New Zealand cult horse and Group 1 star Te Akau Shark is dead.

Te Akau Racing confirmed the sad news in a statement on Thursday morning, with the gelding's death linked to the degenerative eye condition that forced his retirement from racing last year.

It is understood Te Akau Shark was humanely euthanised after becoming totally blind in both eyes.

"It is with immense pain and sadness that we announce that our beloved Te Akau Shark has lost his brave health battle," the statement said.

"A true warrior, Darryl your heart and courage, your determination and kindness, lit up the lives of everyone privileged to know you - as well as those who admired you from afar.

"You made us laugh, you made us proud, you brought so much joy - we fell in love with you over and over again, every single day with your quirky personality. Your owners, our team, the racing world.

"You changed lives and left your indelible hoof prints stamped all over our hearts. Our grief has no words.

"Rest in peace our beautiful boy at Te Akau Stud, forever to gallop across our vast, green pastures.

"We are shattered by your loss and will be eternally grateful to have had you, our great red giant, in our lives.

"You will be with us always, and forever."

The shock news comes two months after the gelding was retired from racing having failed to recover from a serious eye infection he picked up in Sydney in the autumn.

In a brief but brilliant career on the track, the son of Rip Van Winkle won seven of his 14 starts including the G1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and the G1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m).

The Jamie Richards-trained galloper also finished third to Lys Gracieux in the 2019 Cox Plate (2040m).

****, I didn't know about the eye issue, very sad, was one of my favorite horses.

Dads mate Ron has a handy one in the Richards stable - Entriviere. Put that down in your black book, will be going for a little spell before she crosses the ditch.
    Very gutsy mare.
