Why crowds are down

West Australian Racing
Went to Oakbank races today - been on my list for decades. $13 for a can of beer and food even more. Gone from a 30,000 crowd years ago to maybe 4,000. Joined as a Member (from WA) but won’t be going Monday - penalising those who make the effort.

I went in 1995 and it was great. Sad to see how few attend these days.

Oakbank had the jumps racing and obviously that was a massive attraction. I have posted many times that the biggest killer of racing in general has been technology, growing up as a kid in the 70s if I wanted to watch a race I needed to be on course, now I can walk down the street and watch it on a "TV screen" so small it fits in my shirt pocket

Thats a real shame. But for the club to break even, or to make a ounce of profit that $13 for that beer is legit.
Everything is up up up. Cost of the product (product plus tax), wages, power to keep that beer cold, insurance to insure the event, staff, patrons etc. Its becoming rather sad. Pretty soon that beer will be priced out of reach and those 4,000 people will say “fuck it, im staying home”.

Think it is an ongoing thing these days, and those prices, get back to basics, cut out on the other things,Dancers, and these other things,ok have a band at the end of a big day

$35 to go in - that’s fine for 5 hours of entertainment- but then don’t penalise those that make the effort to go there. Maybe 6 bookies doing little trade. Notice today, Monday, on TV the crowd was way way less than Saturday - mind you the weather was not good

$40 I was told to get in, I'm a member so irrelevant on a personal note
Food and grog should remain the usual price as it's already steep enough, and when you're paying $40 to get in you'd be a little light after entry fees

The idea is to entertain the crowd , not fleece them at every level.
No wonder we don't return visitors.
