The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, 21st February

The Good

Doing the West Proud - A very nice lead up run for the Australian Guineas by Disposition, and Watermans Bay was a super 'trial' for the Newmarket.

Shiedel - Third straight belting of the opposition, adds to the large W.A stable of quality 3yo's, the best group of 3yo's we've had in a very long time.

She's A Virtue - When you ask the Punting Gods for a steed, you submit your ballot with the following boxes ticked - solid gate speed, the ability to settle in the run, a turn of foot, and the ability to find a bit more when challenged. The Punting Gods normally reply with a casual middle finger in the form of a heartless goat. This heartless goat teases you early with a hint of promise and has you thinking you might have something. It teases you just enough for the battle weary owners to give in and agree to front up the cash for another preparation. None of that business for these owners though, this tough sprinting mare just keeps doing the job, and doing it nicely.

Narrogin - I'd give the place a big tick, for a country circuit it's in pretty good shape. Facilities are fine, the track presented in really good order and getting $40 about the first winner ensured for an enjoyable day.

Apprentices - I'm used to them winning more than their usual share in the off season, but this isn't the off season....is it?

The Bad

Doth Protest Too Much - Nobody cares what the trainer's foreman's second cousin has to say about a protest...so don't have him in the stewards room. I'm pretty sure they ran out of chairs in there.

Almachino - Is shepherding legal in racing? Turns out it wasn't required as Right Honorable still would've won the way it kicked clear rounding the turn.

The Ugly

Race Two - Rive Gauche letting Friarpak cross to the lead from outside it???? Dragonlead drifting to over $5 on Betfair and then scratching at the gates??? Saxy Grace being many many lengths off them and never making a move??? Too many queries for mine.

On Saturday, I questioned the scratching of Dragonlead and the set up for Saxy Grace, surprised it did not be closer, but I actually missed the actual race. i thought exactly the same as you, had a good go after the scratching and was left scratching my hea...

i think she is "getting ready" for the up-coming country cups. she has only had 5 "easy" runs this campaign so should be cherry ripe for Pinjarra and Bunbury.

Saxy Grace ride was very very ugly, bordering on ridiculous! Only ever gets warm when the winner is past the post! Put in plenty of wallet munching rides this prep! Talking thru my kick but I was very pissed off, it's not rocket science - take off sooner!!!!!!...
