Drawing a slightly long bow there Marko. Under 12 down the local park to an ashes at lordes. And if you’re feeling a bit for the Pommy keeper , look at a few of his actions in the first test and against New Zealand. Didn’t see the poms bleating about them. If your going to play the game by the letter of the law as per the Stark catch Bairstows out

Sorry that should have been when he was keeper for. No short memory both of them . Bairstow done the same to Warner I’m the first innings. If Warner didn’t have a brain fade like Bairstow did and he hit the stumps do you reckon they would have withdrew the appeal?. I think not

Marko, if the keeper was standing up to the stumps and took the bails off in one action… would that have been acceptable to you?

    Thats a totally different situation

What Bairstow did - 100s of batsmen have done that through the years

Bairstow has tried that himself keeping - plus the English coach in his  playing days did the same tactic for NZ - but 3 wrongs dont make a right

In the spirit of cricket after leaving a ball the batsman looks back to the keeper and awaits the nod before leaving his crease.
Bairstow arrogantly ignored this in spirit and helped himself.
    Out.

how is it different? keeping up or keeping back... he's entitled to a stumping. carey caught the ball and threw it straight away... the umpire had not called over and carey had not considered the ball to be dead (because he threw it straight away).

if carey was keeping up... do you think bairstow goes for a walk?

doesnt matter if bairstow did it during the same innings... the reason they do it is to unnerve the batsman from batting out of his crease. If you're out of your crease, you're fair game. Thats why bairstow did it to Labuschagne (but missed) and you'll find lots of keepers do it to keep the batsman on his toes.

If carey had waited for him to walk up the pitch... then I might just agree with you... but he didnt, he threw it straight away trying to get a stumping. Bairstow made the mistake of a 10yo.

In fact, one of the 13yo's in my team did the same thing this year... made his ground... then turned around and stood out of his crease... rather than call the other team cheats... I told him "thats the last time you'll do that isnt it?"

Lesson learned... except... you'd think Bairstow would have learned it by now?

Regardless of your overall opinion of the situation - i find the incredible part of this was the execution by Carey. He had one chance to pull it off otherwise the gig would be up. One chance to get the right ball that bairstow leaves his ground early, to get the timing of the throw right - being one motion and hitting stumps after he leaves his ground, and accuracy of the throw. Clutch execution.

As stated by others above, bairstow had a similar opportunity and couldnt pull it off.

Disappointingly what has been overshadowed was the brilliance of Ducketts dismisal. Cary was standing down leg side before the ball was bowled and this enabled him to take the catch. In his normal position, Carey would not have made it.

I do wonder if this was a preconceived plan or if Carey was relying on Hazelwood noticing his position and bowl accordingly. He would have looked like a goose if the ball was outside off and went for 4 byes.

Hey - The Diva i wasnt going to put a further post in - because i need to get back to work - otherwise there will be no punting money come Frid - hah

But Geoff Boycott - hes got a newspaper column and this is what he said

These teams have played brilliant cricket in great spirit and it is a shame when something like that happens to spoil it

If you want to win at all costs then cricket should not be for you. We want people to play hard and fair but surely there are standards to uphold . When batsmen are not trying to taske an advantage then you should not follow the letter of the law - apply some common sense

Iagree totally with Boycott - he makes very good/valid points but probably the key one is - When batsmen are not trying to take an advantage - and thats it - and i can remember way back - in the 60s - Ian Redpath - he had a habit which was taking an advantage - backing up from the non stikers end - so he would be 1-2 metres  over the crease line before thje ball had left the bowlers hand - thus when Charlie Griffiths the big W/Indian fast bowler came into bowl - and  came level with the stumps - with Redpath already 2 metres down the pitch - he took off the bails - and ran Redpath out - ive got no problem with that at all - because Redpath was taking an unfair advantage doing that

Let me just say... that I wouldnt have done it myself as a cricketer.

But... when the ashes are on the line and both teams are pushing boundaries (bowling short pitched at a tail ender is also something i would never do) AND it is within the laws of the game... then you can't expect one team to do it and not the other.

Bairstow tried it himself... and missed (he has single handedly cost both tests with his shabby keeping). Bairstow needs to be smarter and he should know better, being a keeper himself.

Maybe... Carey noticed him trying to do it to Labuschagne and thought... next opportunity, I'm going to get you at your own game? Carey was just better at it!

    Geoff Boycott is a fossil.
Diva is spot on... how about this scenario...keeper up to the stumps, batsman leaves ball but over-balances and his foot leaves the crease and is stumped. He wasn't looking to take advantage but he's out every day of the week.
Whinging poms. Bring on game 3.

If Carey had fumbled the ball and it got away from him, would Bairstow have taken a run if presented, think so.

    anyway, onto the next test...
one thing for sure, the whole Baz Ball and stumping dramas have put test cricket into the spotlight and made it really interesting. Even non-cricket people are talking about it.

Thats as good hundred as you will see from Marsh

Kimberley has still got the best ever century tho in the entire history of Test cricket - in Melb against those 4 terrifying  W/Indian express pace bowlers - and i think he was not out as well . No medium pacers in sight - no relent whatsoever  from those 4 bowlers - yet he made a century not out - given what he had to face( and that is the crucial point) thats the best Test match 100 ever in my opinion

Our top four batters (politically correct) have made 143 runs at an average of 17.87 in this test. The other seven have made 344 runs at an average of 24.5. If Australia is defeated you don't have to look far to play the blame game.

If you take Marsh's & Head's scores out, we'd have been beaten by now.
Just haven't been able to string together partnerships in this test as opposed to the first two. Our tail has failed here as well.
Possibly a combination of a faster and bouncer pitch and/or Mark Wood factor?
Anyway, will be an interesting two sessions left, barring rain.
  • spinkingspinking    3,874 posts
Think we are in trouble . Having to come out after rain delayed play for the best part of the day was always going to be hard . Which made Heads knock even better 2 days left and the old enemy needs 225 odd runs. Win percentage swings there way but this ashes series has thrown up some surprises let hope the Aussie bowlers have a few more up there sleeve

Starc gave it his all(I rate the guy highly)unfortunately in this dig we didn't have another guy supporting as well, pretty arsey play by some of the pom batters too.

Boland was disappointing but ultimately we didn't have enough runs.
Still in a decent position 2-1 up.

Australia was always under the pump but never more so than when Cummins (1/77) advised Starc (5/64) where to bowl.

We are short odds for game 4.
1.40 and the enemy are nudging $5 unsure why such a gap.

There is a fine line between catching one inside the ropes and watching it sale over your head and the ropes when bowling high deliveries at batsman. Especially tail end batsman who have a slag at it to avoid getting clobbered by the high delivery. Which tactic they have used in the last two games. Sometimes think they would be better off just bowling at the stumps and making them play

Great result for Australia to retain the Ashes! Obviously very fortunate with the rain. However, winning the first two tests put us in a position to take advantage of a drawn test.

For all of their success in tests over the past 18 months, have England actually progressed, considering they are in the same position as four years ago i.e. they have not regained the Ashes.
    Thoughts?

Don't think there is much between the two sides. England have been lucky with winning the toss and they have had the better batting and bowling conditions. We certainly miss Nathan Lyon but were obviously lucky with the weather in the last test. A few highlights for me are the keeping of Carey - doesnt miss a beat. However would love to see him score more runs. Great to see Marsh do so well - 3 votes for persistence!!
