On a day when the Perth Cup should be run ( unbelievably isn't 8-| ) we can still rely on the tradition and holiday atmosphere of the Busselton trot meeting.

If this evening can half measure up to night one, will be in for a meeting of open races, tactics, luck in running and the main skill - getting away safely from the stand.
Victoria threw away standing starts - long live the Busso round and the art of standing starts.

Shannon Suvaljko should get a winner or two, however after giving him the big wrap from the other night can sometimes mean doom! But am sure will give nearly all of them every chance.

A very even bunch of horses at Busselton, could throw a tea towel over the lot of them - that's also what makes it so entertaining.
Leave the ubiquitous word ''turnover'' behind and bring on the fun and enjoyment of the Busselton monthly round.
+1 -1

Magical Mitch - the quintessential battler. May not win another race. But that's what Busselton is all about. The opportunity for that type of horse to earn some money.

The front running drive - not bad either. The second horse home from the breeze that might be worth following for the next meeting.

If somebody said Charlie El will win two races in a row anywhere - well that won't be happening!

Shannon Suvaljko over the first two nights of the carnival.
12 drives - 7 winners, 3 seconds, one third, one unplaced. 11/12 in top three.
Add long priced winners and place getters at GP - he's smokin!

Joe Suvaljko wins the last and a Suvaljko quinella. Can't beat 'em.

Not often that a full brother to a Pacing Cup winner scores a win at Busso. well done to Steve Jelfs and Shannon's drive was a ripper.  Another very competitive night of standing start racing but the new model might throw a spanner in the works for Friday night?? The concept of "Like Against Like" might face an acid test if certain nominated horses accept to race on Friday and some trainers might be scratching like a dog with fleas.

Roman Reign Shannon on Boxing night bolts in. Steve Jelf New Year Night unplaced.

Magical Mitch Steve Jelf on Boxing Night beaten 38m by Roman Reign. Shannon drives and it wins New Years Night.

    Says it all.

He is only allowed to drive one in each race :D

Loved the win of Kamendable Lad for Joe Suvaljko, 1465 days since he last won (his maiden at Wagin on December 27, 2014). Quite appropriate that Joseph and Mary win a race over Christmas.

Gotta love Busso Club.....bonus payments being made ($200) if you win a 2nd or 3rd race over the carnival. And in keeping with tradition, the wonderful Pat Abbott, cheque book in hand (remember them, cheques?) and handwrites the cheque and hands it over with a smile and a thank you for supporting the club....bit chilly at the end of the night but the hot donuts were again front and centre.

Looked another ripping crowd at Busso last night JJ, it really is a great time of year for harness racing (when isnt) with good weather, great crowds and quality pacing prevalent.

Loved the drive on Kamendable Lad too, he looked to be battling a few times, then again so did the runner up and third horse!

Had a look at the breeding on a few last night - an Elsu, Christian Cullen and a handy horse from Victoria - Safari, all sired runners. Three beauties.

Think Christian Cullen may have been controversially scratched from a Miracle Mile about 40 mins before start time, when a raging hot favourite. Not sure now if it was him or not. Pretty sure was a Kiwi horse.

Did you notice on Sky you can actually see the people lining the course at far flung country towns throughout Australia in summer. Holiday crowds but also people enjoying the warmer nights. Trotting is a night sport.
Or run them at night in summer and day in winter.

Gloucester Park - a perfect location to run daylight Sunday meetings on sunny crisp winters days.

A lot of the smaller and hobby trainers and drivers have "day jobs" Riders.....fine in theory but they would be further disenfranchised if it became all day meetings, the night time midweeks at least give them a chance of getting to the races without doing a days pay.

Another bonus at Busso....was in the Office and noticed a box of books on the front counter....$5 bucks each....about 10 copies of Peter Sweeney's book "The Mighty Mount Eden". I had a copy years ago, lent it out to someone to read, never got it back. I couldn't get the 5 bucks out my pocket quick enough. If anyone else wants one, there are about 5 or 6 left...message me if you want one, I had been searching for a replacement copy for years......Bingo.

Busselton Administrators certainly are renowned for their longevity and dedication to the task.

Pat Abbott and prior to Pat, Jack Sheedy have put in countless hours at the track.

I was a little disappointed that the Club decided to dispense with On Course Bookmakers some years ago. Anything that adds atmosphere to a night at the trots should have been preserved.

It is now official Shannon Suvaljko has now taken over from Tom Marsden as the King of Busselton.

Tom and his father trainer John dominated Busselton in the 70s and 80s

Only need Callan ( who drove very well down there last year ) and Emily Suvaljko to join the party! Some drivers and no offence ( I wouldn't have a clue how to do it ) but they find it difficult to get them away, whereas Suvaljko seems to anticipate it to to a tee.

Also if his drive is a little scratchy early it's only for a fraction of a second, then has it into its gear accelerating. Must be in the hands or something.

Also not forgetting he does drive for one trainer who is an expert in standing start barrier manners.

Had supper with Tom after the meeting last night.....they invented the word "gentleman" especially for old Tom....what a marvelous fellow he is.

I think WA's own Jack Morris was also a controversial late scratching from a Miracle Mile back in the early 90s....all part of the V'Landys theatre at the time me thinks!

Like to see Busselton run a marathon around 3300 metres!
Lose track of the laps now especially over the 2400, a marathon would be interesting.

Chokin started as a threeyearold  in miracle mile and collapsed  in 91.

Busselton trotting started after 1970;;;? have a  booklet with all clubs with the number of meetings they had in w.a. for 69-70 season  and mentions Busselton a new club going forward.

Busselton needs a couple youngins on the board. The entertainment decreases every year. Used to have a bike giveaway every night, pony trots called and they'd start in the front straight, not the back, more food stalls. They're relying on holiday crowds and momentum but every year the crowd is getting a little smaller
  • JayJayJayJay    7,629 posts
The year Chokin collapsed, Barry Purdon trained both the victor and the vanquished. Christopher Vance came from last to win...I think Westburn Grant was in the field (3rd?)...was the night that Mount Eden lead the field out to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the greatest ever performance of horse that anyone witnessed, his 1971 annihilation of the best in Australasia.

Talking about the Miracle Mile - some drivers are jinxed - with certain races - try as they might - they just cant win it

Brian Hancock had so many fancied horses year in year out in the MM - but they never fired a shot - never looked likely . And some drivers had the wood on others when it mattered - like Vic Frost used to dominate Hancock - Vic would have the luck and BPH would have none

Similar with Gavin Lang and FRK - they just couldnt win the Inter Dom Pacers Final

Top night of racing, the caller"s input pre-race,plus in the run he goes along way to make it very exciting to listen to same as craig rail at Mildura.

Bottom end players need to enjoy success and Busselton sure does provide that opportunity, well done to connections of classic air who was one week shy of five years to win her first race, from her first listed trial date. and now  its 2nd and third wins have come up in the last 8 months, allbeit   with different connections

karmedale jack 1803 days between wins now has won two in four days..

Joey Charles  Christmas presents were  copy of back to the future ,a Busselton aggression pill, & 2019 rocket launcher  he sure  has  launched  into the new year, well done keep it up.

Kamendable Joe's return to form shows that small tracks can really suit some knee belters. He has been as rough as guts going in a straight line on big tracks sometimes but is kept balanced by the slower maximum speed attainable at the Busso saucer .
Had a coupla bucks on KD Stratton based on the possibility of it leading......one paced but when it found the lead that pace was plenty good enough...$21 fixed ....come to papa.

Echo all that @savethegame , Joseph and Mary utilising all 12 days of Christmas. And knock me over with Classic Affair getting some breaks to win.  Matty Young does a superb job on course, he has a feel for the game having been around horses and sounds like his job is a pleasure for him. His input in the run on how the backmarkers and favourites were coping with racing around the "pudding bowl" was great.
It did get a bit brisk last night, wind chill factor....I was on "ungearing and wash down horses" duty, and after getting a good soaking from Charlie El, had to rug up with every thing I could find.
Plaudits to Corey Peterson....we were ribbing him about getting off Always Arjay and coming to Busso but he then puts in two absolute jet steers and it ain't no easy feet to get Kaydee over the line. Has learnt very quickly the foibles of the Busselton Track. His drive on Kym Neal's horse was outstanding.
Still don't think the handicapping of some backmarkers is anywhere near right but it proved a couple of points....it ain't as easy as it looks to win a race at Busso off a backmark, especially if your horse doesn't step really cleanly....the "Hawk" team did put great interest into the racing.
