In the way it is currently being run 300mil is overs in my opinion. And as we are such a well ran, community engaged industry (MASSIVE tongue in cheek) how are we goign to get any support over funding a Women's hospital????

Getting exactly what we deserve for decades of infighting among stakeholders.

$300M is a far cry from the $1BN that was talked about at one time. In fact if it was only to generate $300M I couldn't understand why it would be sold as an ongoing cash cow that is providing a steady stream of income for Govt and Industry alike.

It's like Perth Racing selling anything they can shift just to retire debt incurred by the incompetence of past administrations. Once it's gone, it's gone. You only have to look at the current situation of having sold the land, they still can't buy a round of drinks in real terms. Still got their hand out for cash every year and without RWWA supporting them, they would be destitute.

If Corporate's are allowed to buy the WA TAB for such a low price, it will simply be the funeral announcement for a date to be fixed.

Fair enough sell the tab if you really want to but money should go 100% to the industry not for the benefit of single mums who pop out 80 kids on everyone elses dime. This is typical labour govt bullshite sorry i dont want to derail the thread in a political sense but fair dinkum its the way it is

This is a popularist comment (“build more Hospitals”) by a typical Left Wing Govt, that must be challenged.
Either way, its an attempt at a Federal Election booster, or an impetus for Sale at a State level.

Any potential Sale must be carefully negotiated to ensure the best possible return to Industry.
Not an instantaneous 2/3rds giveaway and squabble over the rest, like Seagulls over chips.

I didn't take into account that Racing only gets 35% of the sale price !! $105M if they get the price they now think it's sale will bring.

Why bother ? What a debacle. If that's all they get, there will be a mass exodus from the Industry and property sales will have dozens of listings.

Why will there be a mass exodus?

Rightly or wrongly the industry doesn't own the TAB, so any funds from the sale is extra investment and is set aside for infrastructure spending.

the sale of the TAB isn't really the important issue IMO, the relevant issue is the agreement the industry gets from the purchaser which will fund the industry going forward. Remembering the purchaser will still have to pay the taxes to the state government.

the consumption tax will see 15% come back to the industry I think.

Think you jumping at shadows, but I agree the better the sale price the more for the industry for infrastructure spending. the important issue is the future funding arrangement going forward. Given the experience of Tassie and SA I think the negotiators should be well aware of potential short comings.

In relation to the last part of your comment, a few percentage points here and there could mean tens of millions of dollars in the purchase price of the asset. The govt wants the money, i dont trust them to protect the industry funding first and foremost, all they want is maximum value for sale price.

If anyone involved in the process had an awareness, they wouldn't be sitting at the table talking at all.

Regardless of whether you support the sale of the TAB, that train has left the station. it is rightly or wrongly a government asset, the decision to sell has been made.

those that are involved in negotiating a path forward will/ are negotiating a deal that supports funding of the industry. I am sure that the lessons of Tassie and SA are resonating.

Listened to a radio interview with him on it.
He admitted that although they had allocated the money, in theory, in this budget - any actual sale was wayyyyyyyyy off, and at this point nothing more than a pipe dream.

Would suggest the proposal was nothing more than timely to give Federal Labor a boost locally at election time.
Once election done it will be retracted, and will half of Shortens Trillions of $ of spending promises.

So there is no sale on the table, but a carefully worded promise about allocating funds when it is sold?

^^ It's true too that the punter's have never had so much "information" these day's...but bugger that, just tell me who that greyhound trainer is on!

Or as in that movie..."I'll have what she's having".

Tab Fixed Odds betting was never brought in for people "in the know", that's for sure.

Not so much with WA Tab - but can't work out why - let's say a big punter connected with stable or whatever keeps on winning - well then to the corporate taking his/her bet's why don't they just start backing his wagers themselves! Bet with him - are they not that confident ? Then stand the bet's.
  • DamienWyerDamienWyer    7,660 posts
It's almost the reverse thinking at the Casino. They love winning punters, as it a vindication that you actually can win if you are lucky enough. It is stunning to think that after educating players, turning them into punters, then victims, that betting agencies would risk turning them away when the very core of what they are promising is the chance to win big.
