Might as well get the WAFL up again after 2 rounds to see if any interest on PTT apart from me and @Village Kid!

Any new readers feel free to join in!

So far into 2019 Subiaco looks the team to beat, on their way towards a winning streak as long as Winx and Black Caviar put together. However feel Claremont are going to give them a fright somewhere along the line.

They are the only two teams that can win it, great to see Perth continue to improve and definetly good enough to finally make the finals. A home final at Lathlain Park would be well deserving for them.

Peel Thunder and West Coast Eagles could be topsy turvy all season, as seen so far.

South Fremantle have had plenty of chances and don't look quite as strong this year but should be a part of the finals.

West Perth also will be about the place but will struggle against the Lions and Tigers.

The other three Swan Districts, East Perth and East Fremantle unfortunately will be holding the ladder up as they all fight to avoid a wooden spoon with the Sharks being the favourites to be the cellar dwellers.

Say unfortunately because the WAFL badly needs those three well supported traditional clubs to be doing well.

Subi and Claremont the two lowest supported teams to dominate the competition.

Premiership winner - Claremont.
Best outsider for flag - West Coast Eagles.
Wooden Spoon - East Perth or East Fremantle

+1 -1

Big Tab Jackpot on the Pick 14 over Easter. That's the 9 AFL games + the 5 WAFL.

My thoughts on the five WAFL games - but don't take them as gospel - have seen many an upset in the WAFL over the years.

Subiaco v West Coast Eagles - Subi could win this easily, they often rise to the occasion in these types of big games - however don't be surprised if the Eagles pull off the boil over!
This is a tricky game - could be way out here but Eagles to provide the surprise win by 3 points.

Peel Thunder v East Fremantle...the Sharks finished all over Peel to upset them last year. On paper Peel comfortably, but could be a bit closer than expected. The Thunder by 28 points.

East Perth v Claremont - good win by the Royals over the Black Ducks but they won't be winning this one. Claremont to lead from go to whoa and win by 55 points.

Swan Districts v Perth - the Demons are on fire! These two teams nearly always have a great clash, it's at Bassendean, but Perth will be warm favourites. They wouldn't have started faves at Basso too often for along time, the Demons to win this one but can envisage an upset looming!
    Perth by 17 points.

South Fremantle v West Perth - when these two play each other always difficult to pick. Will go for the Bulldogs at home they'll be faves and should win, not totally convinced though!
    South Fremantle by 13 points.

Unfortunately it looks like being yet another long year ahead for the once mighty Black & Whites Riders!

82,83,84 does seem along away for Swans VK although not to forget they did win the flag again in 1990 when think Peter Hodyl was skipper, John Todd again coach and a famous Black Duck name won the Simpson Medal - Greg Walker.

Also 2010 is much more recent when Swan Districts "stole" the premiership away from Claremont on the back of the greatest performance in any WAFL game I've seen - Andrew Krakouer. Be shaking the head at his b.o.g. for along time to come.

Can just remember Billy Walker playing - picture him at Bassendean, jet black slick back hair, socks up. He must have been right at the end of his career but my goodness he looked a footballer.

I liked Greg Walker as a footballer VK, was rapt he won the Simpson Medal - you can't buy them at Coles! Was a better player than a few gave him credit for.

Yes Greg did win the Simpson Medal in the 1990 GF and was a fine goalkicking rover in his own right for the Black & Whites and had a good career here and in SA for a short time Riders.
It wouldnt have been easy being the son of our greatest ever player at SD but Greg did very well to carve his own niche, unfortunately his younger brother Brett had his footy career ruined by injury.

I was at Basso a couple Fridays back for Sideys  funeral Vilage Kid. There was some of the greats  to play in the black and white present. It was like a walk  down memory lane. Some have aged well others not so well. Billy Walker still looks remarkably good. Looking at him if he couldn't kick a footy should have nearly been a jockey.

The Cable boy's another two that would've felt that weight VK. Shane Cable saw him play some terrific games and remember thinking when he was in and out of the Demon's team that East Perth should make a play for him.

Dean & Brett Farmer also - Dean was a very good ruckman and looked to have great potential. Brett though completely different type of footballer - not fast, but a real goal sneak who could read the play exceptionally well - he would have a few quiet games down at Tigerland but plenty more where he'd kick a packet of goals.

The 1990 flag that Swans won...also against Claremont...still say Swans sometimes could "frighten" it out of a more talented Tiger's line up,and East Perth as rank underdogs could upset Claremont in the 80's when the Tiger's had a ten goal better team on paper.

Exactly as the Tiger's have a ten goal better team this coming round!

Haha yes...as said before, when was at Bassendean watching East Perth v Swans at Bassendean he use to scare me and was only buying an ice cream at the Mr. Whippy.

Look this very morning was just talking to somebody who said that several years ago something went wrong with his car - not quite sure what it was now, but had to be moved or something like that and Ron Boucher was their to help - he said he lifted it!! Haha I believe him.

VK not all the time as you would know did Swans have the wood on Claremont because recall listening to a very big game ( before the Eagles debut year of 87 ) from Bassendean oval and think Swans would've been favourites and remarkably Steve Malaxos and think Brett Farmer kicked about 15 goals between the two of them.

Steve Malaxos was a bit of forward pocket specialist when first starting at Claremont. What a wonderful tigerish footballer he became, finished playing up the field and backline too.
Great player - controversially late in his career dropped for a game at the Eagles, pretty sure a final.

Most satisfying wins as a East Perth supporter - beating Swans at Bassendean - it very rarely happened! But we did get the better of them at Bunbury opening round of 1984! Swans third premiership in a row year.
The very best though was gaining a victory over East Fremantle or South Fremantle at their home grounds - or perhaps one thing better - and that was knocking over the college boys Claremont - anywhere! Haha

Coming to think of it...a win over West Perth at Leederville Oval was pretty good too. It was suburban warfare.

Certainly had very passionate supporters Swan Districts, still do, and all the clubs had the same but SD, WP, EP, EF & SF were the big ones.

Subi, Claremont, Perth had their fervent support base too, just not quite as many, but when apart of finals they definetly grew!

That Claremont forward line in 1981 kicked a poultice of goals Riders.

Warren Ralph at Full Forward kicked 127 goals
Steve Malaxos in a Forward Pocket kicked about 90 goals
Brett Farmer in a Forward Pocket kicked about 80 goals
Phil Krakouer on a Half Forward Flank kicked over 50 goals
Jim Krakouer as a Rover resting up Forward kicked 50 goals
Graham Moss at Centre Half Forward with stints in the Ruck kicked 49 goals.

Give me that style of footy everyday of the week over teams kicking just 7 goals each!!

Yes for sure VK and from recollection when Malaxos and Farmer slotted a bag of goals between them at Bassendean, the final margin was still very close. High scoring tight games certainly had an aura about them.

These days the Leading Goalkicker barely kicks 50 goals in the WAFL & AFL.
Modern coaches have destroyed the good ol days of goals aplenty.
Bring back the 100 goal a year Full Forward....and get rid of modern coaches I say!

VK as Malcolm Blight said...it's a simple game - there's four post's up one end and four up the other end - the two big one's we try to get it through them as often as possible, up the other end we defend them as best we can.

A different type of coach that fellow - hard to knock though - he took the Crow's to two premierships when underdogs both times - against St Kilda and North Melbourne.

Was actually the last playing coach in the AFL or VFL as it was known back then - North Melbourne 1981.
By the end of 1981 Barry Cable had replaced the mercurial Blight as coach.

I loved Malcolm Blight's philosophy on coaching.
Heard him interviewed a few years ago where he said he couldnt give a rats toss bag whether the opposition kicked 20 goals as long as his side kicked 22 or more.
    My sort of coaching!

He got the best out of Darren Jarman in the Grand Final against St.Kilda - scorched them in the final quarter - today Jarman would be running off the field after he kicked a major and not back on for 10mins! Sports science - gone mad. Jarman thrived on adrenalin.

The Geelong teams that Blight coached - nearly always in the finals and Grand Finals, couldn't crack one but how good were they to watch ?!! He let them attack and run amuck - still keeping the other team to a lesser score more often than not.

If Blighty was over attacking, well it's gone to the other extreme today.

Glad there is a thread that has got a bit of traction on WAFL.....I'll go for a quinnie, the mighty Bulldogs and the bludgeoning force of the West Coast. Yes you all know i'm an Eagle fan, but The Bulldogs have been in my blood from birth.

Whether they will be good bad or the death (if they dominate) of the WAFL, I think having the Weagles in the comp will bring a few people through the turnstiles and hopefully add to the interest in the WAFL.

In teh 80's it was great to watch South and Swans smash Mossy at every opportunity.. There he was runnign around in his tiara and tutu in his handbag, while the Bullies and Swannies cruised around the park with a club and a pair of knuckle dusters beating him up. The difference in the chardonnay clubs of the Westies and everyone else was massive

There should be no such thing as 'over attacking' mate...that is how our great indigenous game should be played at all times!

Interesting quinella there Rio and a rough chance, like a 330/1 rough chance! No that's not quite right..feel both South and West Coast will make the finals.

Make no mistake the Eagles maybe up and down all year in the WAFL but if they make the five and bearing in mind the senior side will go deep into September which will make every squad member available to play in the WAFL finals then they are a sneaky chance!

Subi - Claremont - Smokey - West Coast.

Great idea West Coast coming in - get some spite back into the comp! Eight other traditional teams ( exclude Peel ) will love to compete against them and beat them! Some old fashioned WAFL supporters too.

Docker's and Eagles should've always had their own team in the WAFL exactly as Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide have done for years.

VK that is correct isn't it...for as long as West Coast are involved in the finals then all player's will be eligible to play in the WAFL finals ? That's fair enough and makes sense.

If that's the case ( injuries can put a halt to it though ) then expect West Coast to be a hope. ( If they make the five ).

Going on the SANFL the Eagles ( and Peel ) will very rarely dominate - most years lately the Crows and Port reserve's have hardly put a dent in the comp, think there have been occasions where both have missed the finals.

Think in the WAFL the Eagles so far have only required two or three top up players, but if that figure gets to six or seven then things get tougher.

The crowd at Lathlain Park to see Perth run all over West Coast was about 4,000 - very good and a Demon's house!

Hey Riders that Claremont vs SD clash at Basso you mentioned earlier had a controversial finish if I am correct?
A Steve Malaxos shot on goal that was a clear point (barely snuck in for a point I might add) was incredibly given as a goal by the goal umpire who may have worn one for his trouble by a disgruntled SD fan if memory serves me right?
They were wild ol days back in the early 1980s.

Once again you're spot on VK! Was listening to that game on radio because EP game would've been finished, but in a high scoring close game with controversy the SD v Claremont game was still going and many people at the EP game were listening - such was the interest in all WAFL games especially as finals approaching.

Swans v Claremont - with star studded teams even caught my immagination and the commentators at the game were having a great time! A few arguments going on between them too. Yes she must have been wild at Bassendean that day.

When get the time will write down my memories as a 14/15 yr old of the 1978 WAFL season when an East Perth team came from an impossible position to first make the four, and then win the most unlikely of Premiership's as rank underdog's by under a kick, in one of the wettest days can recall in WAFL football before a crowd, still close to a full house, approaching 50,000.

VK can you recall the short "coaches comments" they use to have in the Saturday evening "Weekend News" paper in the green lift out footy section.

Always interesting to read, sometimes even a veiled shot at the umpires haha. Now it was either John Todd or Mal Brown but think Toddy who would 100% of the time say "no comment" week after week all season, then lo and behold after one game he actually said something more detailed ...."My wife told me to make a comment - we lost".

Haha think that's just classic. Never forgotten it. Was either Todd or Brown - can't imagine Browny shutting up for that long so leaning to JT!

On rare occasions one of the coaches in the "coaches comments" section would have a shot at the other coach or opposition player. Suburban Warfare at its best.

It was suburban warfare Riders and the overtly sanitised Vic biased/centric VFL (AFL) just doesnt even come close to holding my interest like the WAFL did as a kid in those days!

Much preferred the short coaches comments in the newspaper back then than the innocuous press conference's of today - know which was more interesting!

The questions fired at an injured Luke Hodge the other night - I mean seriously - but of course that's cutting edge material - where in actual fact - coaches press conference and the Luke Hodge interview - inane question after inane question - yep real cutting edge, most I know actually turn the sound down - that's how bad they are.
