Its great that there is a race ( and i know it has been going for a few years )  recognising/remembering  Ray Duffy

Some trainers and drivers you rate - and some  you dont - but his horses found the line .

Not many runners but I thought there were plenty of betting opportunities

R2: I’m a Baby Face Adda fan but it’s priced like it will get a soft lead, currently way unders. I’m backing 3 runners. No3 Triroyale Brigade is a chance of crossing and is still I winning chance sitting close in the moving line. No5 Bettor Be Oscar is a massive chance of finding the top and again can still win from the breeze and No8 Extradite could cross and is at big odds with the stable saying they didn’t feel they could get there easy.

R3: I thought Tiffany Rose would cross comfortably, a view not shared by others. Great prices early on her.

R4: The local agency is offering a great price on Braken Sky a place, happy to play here.

R5: Have seen $1.80 That’s Perfect, he should dominate this regardless of what others want to do.

R6: No1 Fifty Five Reborn is a rare on the actually probably represents some value being drawn one, might not be the easiest of watches but she will be winning.

R7: Divinia Bellezza is flying. I only want to be on her straight out as they seem reluctant to put her in to it too early but definitely has the talent to beat these and is a fantastic price.

Ray was a very good trainer/reinsman Marko, from my memory he never had a big team but they were all pretty nice types during the 80s, 90s & early 2000s-

10th running of the Ray Duffy Memorial tonight......first winner in 2012 was appropriately Sneakyn Down Under.....followed by Russley Rascal, Sensational Gabby, Pacific Warrior, Shardons Rocket, Flaming Flutter, My Hard Copy, Vultan Tin and last year Talktomeurmattjesty.

Good night at Penrith for HWOE exports last night with Get Ready To Rock and Happy As saluting and Nitro Lad 2nd and Nightwatch Star 3rd. I well remember being told that one of the aims of HWOE was to keep horses racing in WA, sustain the local population, provide racing opportunities for horses who have reached their mark, lost form etc etc. Well, it has certainly succeeded in doing that......it is just in another state. Will the architects of this disastrous nonsense ever be held to account? Or will non stick bandaids keep getting applied until the roman fiddler runs out of strings?

Busselton Cup race of the night.
8 horse field with 6 winning chances.
Tiz A New Day I reckon this horse is flying.
Won his last two, on both occasions last qtrs in 28 and a bit.
No expert on Busselton but I don’t think you see that too often.

    Good stirring.

7 mobile races in a leader dominated sport and only 1 race that the lead was actually competed for with another one where a few drivers looked to find a forward spot.

Leads to thrilling edge of your seat racing.

What a lorry load of Codswallop - re the Bussleton Cup - i didnt have a bet - but obviously i was hoping Jay Jays would be victorious - apart from the Cup and trophies - 9k to the winner is  a very respectable amount of money up for grabs

Now i watched the race live on my computer re courtesy of TAB.Com - now they had the split screen up - with GP 5-6 minutes  away

Now Bussleton clicked 90 seconds late  ( over the official  start time )   of what i call stupid time - unless something was getting a gear change - they just kept spinning them around and around and around - and up until that point ( 90 seconds late ) the no 2 horse hadnt played up - then it got stirred  up ( probably got giddy ) and then got ordered to the outside of the front row - so the no 3 horse ( winner and main danger to fave gets into position 2  that turned out to be a huge help because it got in behind the leader - and the original no 2 horse ( which was no danger ) got caught in the breeze

See standing starts - there doesnt appear to be any uniform system - Aust wide - Globe Derby have got their silly blooody system - its like playing musical chairs

If i had been starting that Bussleton  Cup race tonight - i would have been looking at my watch like a hawk - and when it got within 3 seconds of the advertised start time- i would have said - bring them forward - Stand Them Up  . You allow horses to be continually spun around and around  and around - well there is a very good chance ( especially with a big crowd so close ) of one of the horses getting stirred up and fractious

They did the same at GP Marko re walking around in circles too long ,,for first four races.
Then I realised they were actually racing.

Well, he tried hard did little "Mike".....a bit of a quandary tactics wise. Knew that Luke's horse had a good kick and tried to run them off their feet, nearly came off. Couldn't walk in front as Proudy and Budd would be late closers if they were on top of us.....would have waited a bit longer if there had been a breeze horse to keep Tiza in a pocket but not to be, Trent decided to cut the ribbons and steal a break, no complaint from me, he gave him every possible chance. Well done to the Woodies, it was an exciting race, crowd involvement from the "bar" corner was incredible, the racket as they came around each time was fantastic. Matt Young conducted the orchestra brilliantly over all 5 nights, I think he is absolute gold at Busso, a big part of the show.
It is absolutely unique Busso, nothing like it anywhere else in WA, the local club is a blue print for community racing and as long as I am involved, I will always try and have a few runners. The incentives the club provides, trophys on all races, Pony Trots......it is a great 5 weeks. Horse of the Year Jill Mach (5 from 5 and tonight off 50 metres for a $500 bonus), Leading Driver Trent Wheeler, leading trainer Matt Scott (yet again), happiest owner me. Now, Pat Abbott....deserving of an OAM surely......if you can just do something about the Roo's on the way back to Manji.....5 narrow misses last night keeps you alert on the drive back. Another brilliant Busso Carnival with huge crowds, competitive racing the best atmosphere. And finally, "That's what I am talking about".

JayJay during my time on the RWWA Board the Busselton Shire wanted to redevelop Churchill Park and relocate the trot track out of town. They offered a new purpose built facility with a 800m+ track at cost of some $6m I recall.
RWWA opposed the move as the unique Busselton experience would be lost to the many holidaymakers who could walk to the course.  We did not need another Bunbury 40 minutes south.
The lobbying was successful and the trots remain at Churchill Park at least for the present.
Still have fond memories of fielding at Busselton. I set the record hold of $40,000 plus in 1978 and the RBA inflation calculator converts that to $210,000 today.

Wow, $40k is some hold.....1978....I probably assisted in lining your bag lol. Yes, it is unique....the economic rationalists and fun police would shut the place down in a blink of an eye but that would be a very short sighted move akin to the closing of the Perth - Fremantle Rail line.

The banter and wit from the crowd is priceless.....good natured raspberries if you blow the start and are trailing the field, which would see you surrounded by a bunch of hi viz muscle clad  security types and promptly ejected if you engaged in such humour at the cricket or footy. Non venomous, cheerful and without offence either given or taken.

Dozens of kids (and adults) asking if they can pat your horse, access all areas like no other....and the owners, trainers and drivers oblige with all care and good will, strategically steering the kids away from any not so friendly steeds.  And what would become of the Captain Proud fan club? I urge all on here to set aside the dates for next year if you haven't been, it is the most enjoyable track experience in WA......complete with a couple of possums joining the horses in the pre race parade ring under the Peppermint trees.

That was combined turnover on Busselton and GP (probably Pacing Cup night). The father son combination John and Tom Marsden dominated in those days winning half of the program.  They had tremendous local support and were hard to beat.

Just me and one clerk well before computers and writer's cramp at the end of the night for both of us.

The trotting Jack Sheedy ran the show not to be confused with Gentleman Jack of East Perth fame.

Tom still around, still on the committee....they run a Jack Sheedy Memorial.....Bible Jack probably a visitor to Busso to visit his namesake going way back.

What an effort from Jill Mach this year.....winning off 50m last night picking up $500, to go with the $400, $300, $200 etc from previous weeks along with an extra $200 per win the last 4 nights, $2000 for winning the Sweetheart series plus WASBA and EPONA credits .....plus stakes plus trophies.....5 out of 5, not often (ever?) seen .....no doubt a big article coming up in The West. Small horse, huge effort....great training effort.

Busselton is a fantastic advertisement for country pacing in WA.
I only hope it can maintain its existing structure.
As the population moves further south it will only become more popular.
Retain the 8 horse fields for safety and competitiveness, few more meetings and increase the incentives.
    Great product to watch.
PS retain Matt Young, fantastic caller.

Hey Jay Jay - nothing to with the Trots - but what caught my attention was your line re closing the Perth to Fremantle  passenger train line - because i can remember when that actually happened

I think it was Sir Charles Court - he said look  this thing isnt making a quid - its uneconomic - so im closing it - and thats what he did

Thus if you lived between Perth and Fremantle and a pedestrian like me - you could cut through the tracks where ever you liked - because there were only a couple of freight trains a day - and they moved like snails so you could spot them a mile off

And it was actually former Trots enthusiast - Trots tipster - Trots  Publisher - Brian Burke - who said look - vote for me and i will reopen that passenger line service

And thats what he did - so Burkey actually did something useful .

Maybe, maybe not......but then in cohorts with Dallas Dempster (Remember him, of the failed Laurie Connell Petrochemical Plant/Rothwells Bank/WA Inc fiasco), he let a previously snake infested Rubbish Dump at Burswood be "developed" into another Snake Infested high rise rubbish pit from which WA racing and pacing has never recovered.....and it never will, barring a well aimed D9 bulldozer.

Had a greater affect on the Trots JayJay due to the 24 hour trading and night time aspect. As a bookie I lost many regular clients to the Casino particularly the Asian punters.,

At the time no doubt it would’ve been a Catastrophic Shock to G.P but competition was always coming
it was only a matter of when ?
Just like On line Gambling surely has affected Casino Revenue .
If you’re protected by Government per say Hong Kong Racing in regards to protection of your product
you are at the mercy of the consumer and the modern consumer is a very dynamic & selective somehow and I don’t know how you need to continually engage them into your chosen product.
Maybe a Value Add initiative needs to be implemented into Harness Racing?

Just as a matter of interest does anyone think that Busselton Trots would have been better off if they had moved to a new facility out of town?
  • JayJayJayJay    7,629 posts
Nope.....the crowds who can walk over the road to Churchill Park would disappear instantly, the type of horse that race their would have nowhere to go, the trainer base of locals would shrink even further ......was footy better off when they moved to Waverly Park? But then again, I'm no economic rationalist, those oversubscribed and misguided fools who are have cut a swathe through society and its endeared institutions.
