After the Waroa Awards last night, with it being the last night, is there hoing yo he anything else simular,I think it's great,to have something like this as when do all Trainers, jockeys, and owners get a chance to relax.
I am told that due to high costs of putting on the show, an ever decreasing amount of ticket sales, the decline into oblivion of the Owners magazine, that this year's event was the last. The chances of RWWA hosting on such a scale are just about nil, as they may struggle to have sufficient budget next year having already declined an opportunity to host a National Hall of Fame function, I am told.
At best there may be a smaller scaled version with all three codes at smaller or Industry owned venue. It's worth remembering that Perth Racing could not afford to host their own night around six years ago, so they piggy backed off the involvement of Harvey Crossman, handing out their awards on the same evening as the Owners Association.
The real losers of course will be the Red Kite Charity which has been the beneficiary of part monies raised on the evening.
As a WAROA member for the past 10 years or so I would like to see a couple of changes. To be honest, I'm happy to pay my $88 per year and get free entry out of it. The free entry extends to the "big" days as well.
Maybe a WAROA area at the races for members. Doesn't have to be big, similar to the "pr.com" lounge at Belmont in years gone by. The awards night is a great idea but it shouldn't be in the hands of WAROA to host a state awards night? More WAROA luncheons I think are a good idea, doesn't have to be in the top of the ivory tower either.
I think the bonus scheme is flawed and needs a review. Just my 2c
Not that you can read it anywhere else, because nobody wants to talk about it, but the award for 2YO of the year went to a horse that couldn't win anything until it ran in an incredibly weak Sires Produce. The Karrakatta Plate winner at least won a maiden, then ran fourth in a Listed race before winning the feature race of the 2yo season. Tinsnip, the winner of the award, couldn't run past it and won probably one of the weakest group races held in the nation last season. I'm sure he is a lovely horse owned by lovely people, but why ?
Maybe Tinsnip got 2yo of the year because he was the best 2yo? In the 2yo Grand Final, it wasn't his fault he drew barrier 16 and sat 4 deep the trip and was beaten a neck.
Had no idea that gatting was nominated for horse of the year..... only found out once i looked on the owners forum.
As for waroa membership i think im going to pull up stumps. I only go when i have horses racing so its free anyway and unless it gives entry on the big days its not really usable for me
How about Journalist of the year. Someone with skin in the game, said that the guy wrote one article, on a subject that had been widely known for three weeks and he never goes to the races. Nice old slap in the face for those that work directly in the Industry week in week out.
These sort of decisions make a mockery of the process.

WAROA membership really only has a value in the card for free entry, so if they are doing that for all of Belmont, what is the value ? As an organisation, they are toothless. Never been anything more than party planners. The fees and overheads in running the organisation need closer scrutiny, which is in itself a joke of an idea as nothing in WA has ever been subject to that when it came to Thoroughbred Racing or the organisations that ran it.
The mere idea of giving Owners a voice is laughable, as anyone who knows Perth, it's been a case of who you know rather than what you know for decades.
There is an inference on here that there is some sort of voting on the horse awards... I was a WAROA member for 5 or 6 years, and never got to vote on horses of the year??? So who votes on the awards?
