Told this one before - but good to repeat - nothing was as funny as seeing a very healthy sized ( in horse terms definetly in need of the run ) Mal Brown playing coach of at the time a very ordinary Claremont team.

What stood out were a couple of things - Claremont getting thrashed at Claremont Oval and in front of the members area Browny trying to ignite his teammates, taking all and sundry on with playing number 100 on his back!

Us kids could not believe seeing number 100 and the number stretched all the way around him!
Had to have been done with a sense of humour, and showed whilst the bloke could be dead serious had that mischievous side.
Nobody surely has worn number 100 before or since?!

He was a Sandover Medalist with great knowledge and by all reports an outstanding WAFL player at his top.

No doubt he would speak highly of Polly Farmer. They would've linked up and been both teammates and rivals would say.

It's such along time ago but think their might have been a little controversy at the time of Barry Cable replacing Polly Farmer at the end of 1977.

Farmer had taken EP into the finals three years in a row, Cable did the rest though - win 78.
Not sure if Polly retired from the coaches job or forced, am slightly favouring the latter.

1975 West Perth finished on top and won the flag...EP lost to SF in the first semi and not WP.

VK would that have been Polly's first year as coach in his final stint of coaching at EP ?

    I'm leaning to 75,76 and 77.
Finalists all three years and runners up 76. It's the 75 season not 100% sure about, but pretty sure had them three years 1975, 76 and 77.

That would've been his final block of coaching. Then Cable took over...a champion replacing a champion...when looking back an indication of how strong and powerful the WAFL once was.

Polly coached EP in 1976-77 Riders after coaching Geelong from 1973-75 and WP as Captain/Coach 1968-1971.
Ray Giblett was coach of EP in 1974 & 75.

Thanks VK, so just the two years, for a fourth and runners up.
Ray Giblett just the two years too and Barry Cable 78,79 and think 1980 not sure 81 and then he took over from Malcolm Blight as coach of North Melbourne in 1982.

Grant Dorrington must have taken over in about 82 until Greg Brehaut in 1984 and then the final coach before the Eagles cane in would've been Gerard McNeil.

The guy who I thought was great was the fellow at West Perth - Graham Campbell, he seemed to suit them and took the Cardinals to a premiership.

    Thanks again VK.
Time never stands still and now winners to be found!

Going for two line bet's this week - both with the headstart....
Perth v East Fremantle - going to take the Sharks +14.5 @$1.88.
$ubi v West Perth - on the Falcons at +36.5 headstart.

    Other games:
East Perth v West Coast - The West Coasters should win at $1.43 but Royals keep hanging in there.
Swans v Peel - tough one. Good luck.
South v Claremont - both can be hold and cold, and if one of them is going to step up and challenge the Lions - it's time!

Just another quick note Riders Barry Cable took over as Coach of North Melbourne mid season in 1981 when Captain/Coach Malcolm Blight resigned.

    So Ron Alexander ( 85, and 86 ?) & Malcolm Blight ( 1981 ) the final playing coaches in WAFL/AFL (VFL )
    East Fremantle and North Melbourne.

Their was a guy "Bluey" Hampshire think was playing coach of Footscray ( Western Bulldogs ) early 80s...and was Alex Jesaulenko a playing coach at Carlton ?

Not too many worked out in later years...so full credit to Barry Cable ( EP ) and Ron Alexander ( EF ) for getting premierships because even back around then - 90% of coaches were non playing and it was more the exception than the rule.

Brian Doogue in the 70s at Subi, think Swans had one too, but by the early 80s it was beginning to fade, Alexander was remarkable coaching effort - but he did have a bloody good team too.

Have a suspicion - not 100% sure but Cable may have been playing coach of EP but not Captain! Am sure that was the case with one of the playing coaches.

The last Captain/Coaches or playing coaches for each club in the WAFL were-

Claremont- Darrell Panizza (1995), Gerard Neesham (1987-89), Graham Moss (1977-83, 1 game in 85)
    East Perth- Barry Cable (1978-79)
    East Fremantle- Ron Alexander (1982-85)
Perth- Rob Wiley (1988), Barry Cable (1972-73)
    South Fremantle- Hassa Mann (1969-71)
Subiaco- Brian Douge (1977-78), David Parkin (1975), Ross Smith (1973-74)
Swan Districts- Stewart Magee (1976), Bill Walker (1969-71)
West Perth- Peter Steward (1972), Graham Farmer (1968-71)
    Peel- Peter German (2002)

As far as the VFL goes those that spring to mind were Malcolm Blight (NM-1981), Alex Jesaulenko (StK- 1980-81) & Carl-1978-79), Carl Ditterich (Melb- 1979-80) were the last of them in the last 40 years.
Hampshire retired as a player when appointed Coach on Royce Hart finishing up in 1982.

Here is another one for you gents. I was having a beer with some mates last night and was telling them about the discussion on here about the black&whites in the eighties.  And some of the names mentioned . They told me K.Caton Peter Ware come down from Darwin via wherever it was and a third bloke came with them. Gold star who gets it first its not that hard really, if I said who he played for will give it away

Kevin Caton & Joe Ahmat played in a Premiership in their first year at SD Spink in 1984, unfortunately Peter Ware was injured in the 2nd Semi Final that year and missed the GF but he did play in our 1983 flag.

Ok VK what's the story and record on this one! Must have been atrocious conditions although with the way footy is played these days ( Essendon were under the roof when only one goal until late in the game ) West Coast kept East Perth to just 0.1 to three quarter time.

    East Perth 0.0 half time
    0.1 three quarter.
    1.5 finish.

West Coast finished on 4.11 in a slog of a game.

Leederville Oval is a renowned Lake these days whenever we get a decent downpour Riders and looks like it was an expanded Lake Monger last night.

East Perth's eighth lowest score all-time and their lowest score since they were held goalless (0.9) by West Perth at Arena Joondalup back in Round 20, 2003.

Good work Paul wonder how many WAFL teams been scoreless at half time.

On today's games blimey no money for East Freo or West Perth at the line...an hour before bouncedown both drifters, at least a few more points to play with.

    Sharks from +14.5 to +18.5
    Cardies out to +38.5 from + 36.5

Good work Paul wonder how many WAFL teams been scoreless at half time.

It has happened 13 times. The previous time was by Peel Thunder v Subiaco at Subiaco Oval in Round 11, 1999.

That doesn't include the game in Round 1, 2004 when Peel Thunder had their entire score annulled for fielding a player that didn't have clearance to play.

Subiaco are the only club to be held scoreless for a full game, losing by 95 points to South Fremantle at North Fremantle Oval in Round 14, 1906.

$ubiaco up by 44 points at half time - you're right VK...how in the hades can they lose the GF ? Would need everything to go wrong for them and perfectly for South or Claremont - the only two possible teams that will play them on GF day. Unless West Coast comes from the clouds.

Perth Demons a couple of goals behind the Sharks at half time, them and West Perth just making up the numbers.

All games completed - $ubi romp away from West Perth - no wonder Subi backed at the minus line there, they crunched it.

Perth turned it around in the second half to win by 13 points and the Sharks line backers cheer at that result.

Black Ducks underdogs against Peel turn up trumps again, winning narrowly. Bet on Peel Thunder games and win, you've done very well.

South Fremantle put the sword to the Tigers and give them a shellacking.

Favourite Quinella for GF - Subi v South Fremantle. Claremont continually dissapoint when the chips are down in the big games - loss to WP last week too.

Mate they have bought the best available players outside the afl for 20 odd years that is why they have close to a 80% winning record in that time whilst all the other wafl clubs have battled to stay afloat and the wafc has sat on its hands and done nothing to stop it!

The black ducks finally get a win in a low scoring affair. East goalless for a half not seen to often at WAFL level. VK excuse my ignorance here but is there any salary cap rules in the WAFL
  • JayJayJayJay    7,628 posts
There is....but they are about as effective as an ashtray on a harley....those with money cheat.....those with lots of money cheat a lot. Points system was supposed to even up the playing field but that assumes no back door sleight of hand payments which of course, would never ever be even contemplated by any club, anywhere  in Australia. Perish the thought.
  • VillageKidVillageKid    2,275 posts
There is Spink (approx $275k per club) but as JJ has posted it is easily manipulated by certain clubs with money.
Also with the points cap system $ubi were also manipulating that on a weekly basis with their plethora of 10 point players on their list by 1 of them having general soreness or managed a week to allow them to drop him off and bring him back the next and do the same with another 10 point player all above board of course to the wafc!

Just looking at the ladder and final round of fixtures this weekend...positions 4th and 5th up for grabs with West Perth, Perth, and West Coast vying for those two spots.

A loss for West Perth or Perth could mean curtains for the season for one of them, providing the Eagles reserves can knock off East Fremantle at Shark Park.

If the Eagles win and either Perth or West Perth lose, they will pinch a place in the finals.

If Eagles lose then dosent matter if WP and Demons lose they will both stay in.

    The final fixture for them:
    WP v South
    Peel v Perth
    East Freo v Eagles
  • VillageKidVillageKid    2,275 posts
The WCE Reserves are playing EF at Lathlain Park Riders, they bought the home game off them and its now on Sunday so the Eagles will know their fate before bouncedown!

Goodness gracious, games all over the place - I see the Western Bulldogs v Adelaide Crows is in Ballarat.

Perth and West Coast will be favourite's to beat Peel and East Fremantle respectively and West Perth ( currently 4th ) underdogs to knock off South, so on that scenario - ( favourite's winning ) then the Falcons will drop out of the final five.

By the same token Perth and West Coast whilst both should be winning - no good things. Also Falcons at Joondalup with everything on the line could cause an upset.

Out of the three games got a hunch either WP or Perth will lose which means Eagles only have to knock over the Sharks and there in.

The more look at it...one thing is almost certain...if WP or Perth lose, then you can bet London to a brick..with that scenario West Coast Magoo's will be winning over the Sharks at Lathlain on Sunday.

Hopefully though the Sharks will show endeavour and make it tough for them.
