After reading the article in the West the other day on Chris Parnham, after he wasted to ride in Railway, and now he is having to take a break,i dont know everyone elses oppinion, isnt it time they looked at these mininums, iinstead of our jockeys having to put there health on the line,,here we have a top line jockey having to take a break.

We need to start importing jockeys otherwise the same argument will get raised every few years.
Our kids are undergoing massive hormonal changes which are seeing bigger kids. Poor diets and lack of a work ethic will see the demise of the Aussie kids who wish yo undertake apprenticeships.
Of course we will get young females taking part but if we want males start looking at Asian centres..

What about animal welfare? Why should horses have to carry more weight to accommodate heavyweight riders? Maybe riders need to have a safe riding weight established that they are not permitted to ride under. That way, instead of wasting to ride, they will forgo the ride and a natural lightweight will be booked.

Pretty well what happens now.. It is a choice to get the weight down. An for animal welfare - remember the humans are the smart ones - there really should be a maximum weight. And the handicapper has to work down from that...

Agree about the need to focus on natural light weight male jockeys like we do for the females. Safest option for everyone.

Just looking at our riding list 12 jocks in there 40's big gap when they retire definitely think we need to have a influx of smaller Asian riders to fill the gaps or there wont b 2 metting run on one day.....anyone know what's happened to L Newman ??not on injured list

lee has taken a short contract in abu dahbi.
you are correct the following will retire within a short period of each other..hall, Harvey, turner, O'Donnell, whiting, knuckey, staples and maybe a few more.
our apprentice ranks are very skinny compared to Melbourne how has a very promising batch of coming through the ranks.
we should be doing the best we can to retain young grace and graham, subsidise their rent, lease them a car for a year, pay airfares for an annual visit home etc etc

There will always be senior riders who see an opportunity to get more rides in WA and move to Perth. Just like Tourneur left for more opportunity. If there is a void, it will be fillled

Possibly the same reason Barend Vorster is now based in SA (south Australia and not South Africa)

W.A. riding ranks probably lot easier now -----David Walsh , Dwayne Dunn, struggled even the babe Brent Thompson no more carnivals for me how  tight they ride in the west.  not coming back  sure after he rode a good two year-old  for CS Hayes. may have even won

stg, the other guy that wasn't too impressed was the trainer of Puckle Harbour think it was called - runner up to Rocket Racer in the Perth Cup - from memory trained by astute Victorian Colin Alderson - he said he'd never venture back to Perth again!

Was fair dinkum fuming and wild. Not sure if he has ever come back or not though.

Had a very good and underrated stayer Sea Legend - ran a terrific third in a Melbourne Cup, looked to have a great future, but that was it, broke down and think never ran again.

A boat saw the other day was named the "Sea Legend" and of course had to say to the owner - did you know a horse called Sea Legend ran third in a Melbourne Cup!?

Not surprisingly he didn't, but was quite interested in that haha.

I don't blame him...it was the worst episode of perth racing.
I heard wayne hokai left WA "at the insistence of a pistol wielding person who shall remain unnamed"

Colin Alderson's best was Sky Heights. What a tough horse to get past he was. 4 G1's and $4m in prizemoney. He was a ripper :x

Was the 1986 Melbourne Cup that the Colin Alderson trained Sea Legend ran third to At Talaq and Rising Fear, think the famous cartoonist Larry Pickering trained the runner up Sydneysider Rising Fear.

At Talaq 10/1 Rising Fear 50/1 Sea Legend 20/1.

Could've been same owners they had similar type names - Puckle Harbour, Sea Legend, Sky Heights - he could train a stayer alright.

He'd be about 75 now Colin Alderson and think been retired a few years, was awarded an Order Of Australia medal, a great honour and justice prevailed in the long run.

Inaflurry and Nicholas John another two prolific winners he trained. Nicholas John a very good stayer too.

His comments at the time on the Rocket Racer saga - scathing.

In about 2006 was going to bring a highly promising horse by the name of Cargo Cult here for the carnival, but don't think arrived it was about the closest he got.

From memory it was still burning with him but said its been over 20 years and their all gone or moved on, but think Cargo Cult got a few leg problems and didn't make it here.
