Ascot Preview, 20th January

Terry Leighton | Metropolitan Racing | Fri 19 January, 2018

Race 1 - Johnny Nash

I can do form clearly now the rain has gone. I can see all eight winners in my way.

I'm hoping somebody gets that or I'll just look like a dickhead. Even more than usual at least.

The old $30,000 maiden to kick start the day and I'll be praying that a good friend and a very unlucky owner can break through for a long overdue success with Princess Zelda. He tends to ask me to 'keep his quiet' in the previews. Problem is, the reason I 'keep them quiet' is because they are no hope. Poor bugger. This Planet Five mare should be winning on Saturday. It is very hard to keep quiet her previous two outings where she finished behind very smart ones after having zero luck.

The one horse standing in her way is the William Pike ridden, Amaya. Her race form is pretty thin, but a recent trial victory over subsequent winner Irish Moshe, is just too much to ignore. She looked like a different horse. I'm going to stay out of this one as a betting race and cheer for the Princess. Dare say there might be a few frothies consumed by a certain owner if she gets the nod.

5 Princess Zelda
8 Amaya
9 Second Vita

Suggested Bet: No bet.

Race 2 - The Prince Of Perth

Adam Durrant is without doubt the Prince Of Perth. The self proclaimed 'party boy' has his own little Prince running around in this event and he is without doubt, the best stayer in this race. With all his princelike qualities, there still has to be some doubt in this Casino Prince gelding running out a strong 2100m second up, and for that reason at the $3 on offer I'll be willing to wait one more start.

Going to go a little bit left field, and hope that I can strike gold with none other than Luke himself. Luke's Gold has not been afforded any favours in his last three efforts and was basically removed from the race 600m out last start. There are definitely question marks on his ability to stay, but from barrier 1 in a race which looks devoid of a huge amount of top end speed, he could get the soft run on Woodsville or Couleur Bizarre's back. I'm happy having a little bit each way around the $15 mark.

A very open race.

5 Luke's Gold
4 Jackpot Prince
6 Couleur Bizarre

Suggested Bet: 20 wins and 20 places Luke's Gold (5).

Race 3 - Warwick Cappo

A nicely competitive event with many contrasting form lines coming together. The form-line which I cannot go past is Cappo D'Oro's. Big runs first and second up at unsuitable journey's before leading over the 1800m, seven days ago. Mollie Clark would not have wanted to be out in front at all on this Medaglia D'Oro gelding, but was forced to take up the role of pace maker. For a natural sit and sprinter he battled on gamely in a far superior form race. Is tasked with carrying the big weight here, but did that last campaign when rarely running a bad race. Should sit just off the speed and should be at full fitness. $8 looks a very nice each way price.

At The Ready, Rock Giselle, Prying Tom, Scooner and even Kia Ora Star are all winning chances. Another wide open affair.

1 Cappo D'Oro
7 Scooner
6 Prying Tom

Suggested Bet: 35 wins and 35 places Cappo D'Oro (1).

Race 4 - Price v Punt

I'm a little torn with my selection here. Hoodlum Thunder is my on top selection after racing without luck at his most recent outing (8s to 2.9 was a very painful firm to not get the choccies). My issue with this Brett Pope trained gelding is that he does seem to lack early speed though is better suited racing on top of the pace. From barrier 3 he may well get crossed by the likes of Retosona, Lucky Roar (blinkers have gone on after the last start victory) and one or two of the rougher conveyances in the race. May be hard for him to muster and win if he is three back the pegs with a 294m straight.

State Prosecutor is a rare Peters & Pike runner which has gone up well over my price. First up he went around in an inferior race at Bunbury where he didn't get warm til the final 150m. His previous two campaigns showed he is not a 1000-1200m horse and the $1.70 he went around at that day in retrospect looks worse than your grandmother naked. He is not one of Peters top liners, but is definitely capable and the $8.50 currently available is a price hard to ignore.

Paddy's Shadow rounds out the chances in this event. I won't suggest a bet, but will leave you with that famous conundrum - Price v Punt?

1 Hoodlum Thunder
5 State Prosecutor
3 Paddy's Shadow

Suggested Bet: No bet.

Race 5 - Time For Glory

I've probably lost my shit. This looks like Gloryland's race. Yes, it is $91 with most agencies. I consider this a good price for a horse who will be in front with 200m to go. Since Gloryland has left the stables of Neville Parnham (and has not been handled by Steven Parnham) it has gone from strength to strength. A Broome Cup win. Third in a Kalgoorlie Cup. This is good form. His last start he came up against the speedy Wrinkly and was forced to take a sit. He is not a sit horse as we all know. There is no other obvious pace here and I love the claim of Mollie Clark to get him in with only the 53kgs. Look, there is a large chance he might stop dead at the 200m mark, but if not and he salutes at a tick under the $100 mark, I will be taking Adam Durrant's 'Prince Of Perth' title.

Settler's Creek is a great price here too after having no luck at his most recent effort. Drawn to get the run of the race and I'll be suggesting him as an each way play too. Olivers Travels is flying, but if Gloryland is running them along, he may be forced into another gut buster from the tricky draw.

Lead us to Glory, Mollie.

5 Gloryland
1 Settlers Creek
6 Olivers Travels

Suggested Bet: 20 wins and 20 places Gloryland (5). 25 wins and 25 places Settlers Creek (1).

Race 6 - Tonight Is The Knight

I reckon a few punters in Perth might be having a 'night with a pro' after Gloryland's success, so the running multi @ $450/1 looks a good thing. A Knight Of Pro is a horse very much on the rise against a pretty mediocre bunch. Bombed the start and was then held up most of the straight, first up when only going down to the smart Illustrious Tycoon by 2.5 lengths. With a clean getaway this Proart gelding should sit in first four in running and be hard to beat from there. I do always worry when a horse bombs the start like he did that it will become a regular occurrence (I still have Baraki Beats nightmares), but we'll forgive him for one indiscretion.

Klondike Kenny is flying and will appreciate the top end speed. Don't think there is much point looking any further.

6 A Knight Of Pro
10 Klondike Kenny
9 Fraternize

Suggested Bet: 70 wins A Knight Of Pro (6).

Race 7 - Helter Celter

I don't really have a strong opinion on this race. Shackleton and Royal Missile are your two favourites and both give you serious reasons to lack confidence. Shackleton is a mile up in grade, while Royal Missile's trial didn't exactly thrill me. Cuanzo and Valderi Valdera are on the next two lines of betting, with one being a complete non-winner and the other having just won a Class 5 at Narrogin. Let's look a little bit further.

The Celt raced first up down the Pinjarra straight, when drawing the wrong side of the course and being effectively knocked over at the 250m. Forget he went round there, and the $31 on offer looks a ridiculous price. Vaughn had one midweek (High Calypso) which was 18s to 4s and saluted. This has a similar feel to it. Drawing the widest gate does look a negative on paper, but it does allow Maddison Brown to just let his Planet Five gelding have some room and attempt to motor to the front. It may not even be a horrible thing if he sits three wide on the speed.

Tenterden is the other who looks a nice price at the $11 mark. 2.3 lengths off Volkoff, followed by a straight race he was also bowled over in. That's where my money would be wasted.

1 The Celt
2 Tenterden
10 Royal Missile

Suggested Bet: 15 wins and 15 places The Celt (2).

Race 8 - Pikey Plz

Like many of the punters Australia wide, I will be looking to the man with the bald head, pointy nose and large wand to get me further in front in the last. My Grace absolutely hates Ascot and that is the only reason she is not $2 here. Should have won her last two outings when Maddison Brown was on board. I won't be commenting on these two rides. My mother once told me, if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all. I suppose if that was the case I wouldn't have a twitter account. Or write this weekly. Anyway, My Grace may be susceptible at the 1600m, but this is a shocking race and class should get her over the line. The fact she is the same price as Mass Effect who really struggles when he leaves the South West emphasises that fact.

Swift Platinum looks the main danger and should be able to dictate this from an inside gate. If the day is showing any signs of having a pace bias, I would probably look to save or even shift your investment to the Ross Price trained gelding. Sandalwood finally showed something closer to his earlier career form, but I want to see more.

$6 looks a big price for My Grace. In honour of William Pike's snozza, we'll plonk it straight on the nose.

4 My Grace
7 Swift Platinum
1 Russian River

Suggested Bet: 100 wins My Grace (4).

Very good humor in the preview Yes particularly tipping Gloryland to win let alone run a place. Hilarious. :)) :))Having said that I did comment on his humour last week before others got on board and I do encourage whoever it is to keep posting previews.

Bad day at the office for Nosk reprimanded for careless riding in the first then charged with improper a couple races later . Luckily Jerry said her horse contributed to the bumping in the first

If Gunnago was my horse and had been given anymore than 1kg for this four runs I'd be sooking. Horse is on it's level, especially progressing up in distance so far without result.

Depending on how they are feeling running second in a Saturday race with a $60k stakes can be as much as 3 points. And winning is either 3 or 4 or 5....once again depending on ......???

Push forward Chantelle. Pointless sitting where you did as you were always going to be forced wider. Made no difference to outcome but at least give it a chance
