WA Horses - Success Outside of WA Since 1984

West Australian Racing
PCPC    2,190 posts

Ok people, here is a nice one for you. I have a mate who is a proud Victorian and he doesn't rate WA racing. I have been telling him for years now that whilst WA racing as a whole is not as good as eastern states racing, if you look through the record books - WA will produce a good horse every now and then who win a Group/Listed race outside of WA.

For the last 2 months I have been finding every single WA horse since 1984 who have won a Group/Listed race outside of WA. Below is the list that I have got. I'm not sure why I chose 1984 as a starting point - not sure at all but I did and that's the starting point. See below my list and add any horses that I have missed out - I am running out of horses to find and this is where your help is appreciated. Before anyone comments, you may be surprised at some of the horses who are on this list but I have checked their career records and they along with all the other horses on this list - have won Group/Listed races outside of WA.

When this little research assignment is complete, I will show my friend and this might give him a different opinion about WA Racing.

Cedarberg and Ethiopia were bred here but have never raced on a WA track so take them of the list ,what did Heed The Toll win must have been Adelaide ,same as Jungle Dawn what did she win over east ?

Didn't Jungle Dawn win big races in the US? I'll stand corrected if she didn't.

PC asked for horses that won group/ listed races outside of WA, not necessarily just over east.

Miss Muffet? I remember her racing east, can't recall if she won anything noteworthy though.
  • dungydungy    9,278 posts
Yeh but the Trevor Delroy horses Cederberg and Ethiopia never raced here bred locally

Bred in WA, owned in WA, return to WA to spell. I would think they could be considered WA horses.

Is Buddy Franklin a West Australian or a Victorian?

    Ok

Radman - Yeah I had Placid Ark and Starstruck already on the list but for some reason didn't include him in on my original post, had a brain snap.

Dungy - Heed The Toll won the G3 Rain Lover Plate at Victoria Park, Adelaide and the Group 3 West End Draught Stakes which is now known as the Lord Reims Stakes - a race in Adelaide. Also in regards to Cedarberg and Ethiopia, as Radman has said - Cedarberg and Ethiopia were bred in WA, foaled in WA and are still owned in WA - they just don't race here. Cedarberg and Ethiopia fall into the same category as Black Knight who is a West Aussie - bred and owned in WA but raced in the eastern states.

Ran in the late 1980s. Unfortunately Miss Muffet didn't win any Group/Listed races outside WA.

i know..another tragic that dropped on the track i think.......Just that PC said that it and Ethiopia don't race here.

Which is correct, just that i thought that Cedarberg didn't race anywhere...anymore..

Cedarberg became the second horse WA horse to win the Group 1 The BMW (Tancred Stakes) in 2011. The first WA horse to win The BMW was Heroicity in 1992

What I intend on doing when I have finished this research is put all of the WA horses who have won Group/Listed races outside of WA from 1984 onwards on this thread. Included will be the actual horse, career record and their major wins (Group/Listed) with the major wins outside of WA highlighted.

    Cheers,

    PC.
