Son Of Mac....WA system only counts win earnings for handicap, placings don't count for anything....and there is a 75% discount for 2 year old wins, and a 25% discount for 3 year old wins. It won 2 two year old races in NZ (win earn $4950 and $8250) but because of limits put on what a horse can be penalised according to the overall stake on offer for the race (to "slow down" their progression through the levels), a win penalty of $1125 is recorded for the 2 year old win of $4950 (cap set at $4,500 and 25% of that is $1125) and a win penalty of $1687 is recorded for the $8250 (cap set at $6750 and 25% of that is $1687). It's 3 year old win in NZ earned him $7975 and a win penalty of $5062 (cap set at $6750 and 75% of that is $5062).
So his HWOE (Harness Win Only Earnings ex New Zealand are $8,437 on Life Time Earnings of $80,058. His win tonight cops him a $3375 penalty (75% of the $4,500 cap) taking his HWOE to $11,625 and Level 5 in the WA System. So, he now has LTE of around $85,000, a LTR of 1.54.3 and a HWOE of $11,625 and theoretically could front up at Narrogin in a L5/6 RBD race against, with respect, a field of plodders (and I include my Level 6 horse Follow The Music in that description)  and draw barrier 1 and go around at $1.02.....and this attractive to punters? With NR, at least there is some penalty for placings and his NR is up to 59, but he would have a jolly good time of it racing in the WA system with its very generous treatment of high ability 2 and 3 year olds.
Hope that makes sense, I have simplified it as much as I can and my Maths must be a bit out as I calculated his HWOE at a slightly higher $11,812 but still a level 5.

Yeah we’ve never handicapped for place money and nor should we so all you’ve written is somewhat irrelevant
No - i put the question up - re how that horse would be handicapped - or start off under the WA system in comparism to the NR system - because i thought it was a classic example of a young NZ horse with only a few wins - but banked healthy stakemoney - courtesy of placings in top notch company Grp 1 and Grp 2- so it is a very talented young smart pacer but it only had 3 wins to its name

And Jay Jay gave i thought an excellent answer - he gave the re the money it banked - for winning and placing - how it would be treated under both systems

So he answered my question - and the question was asked - because there have been alot of those type of horses coming to Aust to race

I was asked where he would be handicapped under the WA system. I think I provided an adequate answer which included how his NR was 59, obviously not up to the lofty standards you apply to relevancy. I don't believe I made any hint of a suggestion that we have ever handicapped for place money.

But in todays  Sat West - the 190 year - 50 of the best WA Sporting feats - that is purely an outstanding publication/read - and it should win an award it is that good

Just sensational - and its attention to historical detail - things you wernt aware of - if you havent got todays West - id get a copy because it is a great read

Have a look at this from Globe Derby yesterday. How do you only get 5 weeks for this, does this not look intentional as you could get on the home turn last lap ?. First the big look outwards & then the diversion towards the horse in the Green who is knocked out of contention ?https://www-harness-org-au.akamaized.net/sa/GDC03072309.mp4

    Bunbury today R6 No2 Northern Gaze a play @30/1.

Gets across the 1 easily, not sure it does after that but at its best is a good leader and 3rd run back might be ready to produce somewhere near it.

It is always horrible when anyone loses a horse, any horse but especially one as good as Eighteen Carats. Grim day for all at Rockets Stable, like all in the Industry, they love their horses.

I  read an article on the AHR Site today re Ray Williams in Qld - he said he was last their in 1972 re the inter Dom with a horse called Bay Brigade - i havent looked up the record books - but  im almost certain that the great Welcome Advice won that series

So a question - how good was Bay Brigade

Also their was a picture of Ray with MS - and another bloke holding the horse and it said the part owner Tomlinson ( who owns a stack of horses ) had travelled over with him - so id imagine that was him in the picture - a big solid bloke by the look of it - the picture was not sharp
  • JayJayJayJay    8,020 posts
Yep, Welcome Advice beat Monara and Reichman but Red Vicar an absolute certainty beaten.

Bay Brigade shy of top class but very good all the same. I've known that family for 50 years, Ray's Dad Les pulling the float around with those big old tanks of Valiants, pale blue at one stage. He was a great horse for the family. Les's stables were literally over the road from the Northam Track. Rich history of trotting in the family, Ray's wife Dot a daughter of very high profile trainer, driver, breeder Fred Doy.

He won a stack of races, heat of the Derby as a 3 year old and then went through the classes. Prior to gong to Queensland for the Inters, he won 3 races, a FFA and 2 others at GP, but he didn't like going "the other way" at Albion Park. The year following, he ran 3rd to James Eden and Alecane in a heat of the WA Cup , he split Stitchintime and Tanaka in the Australia Day Cup when 2nd and was 3rd to Dollars Double and Miss Dundee in the Fremantle Cup. Tough and consistent and way above average.

Rob Tomlinson not a big fellow, must have been wearing a big jacket.

    Yes thanks for that

No offence Jay Jay - but when youve got the trainer and owner pictured with the horse - normally the trainer looks the more cluey of the two - thats why i got them back to front - ha-ha-ha

Harness Racing shafted again by TABradio with not even a limited preview of the 10 race program at GP today. Did not even crack a mention by any of the presenters.

Just something that sparked my interest - I wonder how many horses are still going around that raced at Kalgoorlie - The numbers must be thinning fast. And who is going to be the last one standing.

2 i can think of off the top of my head
    - It Aint Royal - racing at a show meet at Gatton tomorrow.
    - Mister Ardee - still going around locally and never runs a bad race.

Short Half Head nonsense....when is someone in power going to do something about the short half head/ nose margin declaration?

Yambukian and Catch A Wave at Melton tonight (and plenty of other examples in jurisdictions Australia wide)....dead heat according to the photo they put up on HRA and I understand it is not the "official print" , I can't see any margin in favour of Yambukian over his brother Catch A Wave....but it certainly isn't a "short half head". It is a nonsense.

Need to have more Monday afternoon meetings from GP, more action in these half a dozen races than the last month of Friday night meetings.

We knew it was coming and, through challenging times, the response seems measured and responsible. Hopefully it’s a case of some short term pain for long term gain.
