Some of the special comments today - "it's important to get the ball out of the centre" ( in reference to 6-6-6 )...gosh thanks, didn't know that.

Also if they talk of the "Leigh Matthews Principle" of you can score a goal every minute one more time.....teams 6 goals behind with 6 mins to go and commentary trying to keep the game "alive" with the Leigh Matthews principle. Pulllllllease.

The coaches comments in the late sports Weekend Newspaper were possibly more mid - late 70's than 80's. Little captions they were. Just not sure who that coach was now, but at skool gave us kids a good laugh.

The Sunday Times always had the Coaches Comments section in their National Scoreboard page in the 1980s Riders.
Toddy was always good for a quip or a clip depending on our result!

Good turn out at Lathlain park last night to see the Demons win their 4th straight game to start the season.
The last time Perth achieved that feat was in 1978 which was also the last time they played in a GF (lost by 2 points to East Perth in torrential rain).

Lot of demon fans up and about VK. Good to see apart from them beating the black ducks last week. Wish I had of known (my fault for not looking close enough at the local comp) that game was on at Lathlain last night could have done with a afternoon evening in the pig pen at Lathlain.

Claremont v West Coast very interesting game this weekend - Tigers to win and stamp themselves as a big Premiership chance.

Claremont v West Coast very interesting game this weekend - Tigers to win and stamp themselves as a big Premiership chance.

It was interesting Riders but a different result to what most predicted with the WCE Reserves getting up...good to see the Black Ducks get our first win of the season against WP after 3 tight losses to start the year.

Spot on VK the Tigers kept West Coast goaless in the second quarter, kicked five themselves, very close at the end with only a kick in it.

As soon saw before the game Claremont were $1.30 thought well there gone! Ridiculous short price against a team of that talent. Also not forgetting it is Claremont.

Black Ducks were slight underdogs and got the job done.

    Bulldogs devoured the Sharks.

Not much between Subi - West Coast - Claremont, then 6 lengths back to Perth and South and that's it.

Peel capable on there day - good luck backing them. Terrible team to bet on - or against sometimes.

Cardinals - Black Ducks next best.

Two of the best and most traditional clubs East Fremantle and East Perth to fight out the wooden spoon - quite sad that two great clubs are way down the bottom.

Subi are still a fair way in front of everyone else Riders they have won 26 in a row or something similar, they have not lost a home and away game since Round 1 2017 (43 games ago) and since 2014 they wouldnt have lost any more than a dozen games in total.

Agree good to see the Swansea break the duck. Huge numbers above for Subi. What do you think team wise or administration wise that has them so far ahead of the rest

VK how good a footballer is Horsley at Subiaco - how he didn't succeed at AFL level is a mystery.

Had a good first season at Gold Coast but then back to $ubi. Would have snapped him up in a blink if was a Victorian AFL club.

Luck and opportunity goes along way.

In a nutshell Spink the ridiculous Subiaco Oval deal from the WAFC where they received a massive payout to leave the ground playing wise but somehow were still allowed to keep their bar trade from the old clubhouse and 500 seats which they on sold for 15 years for every event at Subi Oval that has put them so far in front of every other WAFL club financially that they have been able to recruit and retain some of the best mature age players outside of the AFL for that whole time and in turn weaken their opposition the other WAFL clubs by pinching some of their best players.

Riders I think Horsley did his knee and needed a reco while at the Gold Coast Suns and was then delisted which was probably yet another mistake by that franchise since they were set up by the AFL!

There's the unbeaten winning streaks of Black Caviar - Winx - Subiaco...the former two both retired with winning streaks intact.

No retirement looms for the Lions - they can't stay unbeaten forever ( can they?!! ).

When they get rolled I want to be in at the ground floor getting on!!

Danger game against the Black Ducks at Basso this week ?

Probably not - but perhaps ( maybe on a wet day ) Bulldogs at Freo or the improvers Perth at Lathlain, definetly Claremont are capable as is West Coast.

$ubi remain unbeaten in 2019 - some team will surprise and cause a boilover one week - it's a case of when.

Tigers did go very close last season - final margin under a kick.

Peel Thunder & West Coast poles apart, one team gelling and playing with interest and being a part of the comp.

The other just shows up, no problems with that, results not that important - good let them be.

A team with that many afl listed players losing by 11 goals, goodness gracious.

The SANFL ladder Port Adelaide 5th and Crows 3rd, no domination - that's why it should've happened in the WAFL many years ago.

People forget that when Eagles combined with East Perth it was domination - mainly because EP at the time also had many top WAFL footballers - blokes that weren't far off AFL themselves, then add the Eagles guys to that list and premierships were flowing like a river.

I would rather see both WCE & Fremantle Reserves in 9th & 10th place on the ladder respectively!
5th & 3rd is way too high for my liking.

Haha that's true, wouldn't we all, well Peel won't be in the finals.

The best thing in the WAFL was the reverse draft - whereby AFL listed players were allocated to the bottom clubs first.

Eg. clubs down the bottom like Perth would get first pick.

That was fair, equitable and a great idea - that's probably the main reason it didn't last.

Dockers and Eagles didn't like it - and they won.

What destroyed the fabric even more was when blokes like Hutchings a WP stalwart had to play for EP.

Another good example of Subi's recent success in the WAFL is having 9 representatives chosen in the initial WA State squad for the upcoming game vs SA at Optus Stadium before the Freo-Richmond clash in 2 weeks.

VK that was interesting reading in the "West" about George Hampson and the Sharks new coach - déjà vu alright with what happened at Subiaco.

Two sides to every story but surely as a reigning Fairest and Best winner at East Freo then that's where he should still with a compromise worked out. He also won two F & B's at Subiaco.

Swan District's quite happy to take him on and hope he does well.

He played a blinder on Saturday against the Garlic Munchers at Joondalup Riders with 31 disposals and 3 goals.

Jye Bolton from Claremont ( outstanding player ) looks a chance to be taken in the mid season AFL draft, I'd grab him no worries at all.

However doesn't it decimate the WAFL even more ? Then again if 5 or 6 blokes were taken from $ubiaco that might be a good thing!

Not sure how this AFL mid season draft works - but if Claremont lost Bolton that'll be a massive loss for them and will find it difficult to win the flag without him.

Noticed how well Hampson played, a three time Fairest & Best winner - twice in a strong team and once in a bottom placed team - now doing well in a middle of the road team.

Think reading between the lines he was popular with his Shark teammates - through his job ( that's his career and life for along time to come ) finds it difficult to attend all training sessions - to me if a teammate - so what! I'll see you Saturday George!

Bit of a difference too VK between Subi and EF - the Lions had another "50" guys in depth - the Sharks really couldn't afford to give away a such a good player.

The Sharks haven't struck a blow since they sacked Steve Malaxos who wins and losses wise did quite well with them.

If they didn't kick 7.28 or something like that in the 2014 Prelim Final against Subiaco, they would probably have beaten EP a week later in the GF in atrocious conditions - the same way Subi did.

Malaxos did a lot better at Old Easts that many gave him credit for. Put it this way - since he was booted - they've been deplorable.

A disappointing result on the weekend with the SAFL (with superb kicking at goal) 16.4 defeating the WAFL 13.15 and thus ending our 6 year unbeaten streak in the 2nd Tier Football competitions across the country.
But as the old saying goes- Poor kicking is poor football!

Pity the "2nd Tier Football" competition wasn't treated with a little more respect...I understand the gates were not opened until approx 5 minutes before the start of the game. Odds are the 200 odd WAFC staff  had no trouble getting in.

You understood correctly JJ, the gates opened at 11.55am for the 12.00pm start.

Is that so ? What a disgrace.
As my old man use to say...they wouldn't know s/?!t from clay!

Thank goodness the Perth Demons have breathed some life into the competition. The WAFL should be very proud of the fact that East Perth - ( West Coast ) Peel Thunder ( Dockers ) $ubiaco have dominated the Premierships.

They continue to make a mockery of it. Also some of the jargon the WAFC use today - are they serious?!!

Back to the WAFL game's - my premiership tip Claremont have had two tests so far this season - started favourites against West Coast and Perth and lost both.

Looks like I've fallen for the three card trick because that's typical Claremont. They should've done much better last season and only early days so far but under achieving in the big games again.

South Fremantle to knock over Subi this week and become a genuine Premiership threat!
Think have underestimated the Bulldogs. Still have some experience and the youngsters look ok too, always have good footballers coming through South.

If there ever going to get close to the Lions then this weekend at the Port might be it.

A big in for SF this week too Riders with M.Pickett back from injury, he is imho the most talented player in the WAFL as I thought T.Kelly was and we have seen how good he is absolutely starring at Geelong, whilst some "experts" in the press continually pump up the tyres of Bolton & co!  8-|

Bulldogs flying great coaching effort from Todd Curley 5 retirements and knocking off premiership favourites Subiaco they are looking shaky now.
Enjoying the WAFL this year Perth have breathed some life into it  West Perth always trouble them and got them again and the West Coast ressies have added something to the comp better with 10 teams I think,
