Delicacy dominates South Australia

Perth Turf Talk | Metropolitan Racing | Sat 2 May, 2015

Delicacy showed she is capable of better things in the spring after trouncing her rivals in Saturday’s $400,000 Group I Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville.

The Grant Williams-trained daughter of Al Maher completed the WA Oaks / Derby double at her last start and her burst of acceleration in the home straight to made it five consecutive wins with ease.

Settled midfield in a moderately run race, the pace set by Fenway after Fontein Ruby was slowly away, Delicacy ($7) burst out of the pack out towards the centre of the track with 200m to go and accelerated past Fenway ($4.80) to score going away by 1 1/4-lengths with Bahamas ($21) a neck away third.

Fontein Ruby started the $3.80 favourite but was unable to dominate from the front as is her usual pattern after being slowly away, forced to race midfield along the inside to the home turn, beaten 6 1/2-lengths into 11th place.

The winner was a fortunate pick-up ride for Peter Hall after regular rider William Pike injured a shoulder in a barrier trial mishap on Tuesday.

Mannerism went on to win the 1992 Caulfield Cup as a four-year-old after winning the Australasian Oaks and Delicacy looks a likely type to be tried in Melbourne in the spring.

Raced by breeder Bob Peters and trained by Grant Williams, Delicacy has won nine of her 13 starts and earned $1,119,400.
