The Millions horse who sits like a dog.
Bloodstock agents spend millions of dollars and hours of research to find a horse to make it to the Magic Millions but Brisbane trainer Sharryn Livingstone found her way into the $2m race with a horse she bought simply because he sat like a dog.
Thelwell was too lazy to parade for Livingstone when she was inspecting yearlings at last year’s Magic Millions but she bought him anyway after falling in love with the colt who prefered to sit in his box instead of stand.
A year on, Livingstone will be looking to win one of Australian racing’s premier contests, just 12 months into her training career after stable star Thelwell put himself on the map by running second to hot favourite Coolangatta in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes on Boxing Day.
“The girls and I went to get him out (to look at) and he just sat there like a dog. I said to them ‘just leave him, give him a minute’. They said he had such a big morning so we thought if he’s had such a big morning, we won’t get a chance to get a bid on him,” Livingstone said.
“After a good 10 or 15 minutes we got him up and he walked up and down and he wasn’t the most perfect put together horse and he was little, but I fell in love with him. He had this cute little face, he was like a cartoon character.”
Thelwell would end up getting passed in at the sale and it was then Livingtone struck, buying him that night privately.
“We brought him home, we went to break in the Epaulette we also bought and he was a bit crazy so I didn’t feel like my facilities were capable so I started breaking in Thelwell instead,” she said.
“He sat like a dog when I got all the gear on him and I started to think ‘I have actually bought a dog.”
Named after British cartoonist Norman Thelwell, who drew illustrations of ponies and horses, Thelwell is now a $26 chance in the race where he meets Coolangatta again after a Friday night hit out at the Sunshine Coast where he won as a $1.70 favourite.
With just five horses in work, Livingstone was the loudest person at Doomben on Boxing Day when her charge was cutting into Coolangatta’s lead late in the race.
The former trackwork rider is attempting to make her name as a trainer now and Thelwell could be the one to put her name up in lights.
“It is super exciting, it is only my first year of training so I am a bit like ‘woah, Jesus’,” Livingstone said.
“If anyone watched him work, they wouldn’t think he has any ability at all. I like to have my horses go around on the bit and carting into it, he just does what he has to do.
“I was pretty excited (when he ran second), the barrier boys could hear us cheering from the grandstand. We were happy to run second, that’s for sure.”
Livingstone says Thelwell has thrived off working at the beach, opposed to the track, a method she is keen to continue to use heading into the Magic Millions Classic.
“I use the beach quite a lot, it is a huge training tool for me, I find my horses a heap stronger when we do it, they love it,” she said.
“He is still quite green, he’s not doing everything correct, hence why we are putting the blinkers on him.”

Ps..I'm alive in the early Ascot quad again bigger percentage, have 3 going in the last leg..i'm going for a 2peat!! [-O<
Edit : just noted the divvies if fav wins(very shithouse), the other two are a much better result.

Yeh I got it Det, I had the the 1 and 5 as well which were paying 3 times that div or better but as you said a wins a win and the biggie 2 in 2 weeks is unheard of for me.
1.I just don't play them hardly ever and 2.I don't because rarely when I do they nearly always come a gutser lol
So fairly happy and it keeps an interest in some races I don't bet in all the time. Will be going again next week!
Re the golf they were average alright Sungjae Im too, I wasn't confident he would win but missing the cut i did not envisage that.

R4 Today could be the day for Salto Angel to get her second win, bet place heavy and a profit at the very least is returned.I backed her place only last start around 2.75.
Fav is a danger strong speed is expected so she should get a crack at them even though drawn the fence.
R5 Having trouble splitting track specialist Yulong Command and Winsum who has been kept fresh and stalks the speed which again could be pacey, does he catch the fav late? Last few bounds I think yes, saver the quinella.
Randwick.
R7 Competitive Bm78, though the fav is a 1st up jet I like 2 to beat her.Nikohli Beagle and Osamu whose run was huge first up.l, will back both at around 5.50/6 bucks
R8 Bit of a Jarrod Austin theme going today I think he goes ok as a trainer.
Have always had some time for Looks Like Elvis he rarely runs a bad race and with luck in running can run a beauty. Is well up to this class and continues to perform consistently.
Again money to be made just betting place heavy, i backed him also for a place only last start.

Has placed there twice when not going nearly as well as now, while 9 runs deep into the prep his runs have well spaced over 7 1/2 months and in the right grade which he still is, can definitely win again.

Should be a good race Det that Grandview Avenue may slightly upset your leader Yulong Command...
There are a few ok races generally i'm of the the same view re the concrete jungle, today I'm more pierced off about my 3peat quaddie attempt ffs? They have shifted the goalposts actually the meeting lol oh well.
So I've had a 5 legger at the tennis, have gone "risky" on some legs Cressy to beat the Aussie lad O'Connell and riskier I have two sheila's in the 5 legs haha Barty and Kanepi also to beat the young W.A lass Maddy Inglis.
I won't cry though if one of the Aussies battlers upsets and gets through to 4th round!
