - " i think she will fill a hole " - meaning it will run a place - i had $300 the place on it  - it ran a place allright - it paid upwards of $9  the place - however it didnt just run a place - it won by 4 and 3/4 lenghs ( it was a bog track ) and paid $67 the win

Another day - Late Show - a welter type horse - he said this thing is going like a bomb on the training track - 16 to 1 - bolted in

Going Concern - its my best of the day - won by panels - that guys tips were an absolute meal ticket

I Forget to say in previous post the name of that  Sires Produce Stakes winner - Diamond Shower

Ran 3rd in the Rosehill Guineas won by Ring Joe, Bounding Away 2nd. I was there and backed Ring Joe ridden by J.Marshall and trained by a harness man. .Great  driver had a stint in W.A

What i couldnt work out that year - mind you they were allowed to use Anabolic Steriods - where fillys thought they were colts

The big 3 races for 2 year olds run in successive weeks were the Golder Slipper then the Sires Produce - then the Champagne Stakes

Bounding Away blitzes them in the G/Slipper - 1200 metres

3s on in the Sires 1400 metres - it floundered in the going - i dont think it ran a place - got beaten 10 lengths

Following week TJ entered it in the Champagne Stakes - 1600 metres - another bog track - the press basically said to him - look your nearly cruel - it cant run 1400 - it doesnt like the heavy going - what hope has it got over a mile

In the Champagne - Dimond Shower was 7 to 2 fave or 2nd fave - Bounding Away was friendless - blew like the north wind - got out to about to 12 to 1  - and won by 5 and a half lengths - work that out

Between the derby and oaks prelude,  ex kiwis  our angel of harlem, Detroit rose, liberty rose,---- derby horses  bright diamonds  ,speed man   , king of swing,  better b believier ,    fizzing,     golden state    ,ocean ridge,  benhope rulz,  would the total cost of this lot be around 1.5million or closer to 2million...

Gee hope follow the stars stock can offer some resistance  along with other new sires  in the three year old classics in time for the sake of w.a breeding industry ....

Watch with interest will be a great training performance to turn king of swing around...  everything points to ocean ridge    his my tip.

High priced going along Kiwi horses to WA stables come from the top 10% of any NZ crop STG.
They contribute nothing to the broader local harness racing industry and stuff up the punting markets all too frequently on their stopover here before they go to Yonkers etc.
The NZ national balance of payments figure is the main beneficiary.....certainly its not the NZ horses that don't measure up early.....and there are plenty of them that mysteriously evaporate...it's a mercenary business model.
It is just buying races.....not rocket science although to listen to media etc it is pure genius to train these types of horses. I would ban them appearing in Australia until they turned 4.
The kiwi breeding myth has been exposed by one of their own....M Purdon...who has this weeks NZ Derby fav Sicario....an Australian bred horse....just like Follow The Stars ...Smolda.....Golden Goddess...Fly Like An Eagle are Oz breds. I am hoping like hell that the westbred Lady De La Renta kicks the colts to the footpath for Annie Belton tonight.....stuff the kiwi breds.
