IN THE PAST ....
There are more immediate missions for the chestnut Kid Choisir, who is being set for the $500,000 Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot on March 28.

A brilliant winner of his last two 400m trials prior to his stunning debut in the Listed Supremacy Stakes (1100m) at Ascot on February 28, Kid Choisir ran right up to the big opinion that Maynard has of him.

"His debut performance was right up there with that of Paklani and Send A Sign, two of my very best former two-year-olds who were completely dominant at the same age," Maynard said.

"I knew he was very good from day one but you never like to get too carried away with them until they produce it on the racetrack.

"I never like to race my two-year-olds too early, we've had him ticking along quietly for several months but have deliberately held him back until now with the Karrakatta Plate in mind.

"He cruises along doing evens and does everything so easily that we always knew he was good but it's exciting when you see him do what he did to them at his debut and he can only improve.

"His owner Les Andrews had been out of racing for a while but got back into the game recently and he bought this bloke for only $40,000 as a yearling in Sydney (2008 Inglis Classic Sale) last year," Maynard said.

Andrews, has been lucky enough to own the former outstanding WA galloper Stylish Lord (br g 1982, Classic Style (NZ-Lady Petite, by Billum), a Kalgoorlie Cup winner, who still holds the state record of 15 wins in succession on city and country racetracks. Andrews is a well-known country publican who has owned a number of iconic WA watering holes over the years.

All going well, Maynard plans to give Kid Choisir just one more run prior to the Karrakatta and if he performs as expected, then a flight east is on the cards.

HOOFNOTE: An interesting sidebar, which describes the fluky nature of racehorse ownership. Kid Choisir's mother, Friendly Seas has produced three others to race, all fillies - Arena Seas (2005 by Arena, Lechery (2004 by Tale Of The Cat) and Gentle Ripple (2003 by Arena). The three have raced 35 times, for no wins, with only Gentle Ripple (purchased for $1200 by Razor Back Stud at the 2007 Inglis Autumn Thoroughbred Sale for $1200) earning prizemoney ($1300) for a a second of five at Tumut in January 2008, and third placings at picnic meetings at Crookwell (April 2007), and Boorowa (April 2007). We'd never heard of Crookwool or Boorowa races either. Crookwell is 45 km north-west of Goulburn (NSW), and Boorowa is 80km further west, on the way to Young.
