Ascot 4th February - Winners & Losers
Race 1
Why They Win - Kentoo
Trialled very quietly on two occasions for SJ Miller and comes from the same Pinjarra trial as short priced favourite You Am I when untouched down the straight. Miller and Tan combined for debut winner The Shoe in similar fashion earlier this year. He looks Magic Millions bound.
Why They Lose - My Demi
Returns to the track without a trial after a freshen-up. Looks to have ability but was given all the favours in both career runs to date. At the $4 mark, willing to make her the risk horse.
Race 2
Why They Win - Who's The Guru
Is looking to suck punters in yet again and he has done that with his emphatic and effortless trial victory. Went under at $1.80 almost a year ago after an impressive trial win and will go round short, but in another heinous metro maiden field which lacks both quality and depth he's the logical selection.
Why They Lose - Faulty
Even though the Steve Wolfe team are starting to fire again after a notable lean spell it looks as though Faulty is destined to win his maiden in the great southern rather than the metro area. Had two very genuine chances to win and couldn't get the job done.
Race 3
Why They Win - Royal Star
No shock and awe here, he looks a rising star of WA racing. Surely nobody is spruiking him as the best bet at $1.35 @tabformgenius but it is hard to knock his effortless wins to date.
Why They Lose - Veuve De Vega
Ran a nice race behind Wrinkly over 1500m but that was a genuine grind on a track which played a little funny. This is harder and further, he looks tested.
Race 4
Why They Win - Preselection
Sure to cause quite a stir with the continued engagement of Ellie Cockram but fingers crossed for the besieged hoop she can get the run of the race and put both her critics and rivals to the sword after a string of frustrating minor placings.
Why They Lose - Toppa Dawozza
Has only notched two victories from 43 career starts. Is a noted non winner and looks as though he will run another honest race without gracing the winners' enclosure. There are much easier midweek races for him.
Race 5
Why They Win - Salorsci
Ultra impressive win on debut at Bunbury. Statistics show that the vast majority of 1100m winners lead into the home corner, especially early in the day, however, the time and manner was sensational. Think he is an above average Saturday type.
Why They Lose - Gee Boss
Ran a super race over 1100m sitting outside iron filly Dainty Tess but the run certainly didn't scream 'I want further'. Banking on the opinions that she won't find the lead here and will find 1200m too far.
Race 6
Why They Win - Secret Minx
Her form has been impecable and gets the chance to show everyone how adept she can be taking a sit behind a hot tempo. Three Votes looks great on paper but those 1000m races can be deceptive. Down to 57kg the Minx train is an attractive eachway option.
Why They Lose - Red Paddy
Is in sensational form and while the hot tempo will suit the race maps that he will simply get too far back. Anticipate he will be more than 5 lengths off the leader at the 400 and doubt he is quite that sharp to reel them all in.
Race 7
Why They Win - Real Icon
Split talented pair Just Act Natural and Miss Sondrio in the Bunbury Sizzle and looks to have come back a treat for South West trained Michael Lane. After the claim for Aaron Mitchell he looks perfectly placed to win.
Why They Lose - Patrimonio
Extended his impecable first-up winning record but is drawn a fairly sticky gate. Not convinced he has the necessary gate speed to hold the back of likely leader Key To Fame. $4 looks unders.
Race 8
Why They Win - Baraki Beats
I don't see this as the 'speed battle' many are portraying it as. Gloryland must roll forwards and lead whereas Baraki Beats has shown in the past he is more than capable of sitting just off the speed. If Hill can get him out of the gates and position behind Gloryland he is a big chance of making it two in a row.
Why They Lose - Point
Looks to have probably reached his mark. No doubt he will win more races but this is a deep race with plenty of winning chances. He has been belted by Gloryland and Baraki Beats previously with Pike in the saddle and this race is even harder.
