More chance than the Freo Freo Dockers

Rule changes might make it slightly tougher for Peel to bring up 3 in a row but the Dockers are finally starting to get a bit of depth so Peel should still have some handy players running around for them. Balance may be the biggest problem. There's going to be a lot of talls to fit into the side.

Rule changes might make it slightly tougher for Peel to bring up 3 in a row...

The rule changes are as follows:
    • The five-game minimum qualification must be League matches.
    • The introduction of a minimum three WAFL League matches post June 30 requirement.
    • An adjustment of the AFL-listed player cap in finals matches down from 15 to 12.
    • The ability for AFL Clubs to submit special requests to the WAFC for young emerging players or players returning from injury to participate in the WAFL Finals when not qualified in accordance with the rules above. Any request endorsed must sit within the maximum cap of 12 players.

The rule changes above only applies when the AFL Club is eliminated or not participating in an AFL Final on the same weekend as the WAFL Partner Club.

Some good recruits for a few clubs. Nick Suban playing for South Fremantle. Johnathon Griffen back at East Freo. Kane Mitchell returns for Claremont.

WAFL stalwart Tallan Ames retired from Swans. Was a very good player.

Subiaco, Peel and South again look the major three.

"East Perth" will be right up there as well Riders as their masters the Eagles are in for a shocker of a season and a lot of experienced Eagles will be transitioned out the door through the WAFL to give younger blokes a go much like at "Peel" the last couple of years.
Unfortunately as has been the case for a while now in the WAFL the Top 4 are already locks weeks before a ball has even been bounced with $ubiaco, the 2 afl reserves sides & SF certainties, whilst the rest of us play for the last spot remaining in the Finals with EF after going on a massive recruiting spree in the off season the favourite to fill the only spot left!

Fucken ridiculous the way eagles (east perth) and dockers (peel) players go to so called 'feeder' clubs!

Nic Nat running around in an east perth jumper makes me wanna puke! [-X

Agree VK my next two were East Perth, with Sharks the improvers.

Perth Demons holding up the ladder. Would it be correct to say that they have made the finals only once since 1978 ?

Would it be correct to say that they have made the finals only once since 1978?

Since losing to East Perth by 2 points (79-81) in the 1978 Grand Final (in front of a crowd of 45,126), Perth have made the finals only three more times (1986, 1991 and 1997).

In 1986, they beat Claremont in the S/F by 73 points (162-89), then lost to Subiaco in the P/F by 71 points (97-168).

In 1991, they beat East Perth in the E/F by 7 points (86-79), then lost to Swan Districts by 88 points (63-151).

In 1997, they beat East Perth in the S/F by 67 points (114-47), then lost to South Fremantle in the P/F by 37 points (90-127).

Thanks Paul..yes were Premiers in '76,77 hot favourites in 78 and despite Peter Bosustow kicking 7 majors lost by 2 points to East Perth in driving rain.

No Grand Final appearence for 40 years. Would be a few wooden spoons in those 40 years too.

Yes I recall Perth in 83 and 84 very poor but that didn't stop them in 84 being too good for East Perth in a game at Lathlain, the Royals were shocking that day.

Followed East Perth closely in 84 and never missed a game, never seen such a bunch of scrubbers make the finals! However they were very gutsy. Went straight out in the first semi to Claremont.

I remember that season well Riders EP did very well just to make the Finals considering the player drain they had at the time to the East & to other WAFL clubs as the incoming President Mal Atwell slashed the wage bill to save costs at a time EP were in financial trouble.
Perth also beat us (SD) that year and we went on to win the flag our 3rd in a row under John Todd so even tho they finished last they had a capable side on their day especially with Rob Wiley & Peter Bosustow returning from the VFL that year.

I'm pretty sure there was a bit of a powerhouse club in the 2000's where every new player had a second job pouring a beer.

Exactly right VK...one of the most amazing things in 84 was when early in the season South Fremantle gave East Perth the biggest hiding at Perth Oval, it's still on the WAFL site as a record defeat of EP by SF.

Now that day had never seen a better WAFL team. South were a machine, but at the same time EP had nothing. End of the year South have missed the four and EP made it. The next two occasions they met in the season EP won both times. Incredulous.

Upsetting the eventual premiers at Hands Oval Bunbury in the first round helped to set up the Royals season that year to finish fourth..was just on guts because they had very little.

Recall EP getting over East Fremantle in a massive upset...a Regan ( famous WAFL name ) playing for EF had his jaw broken. It was scarey stuff. The Sharks finished up making the the GF against Swans. They were at least a ten goal better team than East Perth.

That SF vs EP game you brought up Riders was that the game young Morgan from EP got absolutely poleaxed in a huge shirtfront from Stephen Michael?
It was a massive talking point at the time and im not sure young Morgan played many if any League games for EP after that?

It may have been VK, but don't think it was...things were bad enough that day. Morgan was quite slight and do recall him, sandy curly hair maybe number 9, he was handy too. Playing for SF that season also was the following years 1985 Brownlow Medal winner in Brad Hardie. How South missed the four in 84 was stunning. They were star studded.

I remember future Collingwood premiership player Michael Christian playing well at Hands Oval against Swans. Some of East Perths former players at other clubs in 84 were blokes like Craig Edwards, Paul Arnold, George Michalyzk, champ Steven Curtis had gone to SA. They were just a few.
Very good player in Peter Thorne had left too. Think Larry Kickett might have gone to Claremont too. John Hayes had gone to South. Chris Allen he went to Swans.

Blokes like Russell Sparks came on in leaps and bounds. Big bad John Ironmonger had a good season. He did very well for the Sydney Swans going there the following season. Robert Solin was as tough as old boots.

Also VK East Perth in 1985 one year later I'm pretty sure got the wooden spoon. They could have easily finished last in 1984.

Also 86 for East Perth no better about second last I think...then in 87 ( the Eagles first year ) it was a classic finish to the season....Perth Oval and bottom of the ladder East Perth against top two team East Fremantle...East Perth had to win to avoid the wooden spoon. East Perth forever boys, they pulled one out of the hat.

Following the miracle of 4th in 84 they finished around last or second last in 85, 86 and 87.

As you can imagine VK I was over the moon when they left Perth Oval. ( Not!! ) Gosh that was an underrated nice ground to watch football.

Another guy who did well for EP in 84 although right at the end of his career and just a shadow of the player he was. Former South Fremantle and Collingwood champ Stan Magro...a few blokes still having a look behind them if Stan was in sight. He was a bonus just being on the park, EP dropped him a few times, fair dinkum staggering.

Top cricketer too was John McGuire Skids....probably the most unluckiest cricketer of all time not to get a game for WA in the Sheffield Shield as he scored a poultice of runs for Mt Lawley in WACA premier grade cricket.

Riders even though I’m a Black in one eye White in the other mad SD supporter I must admit I loved going to Perth Oval to watch the footy.
Beautiful setting on the city’s doorstep with those lovely old trees bordering the old Lotons Park and the old heritage gates.
It is so sad to see what has not only become of the grand old ground but the former great club that graced the once hallowed turf.
Witnessed first hand some cracker SD vs EP games in the early 1980s that were full to the brim and an atmosphere to die for.

VK can recall another decent hit in 84.A spindly young fellow for Perth got poleaxed by Stan the Man coming the other way...it was a bad one but to this blokes credit he grimaced, stayed upright and played on.

At the time thought this guy even though raw and spindly he may go ok for the Perth going by that crunch.

He left Perth about end of 86 and finished up playing over 100 games for Melbourne and 11 years after the 1984 hit at Lathlain Park was a Premiership player for Carlton in 1995.

His name Earl Spalding. The Duke.

Yes and he's got the job ahead of him there. They did beat the Royals in the final home and away game last season. Think the line was around 55 to 60 points and the Demons won by a kick in a gigantic upset.

Stan Magro played just the 20 games for EP in 83 and 84. Injuries caught up with him but certainly recall he had some presence out on the park in those twenty games.

East Perth were a bunch of scrubbers in 83 and 84 but still made the final four both years on guts 'n determination. Another bloke that had outstanding ability was Willy Roe - he also went to South Fremantle. Kevin Sparks and Greg Carpenter ( a future Melbourne Cup handicapper) both went to Subiaco in 1985.

No doubt Stanley had a presence out on the field like anyone who saw his shirtfront on Alex Jeasaulenko back in the late 70s would have had me looking around to see if Stan was in the vicinity. X_X :-SS

Didn't South have some rough diamonds!!

Stan Magro, Basil Campbell, Mark Jackson, Don Haddow, Stephen Michael, Benny Vigona, none of them were backward in coming forward.

Simon Outhwaite he could dish a bit out too. There's another couple of them too...just won't come to mind.

Just thought of one more VK...Tony Amoroso...he was from Collie I think...very good rugged tough footballer.

Willie Roe was named in South Fremantles indigenous team of the century. Never ever given a fair go at East Perth.

Craig Edwards a huge loss for East Perth won a Sandover Medal at South Fremantle.

Don Haddow he was a frightening character- saw him deliver a few ( off the ball! ). Fremantle Oval around the members area for visiting teams was as frightening as it gets.

Fremantle, Bassendean and Leederville probably the scariest for any Royals supporter.

VK another tough one at South Fremantle was Wayne Delmenico, he made a junkyard dog look tame. Mean as they come!

Very underachieving club South were at stages from 1982-86, for the talent and vigour they had. Must have been around 84 or 85 that John Worsfold debuted for the Bulldogs and they had John Dorotich around the same time. How they missed the four in a few of those years was remarkable.

Said something about the competition too. It was uncompromising.

It was top class uncompromising WAFL footy indeed Riders back in the 70s & 80s, no real easy games, no easy kicks and plenty of skill and goals.
