The 2019 Karrakatta Plate from a Breeding standpoint

Today's edition of the two year old premium race in Perth, throws up an interesting snapshot of the current state of breeding here.

The field is split 50/50 with half bred locally and half from Interstate Stallions. Of those, two are Victorian and the remainder are from The Hunter Valley.

The WA bred runners account for 7 wins so far this season, none of them black type, for a total of $680,600 including some Platinum Westspeed payouts as well. Specialism and Miss West Coast are the only multiple winners and they were both Platinum Saturday wins.

The Interstate bred Beethoven and Jericho Missile are both multiple winners with both also being Listed black type winners (one each). In total, Interstate bred runners in today's race, have collected $834,865 with some of those ten race victories attracting the lesser Westspeed bonus.

Unfortunately, three maidens have also made this year's field, all being from WA Stallions.

Interstate bred two year olds won three of the four eligible black type races in the lead up to this year's Karrakatta Plate. Beethoven the Perth Stakes for his second win, Jericho Missile for the restricted Magic Millions win, Rio Del Mar for the Gr 2 Filly Gimcrack race (why it's Gr2 I don't know), however the other black type winner this season was Prim And Proper by Alfred Nobel, but she didn't accept for today.

So quality seems to definitely indicate that the Interstate bred two year olds are superior horses at this stage. They have won better races and accumulated more stakes money in the process, even overcoming being ineligible for the top tier of bonus reserved for WA Stallions produce. In terms of the five WA based Stallions that are represented in this year's race, Safeguard is currently the only commercial Stallion of them, averaging just over $67,000 at the most recent Perth Yearling Sale and as a result I feel he has the most to lose by a poor showing and the most to gain from a win. Winning black type is the next step for him as he at this stage has had great early results but been found wanting against the better quality Eastern States bred youngsters.  Snippetson who was just under $30,000 at the same sale, really could benefit enormously from a top three finish, as he is not known as a sire of two year olds, having produced only one two year old stakes winner from 11 crops racing with most of his stock performing at three and beyond. Patronize, whilst well regarded by most WA Trainers, just doesn't connect with the sales ring at $23,666 ave this year on a small draft offered, a win for him today would rejuvenate a career.

For the Interstate Stallions, winning today will give then something more in terms of global coverage for wider breeder appeal for the majority represented such as Magnus with 16 stakes winners, Nicconi 16SW, Smart Missile 8SW, Helmet 6SW all having produced at Gr 1 level, then Rubick and Deep Field, both first crop Stallions but already having produced black type winners. Moshe has 1SW and like Sizzling who is yet to produce a black type winner, both would benefit greatly from a win today in the Karrakatta Plate.

So there is a lot at stake for more than just the connections in today's race. I do think that quality will come to the fore today again.

Nice win for the Deep Field gelding, perhaps a surprise with the rise in class but great result for his Sire who no doubt will be even harder to buy in the next 12 months. Snippetson and Safeguard filled the minor positions, which when it is all said and done, is a reasonable result.
