Is bob good for Racing in WA? Firstly no issue with the bloke, congratulations to him for everything he has achieved, well done. But racing in Perth? Supports a couple of trainers, Most horses bred in the eastern states, so not supporting WA studs. When you front up to a pinjarra maiden, with your $10,000 yearling, but know  you cant win, because, your up against one of Bobs Blue Bloods, Stress congrats to bob as a business man, and horse owner breeder. But does it at the end of the day drive away owners and by default Trainers and breeders

I think the cerise and white bring intrigue to WA racing. If you take out Bob’s horses, there really isn’t that much talent and hype to WA racing in my opinion. We’ve seen recently how exciting it was to watch their army over East and how the state all got behind them.

I think the quality of horse flesh they possess is enough to out weigh the other aspects you mentioned, but definitely do see where your coming from

How do you improve a product by removing the best horses from it? Surely Bob is good for WA Racing as everyone is chasing him as hard as possible.

But are they chasing him? Or have many owners walked away because they cant compete

But would there be more talent in WA in racing here if you took bob out of the equition? I wonder how many eastern states trainers are thinking, How could i possibly travel to WA and beat him on his home track? So they wont come to our carnival?

Might be more talent here for about 3 races in 3 weeks, but over the rest season, there’s a lot more talent with Bob here

And then we take out the next biggest owner.

Stupid proposition. He is the biggest owner in the State. Do we always have to have a tall poppy syndrome.

There is plenty to go around. If some trainers don't make it then they move on.

If owners walk, so be it.

You fight a losing battle if you forever want to tale out the best.

Most owners are happy to win one race in town when they get into a horse I’d suggest and Bobs domination doesn’t stop that from being a possibility.  Obviously the dream is to win a big one but they know it’s unlikely going in.

I’d suggest the ones most disadvantaged would be the other “major” owners who are in it to win the big ones.  They are dwarfed by Bob and have inferior stock so they are up against it.  But these are the ones that have a bank and are trying to up their game like Impressive etc so overall I would say Bob is improving the overall standard here.

No problem with bob as an owner, he spends the money... but in my opinion he’s not exactly good for wa racing... he takes all the money and doesn’t spend anything to help our breeding industry.. when’s the last horse bob has bred with a wa stallion ? Or supported a wa stud?

    He breeds to the best.

If I had his coin i would be doing the same.

Look at the first four past the post in the Burgess Queen on Tuesday. Stallions - Snitzel, Written Tycoon, Dream Ahead & Toronado. Quality always rises to the top.

We have some good stallions here in WA but nothing compares to the el supremo's on the East coast.

Yeah agree, but the stake money he wins here isn’t exactly getting turned back over into wa racing... hence why over the past few years we have lost a handful of studs.. just my opinion

People like seeing good horses and some of the obes he has had are eccepional, but i think what gets peoples backs up,he never reinvests a single cent into WA totally ignores WA stallions.so he never gets a rousing reception, and what i hear you never get 2 nicer people than Grant and Alana Williams, abd i guess they only do what they sre told to do by him.

lot more to do with the mares he puts to those stallions than the stallions themselves.

He doesn’t win every race. What percentage of city/provincial prize money does he win - 15% I don’t know, but there is still plenty for everyone in my opinion.

Pity he never acknowledges or gives credit to Grant and Alana - never does.

This comes up every year around this time

It's Bob and Sandra Peters business and they run it to get the most out of it for their benefit. It's their money, their horses and they have picked their trainers and jockeys to get the best results. Isn't that running a good business?

It's like anyone on here, when spending their own money on something, whether it be horses, cars, houses, doesn't matter. You make the decision, you do what's best for you. With the budget you have. If you want the seemingly better option, go for it, it will cost you more.

What does Bob owe Perth racing or the local breeding industry exactly? His success is the culmination of 50 years in the sport?

He has built and fostered careers here and put WA racing on the map. Classic tall poppy talk here. People talk about "levelling the playing field" but it sounds more like Socialism to me.

I used to agree with this last statement, however, I'm sure the trainers and jockeys that Bob uses don't need public displays of affection. They get on with it and the acknowledgement comes in the form of trust with his valuable and superior animals. Nobody is holding a gun to their head to work for the man.

Why would Bob prop up the local industry to his own detriment? He is not interested in stallions and has said that often enough. He's got the pool of brilliant mares which hasn't happened overnight.
  • RodentRodent    7,024 posts
I'm assuming all the people who talk about propping up the local industry drive Holdens. Look how that's ended up. The W.A breeding industry should live or die on its merits. It shouldn't need Bob being charitable. It's not a sheltered workshop.

He went out an purchased a well bred youngster and was lucky enough to reap the rewards. A great racing story.

Presume Bob started with nothing, had a bit of luck and continually made  good decisions along the way.

Compare that to the Nathan Tinkler, or the West Coast racing syndicate approach , etc, etc.

Bob is great for racing. He is one of those benchmark figures that most would aspire to be.

I agree with the majority Bob is good for racing here and this new strategy of sending a team East went pretty bloody good too! Some of my most enjoyable wins of the carnival were in the cerise and white..wait until next year, with better luck they kick arse again but more.
And as H said, Team Williams I'm sure do greatly appreciate the privilege and benefits reaped from training Bob's horses..not too mention this year how much Grants profile has been enhanced being front and centre during numerous winning Interviews on the big stage.

he is good for wa racing as his horses put us on the map across australia but bad for wa racing owners who front up with a decent horse and constantly get rolled by an endless sea of his listed and group level runners in pinjarra maidens.

@paraletic Correct me if im wrong but it was local horses cutting at each other in the lead that set up Regal Power's Railway Stakes victory last year. For all the whinging, they're their own worst enemy.
