From Touchstone's facebook page:

"Exciting news today with Touchstone Farm being sold after receiving an offer last week.It has been an interesting 12-13 years with quite a few ups and downs but as with many of the journeys in life it all adds to the fabric that is our life.We sell with no regrets and when the new owner announces the purpose of the farm it will be very exciting and an important step forward for the racing industry. We made some good friends and bred quite a few good horses and most importantly stuck firm to the values that we live and operate by in other parts of our life.I think we are all looking forward to a bit more free time so roll on 2020.Thanks to everyone that has supported us over the years. There are way too many to thank"

RWWA would be the new owner by the sounds for their retired racehorse program. Just not sure how that will all work, but at least Touchstone have sold their property after many years trying.

What the ****???? I have known the owners for many years...Are you sure this answer is correct? Or do you mean that they dont have a water license for enough water for what they wanted to do!?!?!?!

An we reckon the media are deadset flogs, with their negative 5hit and bad reporting!!!!

The property does not have a full water license, they could have purchased the water license from Dick Lovegroves turf farm, years ago, it was offered to them , they declined,

I offered to sell a car once for about $70k..NO one bought it for a damn good reason.

The property has a water license..Is there a difference from a Full License and a license? The quantity may be different, but it is a license... So the fact your quoting is?????

This is a good thing for the hard working family that owned TS. It sounds like it has has potential to be a good thing for the new purchasers. Who gives a **** if it has a big water license or a little one?? It'd appear that it'd be good enough for the new purchasers or they probably wouldn't have bought the property!!!!

40HA property with a 14HA water licence, so it's something for a new owner to work around. The infrastructure was very good. I looked at the listing as I do all farms within 150KM of the Perth CBD that come onto the market, not because I want an equine operation, but for another purpose. Like many other listings, it was overpriced in the current marketplace, but it's a nice result for David and the family.

Point that I’m referring to is if you buy a property for a substantial amount,,one would hope that you had alll the resources available ie water ,, to be able to grow fodder and have water to keep stock on all the property ,, to maximise the full potential to make it a viable propersition,,, end of quite)

Nice point, but you said it was a fact...that's not a fact thats an opinion...Which you are fully allowed to have and i strongly encourage people to have. Just don't sell your opinion as fact,.

My opinion - and potentially that of the buyer - is that the water license they have (WTF is a full license!!!!) is sufficient for what they want to do. Otherwise they wouldn't have bought it.

Peoples opinions that are presented as facts in the old day generated a bloody nose, sore knuckles and potentially once medical attention is seen as not required a mate for life. These days its the basis for the masses to jump on the band wagon and spread the **** as if it is  fact.

Some things never change and that is that people like to state things on PTT as fact when in fact they are wrong.I wish I had time to be so immersed in the affairs of someone else.
If I did it is highly unlikely I would be commenting or disputing something of which I have no knowledge.

We are very happy to have sold our farm particularly in a tough climate and if the dozens of phone calls and messages are anything to go by then the vast majority of people are happy for us .Not that it really matters but here are some facts so no one needs to worry too much.

1)I have known Dick Lovegrove for many years (30 plus) never did he offer to sell me water for TF.He was keen for 20 years for me to buy his turf farm which clearly I did not.

2)I spent two years trying to obtain a water licence and eventually was able to purchase a licence for around 30 acres so the new purchaser has this.It is enough water for 30 acres as this is the amount of water we wished to have.Could have had more but we did not need or want more.
You always have the right to draw water for the animals. No animal goes thirsty

3)The property has always produced excellent hay when we decided to grow our own.It didn't need a water licence to do this just a bit of Mother Nature doing her normal thing

4)When the purchaser decides to announce their plans and purchase of our farm (in their time frame) it will be a significant day for the racing industry as it is the start of a serious effort to address animal welfare concerns.Perhaps the leadership shown to head down this path is the story here and not anything else.

Quite a few people on PTT have supported us over many years and we are very thankful for that and we have had wonderful support from many in the industry.

To avoid any confusion people know who I am and if any of these things are really worrying you that much get hold of my phone number and give me a call.
I am sure that Rio or Damien would have no worries making contact if they felt the need.

Once again thanks to all the well wishers and if some are not happy about the sale for whatever reason then so be it.

presumably the government then? so... if the government has purchased the land (directly or via RWWA).. you'd expect they would be able to sort out any addition to the water license that they required? All speculation of course.  :D

BTW... was on the rumour file this morning on 6PR.

Perfect location, right on the main road for all to see that they are doing something. Stick up a really big billboard.

They may wish to rename the facility after an influential committee member or past chairman of Perth Racing to really seal the deal.

The adjoining property is also for sale and as a retirement home goes, 231HA for $4.2M. Obviously must have some Oil leases on that land.............

lets have a think about this...firstly that abhorrent ABC report of cruelty at a Qld. abattoir..it really was confronting viewing. this resulted in the great unwashed rent a rabble crowd going spare.
this resulted in RWWA/PR going on the back foot, changing race times because of the weather, transferring meeting from northam to ascot, different parading arrangements, mists etc etc.
this culminated in purchasing touchstone park as a retirement home for race horses...note "race horses" no mention of pacers, dressage, show horses or indeed any other horse.
OK they have the centre, now they have to run it. how many horses can it comfortably accommodate? bear in mind, a happy retired horse can live to 18-20 years, sometimes longer. now consider how many horses are retired each year, how many do not have private homes to go to?
the farm could become congested within a few years. also consider a) supplementary feed, horses do not exist on grazing only. b) there has to be staff, who pays for them? c) who pays for the vet fees? c) shire, water, insurance, transport fees etc will not be cheap, who pays for them?
    d) there would have to be vehicles, who pays for them?
this is just scratching the surface of the outgoings.
all this has come about because of the exposure of a rogue abattoir in Qld. there are scores of abattoirs in Aust. all doing humane disposal of the animals.
also realize that "knackeries" have been around for over 1000 years and probably longer when almost every part of the horse was used.
i'll probably get hounded down and rent a rabble will picket my house but its just my opinion...100% knee-jerk on the part of RWWA/PR. who have not thought the whole matter through.

Agree that this will be a costly for the gov/industry to fund but could also be beneficial in some ways. Surely they could tie it in with Ag school/tafe and use it as an equine training/vet training centre??
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
great idea... I also think that at some point RWWA will just deduct 1% from prizemoney to fund it.
Cant see an issue with that myself... the winners pay for it (they are the ones that can afford it).

Are polo, equestrian, police, army, endurance, camp draft, rodeo, station horses going to be tracked for life by their various “Clubs” - or donkeys, camels, hippos etc (also large animals) ????
