Top 50 Western Australian Horses of All Time

West Australian Racing
PCPC    2,265 posts

G'day all

Ok this is where all of your knowledge is needed.

As we have seen in the last month or so, TVN posted their top 50 All time Australian Horses.

I thought I would make this a local affair and try and find WA's top 50 horses of all time. So who are they? We all know the big names etc but 50 spots need to be filled.

At this stage I ask for names, then when I get a good chunk of names I will put them into a list and let the forum decide the top 50.

So for now list your top 50 WA horses of all time. Also, we all know Northerly will be in the list, so if someone says "Northerly" that means we don't need "Northerly" in every post. As I said there 50 spots - not one.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions. This one is for the old timers as well - those that have been around a lot longer then me. I'm only 26 so I may struggle before 1987.

Thank you.

PC.

Also horses Vale Lock and Special Test. Never heard of them but I have asked this same question on another forum and someone mentioned these two horses so I thought I would mention them.

Off the top of my head Northerly, Ngawyni, Placid Ark, & Miss Andretti readily spring to mind.

Special Test was a very good stayer won Kalgoorlie Cup, Geelong Cup etc and numerous other feature staying events here in Perth, think Wally Hannah owned him, Sky Filou, Burgess Queen. What some of Albert Jordan's champions Maniana I know of from my gandfather talking about her but I'm sure of the older people on here could name quite a few others, Belinda's Star was a great sprinter of the 70's.

Sanatate WA's first winner of the Australian Derby and versatile enough to win a Railway Stakes first up he was a very good horse.

Well this is speculative. One of the best horses I ever saw was Amyquil but only raced about half a dozen times. Even won when it was nobbled. Not many can do that!
Stylish Lord I think holds the record for consecutive wins.
And how about a horse like Ayrville who won the WA Derby in 1911, whose career was cut short by injury yet went on to be a top sire?

Does Black Tom or Gunyo make it onto the list? Lets be realistic and say neither of them ran in the first 6 of the Melbourne Cup but they still made it into arguably the biggest race in Australia which is commendable in itself. Plus they each won a Perth cup along with the Kalgoorlie and Mornington cups respectably

Detonator ,a great pick up he was an outstanding horse who could also shoulder enormous weights. I wouldn't have thought Black Tom or Guyno rate a mention, the injury plagued Hard Act had lengths and lengths on Guyno, you have to consider the raltive poor quality and distinct lack of depth in those Cup fields.

Marjoleo was an outstanding sprinter/miler in the 70's, as someone mentioned earlier Meliador was a champion stayer who the current Melbourne cup winner and Caulfield cup winner in his Perth Cup back when the Perth cup used to attract the best going around at the time. Stylish Lord was a good horse but he was well placed I loved him but how much did he actually beat, I think you have to work on the quality of races they won and the quality of horseflesh they actually encountered.

Amyquil was a freak and I can reiterate the earlier story about him as I backed him the day he was nobbled and and he still won despite being hit with ace I wondered why he was drifting that day as he was a certainty and I just kept backing him and I bumped into a guy I knew only know only as Ace just prior to the race and he asked as he normally would what are you on ?
I never knew back then why he had that nickname.

I said I'm on Amyquil for plenty and he said it can't win you know, go have a saver on something I said the horse is a star in the making, he said trust me it can't win.
To make a long story short I thought he was off his rocker but I wondered why Amyquil didn't show its normal dazzling acceleration but was somehow still good enough to win.

Not many win I would suggest when they have a dose of acepromazine in their system as was discovered post race.

Old Fashion was a brilliant sprinter/miler who won just about every decent sprint race here including the railway, Hyperion, asian beau, RJ Peters Bunbury stakes, and the challenge, fairetha and belgravia as a 3yo and was placed numerous times in quality sprints.

Come to think of it fairetha would be another one from what I've read that would have to belong on that list.

fairetha, owned by uncle bob fernie.

trained by abo jordan, 2 perth cups ridden by johnny wilson.

    bob loved a bet!!

Was on course the day Detonator carried the Grandstand for Len and Tom Pike and beat a Stan Quinlivan horse Warsend for John McNair and Grant Wooten in the Easter Handicap. Was a monstrous run. He ran some remarkable races, very much a fan favorite as well.

Might not make the top 50 but will throw up Bumbelina won 7 on the trot (all by less than a length).

Good horse and an old favourite but agree that it's nowhere near the top 50.

I remember last year or the year before when someone or a few people rated Guyno and Black Tom a better horse then Rogan Josh lol. Surely this can't be right?
  • PCPC    2,265 posts

Rogan Josh deserves a mention, not sure how I left him off the list. WA's last great 2-miler. No other 2-miler has got not even close to Rogan Josh.

Just a few more thoughts. Would Rossamoss get a guernsey? Lorna's Nuisance (speaking through my pocket)? Fair Sir, dare I say it Rocket Racer??????

I would mount a fair case for Firelight as well  but again, that might be the wallet mumbling.
