Has anyone been brave enough to raise the question of how many horses have dropped dead in trials or races this year?

Surely an investigation is needed into why this is happening far too frequently......

Yes, some numbers for the ill informed?

careful bomber, i think your man has had more than the average hasn't he??? But i agree with the rest. A few numbers to help make a call might be good.

We have about 450 horse trial and race in Perth or the close surrounds a week from memory, so if in 6 months we had - i have no idea how many and am just using a number for the helll of it - 10 drop dead this year, that'd be a percentage of 0.008% of horses that are on a race track in the first 6 months.

But it'd be good to put real numbers in there..may be able to work it up to 0.009%

compare the above figures to the amount of elite athletes that drop dead every year... how many can you name?

maybe a basketballer in the USA and the odd race car driver....i think horses would be significantly higher but still not large enough to call for any type of action.

I think you got the decimal point in the wrong place - maybe Carey can help with calculation.

may have missed it by a dot...my apologies for being misleading...but at the end of the day all the figures i put up were just for an example.......but yes i did just check it and it should read 0.09%...

    One egg too many raco..
    ;)

Carey no longer helps me with anything!!!!!..since your kiss and make up episode you are now his special project, and he told me he had no extra time for anything due to how much time he spends on his "special project"...rather jealous to be honest

From the RWWA status report for the year ended 30th June 2012, 4011 horses had 24,469 starts. No idea how many died at the track but would suggest many more died in private training.

Sorry guys I dont have an accurate number for you....however I can recall at least 4 in the past racing year at trials, plus Ms Funovits at the races and I am sure there are others....This post is more to get people to think next time a horse drops, is there a common theme....

I understand it happens and it's a sad part of our industry, but 4 dropping at the trials in one season is much higher rate than normal and I as a horse lover and racing enthusiast am very concerned.....

We as an industry need to get much much tougher on what is being given/treated to horses....

Would give out the exact numbers if I had them, will investigate further.

Maybe the old blood treatment trick is back in vogue which was early in the week take some blood from the horse then treat the blood over a week then transfuse the blood back into the horse on the day before racing so maybe the ones that are dying are the ones with weak hearts they can't handle the extra litre or two.
