Pretty cool story I thought :D

The Millions horse who sits like a dog.

Bloodstock agents spend millions of dollars and hours of research to find a horse to make it to the Magic Millions but Brisbane trainer Sharryn Livingstone found her way into the $2m race with a horse she bought simply because he sat like a dog.

Thelwell was too lazy to parade for Livingstone when she was inspecting yearlings at last year’s Magic Millions but she bought him anyway after falling in love with the colt who prefered to sit in his box instead of stand.

A year on, Livingstone will be looking to win one of Australian racing’s premier contests, just 12 months into her training career after stable star Thelwell put himself on the map by running second to hot favourite Coolangatta in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes on Boxing Day.

“The girls and I went to get him out (to look at) and he just sat there like a dog. I said to them ‘just leave him, give him a minute’. They said he had such a big morning so we thought if he’s had such a big morning, we won’t get a chance to get a bid on him,” Livingstone said.

“After a good 10 or 15 minutes we got him up and he walked up and down and he wasn’t the most perfect put together horse and he was little, but I fell in love with him. He had this cute little face, he was like a cartoon character.”

Thelwell would end up getting passed in at the sale and it was then Livingtone struck, buying him that night privately.

“We brought him home, we went to break in the Epaulette we also bought and he was a bit crazy so I didn’t feel like my facilities were capable so I started breaking in Thelwell instead,” she said.

“He sat like a dog when I got all the gear on him and I started to think ‘I have actually bought a dog.”

Named after British cartoonist Norman Thelwell, who drew illustrations of ponies and horses, Thelwell is now a $26 chance in the race where he meets Coolangatta again after a Friday night hit out at the Sunshine Coast where he won as a $1.70 favourite.

With just five horses in work, Livingstone was the loudest person at Doomben on Boxing Day when her charge was cutting into Coolangatta’s lead late in the race.

The former trackwork rider is attempting to make her name as a trainer now and Thelwell could be the one to put her name up in lights.

“It is super exciting, it is only my first year of training so I am a bit like ‘woah, Jesus’,” Livingstone said.

“If anyone watched him work, they wouldn’t think he has any ability at all. I like to have my horses go around on the bit and carting into it, he just does what he has to do.

“I was pretty excited (when he ran second), the barrier boys could hear us cheering from the grandstand. We were happy to run second, that’s for sure.”

Livingstone says Thelwell has thrived off working at the beach, opposed to the track, a method she is keen to continue to use heading into the Magic Millions Classic.

“I use the beach quite a lot, it is a huge training tool for me, I find my horses a heap stronger when we do it, they love it,” she said.

“He is still quite green, he’s not doing everything correct, hence why we are putting the blinkers on him.”

    Gold Coast.

R4 i reckon Krone can win even with 59.5 and a little maddie Georgies Pride, has been thereabouts and the trainer knows how to keep her horses firing.
R5 Isotope..all over if the jock doesnt stuff it de javu like..
The big ones well i have been all over Coolangatta both literally and figuratively(is a nice place)from her 1st start, with even luck and Jmac switched on 'cause its for big bucks, she should be too good. Will be cheering the horse who thinks he is a dog Thelwell into a place!

In the 3yo Guineas again for 2mil i'm backing a couple drawn poorly one is nearly in the carpark, some drawn wide will still get a good run with cover hopefully one of mine does : Far Too Easy a good honest galloper trained by a battler is great e.w odds and I'm Lethal who O'shea rates highly.Wouldnt be surprised if Hughie pulls one out of his rce from the carpark and gets this colt home first.

    Flemington.

R5 i reckon Blazejowski can roll the other grey if he reproduces the Manifold run..i like the way Joshy Richards steers, a pretty reliable mature aged apprentice and is riding his fair share of winners.

    Rosehill

R4 Sky Command conditions should suit is a Soft 7 atm, just wins imo.
R5 another shorty but not fav Sword Point, looks a promising 3yo he should be launching with the light weight and roll Waller's other runner

Same mate my biggest go, she had had enough on the line..collect excludes the multi I had with Cam Smith that went titsup I really liked him to go top 10 at least, moral is..stick with morals lol
Ps..I'm alive in the early Ascot quad again bigger percentage, have 3 going in the last leg..i'm going for a 2peat!! [-O<

Edit : just noted the divvies if fav wins(very shithouse), the other two are a much better result.

If there was a race for the Flog Hcp this bloke would be carring 63kgs and still win by panels hard held

Tell me you got the early quaddie TS. Didn’t pay much but hey quaddies are hard to snag.
Reckon Cam Smith and Matt Jones must have partied hard after last weeks win. To both miss the cut suggests they were more interested in spending their winnings than focussing on another 72 holes.

Yeh I got it Det, I had the the 1 and 5 as well which were paying 3 times that div or better but as you said a wins a win and the biggie 2 in 2 weeks is unheard of for me.
1.I just don't play them hardly ever and 2.I don't because rarely when I do they nearly always come a gutser lol
So fairly happy and it keeps an interest in some races I don't bet in all the time. Will be going again next week!

Re the golf they were average alright Sungjae Im too, I wasn't confident he would win but missing the cut i did not envisage that.

Read that article too, is he travelling over that I didn't see but suppose so.Imagine the prize money is probably quite good, unsure how they will measure up class wise.
Good experience too for the young S.A lass going over to ride them.

Great result at Sandown for Vic trainer Udyta Clark who was gravely ill nearly dying in late 2020, saddles up a winner with her second runner back since recovering. Not sure she is 100% of previous health but is battling on in the game she loves and was extremely overwhelmed, truly a lovely moment.

    Moonee Valley.

R4 Today could be the day for Salto Angel to get her second win, bet place heavy and a profit at the very least is returned.I backed her place only last start around 2.75.
Fav is a danger strong speed is expected so she should get a crack at them even though drawn the fence.

R5 Having trouble splitting track specialist Yulong Command and Winsum who has been kept fresh and stalks the speed which again could be pacey, does he catch the fav late? Last few bounds I think yes, saver the quinella.

    Randwick.

R7 Competitive Bm78, though the fav is a 1st up jet I like 2 to beat her.Nikohli Beagle and Osamu whose run was huge first up.l, will back both at around 5.50/6 bucks

R8 Bit of a Jarrod Austin theme going today I think he goes ok as a trainer.
Have always had some time for Looks Like Elvis he rarely runs a bad race and with luck in running can run a beauty. Is well up to this class and continues to perform consistently.
Again money to be made just betting place heavy, i backed him also for a place only last start.

R8 Moonee Valley again a big wrap goes out to Pioneer River who is racing in great form, unsure if he can catch/beat In The Boat but will be finishing off hard.
Has placed there twice when not going nearly as well as now, while 9 runs deep into the prep his runs have well spaced over 7 1/2 months and in the right grade which he still is, can definitely win again.

Listened to both trainers on Yulong Command and Winsum yesterday.
I have gone with the Yulong. Track likely to be good 3 or 4. Hoping they won’t catch it.
Not going hard today at “Death Valley”. Hate it when this is the main Melbourne track on a Saturday.

Should be a good race Det that Grandview Avenue may slightly upset your leader Yulong Command...

There are a few ok races generally i'm of the the same view re the concrete jungle, today I'm more pierced off about my 3peat quaddie attempt ffs? They have shifted the goalposts actually the meeting lol oh well.

So I've had a 5 legger at the tennis, have gone "risky" on some legs Cressy to beat the Aussie lad O'Connell and riskier I have two sheila's in the 5 legs haha Barty and Kanepi also to beat the young W.A lass Maddy Inglis.
I won't cry though if one of the Aussies battlers upsets and gets through to 4th round!

Reckon you have nailed those 3. Kanepi is experienced and can play. Only issue may be the heat.
    I have a 3 leg going.
    Demon, Med, and Rublev.
Risk is Rublev against Cilic. But he is in good form so expecting him to progress.

Didn’t have a bet in the 2nd at Randwick but was watching with interest the fav Wild Calm.
The trainer spoke before the race indicating the 1000m was too short and 1200m would be it’s go.
Well phuck me. The horse was ridden not to win or even place. The jockey had no intention of getting it to clear air at any stage and was always happy to steer inside and look at backsides.
When you consider (after watching the first race) that coming down the outside was no disadvantage then you would have to question the tactics.
Definite GET ON next start over 1200m.

Backed the fav too so eked a small profit, knew I pulled the wrong rein backing GI..Lane and a cat horse(or went like one today)bad combo but only one person to blame.
