MORE WA JOCKEYS AND TRAINERS DURING 1950S-1970S

West Australian Racing
magpie51magpie51    3 posts

Thanks for this forum for providing me with assistance in
relation my query pertaining to WA Jockeys & Trainers for the period
1950-1970s. I really do appreciate your assistance. I’m undertaking a project
of creating a database of stakes and principal races for Australia. Currently
I’m working on Western Australia. As you note I’m very keen to include the Christian
names of both jockeys and trainers in my records. This is because in the old
days they didn’t get the re-cognisation that should have

 As you can imagine the
scope of my query can be somewhat extensive, but any assistance will be
extremely grateful. It is very difficult to obtain details pertaining to
trainers during the period 1954-1978. You may or may not be aware that the ATR
didn’t include the trainers’ names prior to its 1978 edition except for some of
its principal races!!(It’s hard to believe) These being the Perth Cup and WA Derby.

 Generally, you need
to refer to race-books or local newspapers which are often only available in
the State they are printed.  I have been
to Vic State Library and they don’t carry any newspapers for WA.  I actually lodged my original query to see if
I could obtain some response. Now I know you are out there  I hope you don’t mind  if I forwarding some additional queries .Here’s
hoping you enjoy the trip down memory lane with some of these horses.

 Again, I would like
to re-iterate my gratitude to this forum for its assistance.

Back in the early 70s I was part owner with a 3 other shearing mates in a horse named GREAT CHEST. We gave it to Alan McDougall to train in Albany where we all lived at the time. I recall one day David Edwards rode him in a 2000 metre race on the old track at Albany when he ran 5th. On returning to scale after the race he informed Alan that with a bit more age and a bit further in distance he would be a handy horse. McDougall exploded pointing out that he had just sat 3 wide for the entire journey and that he was 8 years old. He did end up winning a nice race for us at Pinjarra With Bernie Duggan aboard and we backed him to win $26000 between the 4 of us which was good money in those days. On the way back to Albany full of turps one of the co owners, the late Harry Pinchin, got a bit excited and was talking Perth cups etc so I told him that he could buy my share for $4000 on the condition that he raced for me in the Esperance cup. He jumped at the offer. He ran second in the cup and Harry paid me the $4000 and all were happy. Unfortunately for the 3 owners left in the horse and the horse he broke a leg at his next start and was destroyed. Bernie was at a very mature age at this time but still a good judge having declared the horse as a good thing the day he won.

Keith Mifflin rode one of my faves a horse called Farranfore a handy stayer. Which brings back memories of another favourite called Buckshot Bandit... I think Marillyn Fagan rode sometimes. Does anybody know it's background ? I think it ran 2nd in a Perth Cup at big odds.

Craig Wake was an outstanding jockey. Can remember him winning an approx 2200 metre race at Belmont Park on a Bob Meyers trained horse called Wizardry. Never seen a horse go around that fast over a journey. Except perhaps Rocket Racer over 3200. Wizardry flew from barrier to box. I think it was at Northam the first day he began his riding career , riding for Bob Meyers that day he rode extremely well. Knee high to a grasshopper. The tragic fall that ended his life I'm sure was the final race of the day and final meeting at Ascot before going to Belmont Park the following week. Have a feeling Danny Miller rode the winner of that fateful race. Can to this day still see Craig Wake walking his mount around the mounting yard before going out onto the track. Did not go the races every week and only sometimes to the country races , but just happened to be there at the beginning of his career and the day it tragically ended.

No, he hasn't...and he should have. Kempy used to ride for dear life in a close finish, probably would be severely sanctioned these days for his "urgings" but that was then and this is now, times change. Remember Sanhedrins Pride very well...think it was a Sires Produce?? or similar when it won for Jeff Berry and Mal Senior?? and had a good collect. Did one of the Fingers also come over and ride for Hollywood George in the bad old days?

was the "Stink", jay jay? :-B

George did bring some handy riders to the west but I still think Keith Watson was probably his best money rider.
He is still going strong and training winners.
He has written a book that will have a lot of so called highly regarded officials ducking for cover.
