Wish they had more racing like this...one reason racing is dying is that there is just so much meaningless boring crap served up. No different tracks, places and types of races. Places like Toodyay, Beverley and York are actually what racing sorely needs to get people interested. I know that this day has passed and the boring accountants rule the world but still feel racing has lost its soul by trying to become just another slot machine.
Totally agree they need to embrace the differences otherwise you could centralise racing to a few tracks with all the best facilities like Hong Kong.

I know the class of racing is rubbish compared to Vic and NSW but is it worse then SA and Qld?

was in Qld last year and country Vic/NSW this year...and all of them at city were better than what we have..IMO. Vic and NSW country is as good or better than what we have in the city at the moment.

    SA??????

Yes it was a very good day went up to see my friends horse race Charlie's Joy it won really well Natasha at her first ride on the track rode him a treat 3/1 on course was much appreciated then had a dabble at Mc are could not believe the price he paid only because I helped prepare his mum as a yearling thought she was a really nice type and he looked just like her so made the day very enjoyable =D>

Can Racing get any weaker than this ?

..pretty poor form - given that they are trying pretty hard up there and a positive light in an otherwise dark month ...seems to me that they have done pretty well too with filed sizes and trainer/rider attendances -

..at least i reckon the committee would Not have bar you from plying your trade - if you took the time to go there.

I see where Jonesee mentioned York as a track where there should be more racing.

I haven't been to York, but in preparation for our visit to Perth next year, I noted that there was to be a meeting at York on a Friday. So we were looking forward not only to go to the races, but see the town. I had a look this morning after reading Jonesees post, just to see what date the York meeting was to be run in February, and it has been replaced with a meeting at Narrogin.

Anyone know why? Coz I won't be going there.

i would hope your joking..It is a picnic meeting..well supported by the whole industry, but you'd have to be a goose to suggest that you'd want the rest of WA racing to be at this level.

It is a great day out for everyone, and the town generally supports it every year.. I thought this year was some of the better race fields for a while.....but still not representative of the quality we want WA racing needs to be.

RIO - ya' read it wrong - the "pretty poor form" related to Damian W having a shot - all in favour of clubs doing what they do best at their level - heard it was a magic day ... and Sky looked like a great ride by cup winning jockey  and a couple of other youngsters.

oh good...not the first time..Sorry for the misinterpretation.

I still think Damo having a go at WA racing in general is on the money, however this meeting as a stand alone picnic meeting shouldn't have been included in that discussion..I think he also apologised for that and indicated it wasn't his intention.

I went to my first Toodyay meeing probably 40+ yrs ago as a kneee high. Over the past 10 yrs i've been about 4 times and every one of them has been a great day....I hope as time goes by they can do something similar at York..1 or 2 meetings a year at each track could be great

I remember reading recently that it was an issue with the track surface but would be happy to hear from anyone with more concrete information.
I love racing at York and its just a beautiful old racetrack.

that and the grandstand. Whilst a damaged grandstand doesn't sound like it could stop a race meeting, this particular one is heritage listed and has to be secured and fixed under different approvals to nomal buildings.

The grandstand has all the jocks, stewards and operational rooms for the race day participants.

Now that information is about 12 months old, and i haven't got an update from anyone in the know since. But i do know that my niece had her house de-roofed in the same storm 18 months ago and has only just(in the past couple of months i think) got the roof back on.

If her neighbour - who reads this site - knows anything about that let me konw if you dont want to post it yourself

Rio, good to see that things move so quickly in York. 12 months on, and don't forget the meeting was set down for February, so still another 4 months away. So in 16 months, they can't get their act together.

Anyway its their loss. My missus is a shopaholic and she would have bolstered the York economy no end.

For me, it's a win win, she doesn't spend money on shopping, and what she doesn't spend, I get to knock off on the punt

What a fantastic day it was at TOODYAY. The track was good, there were six bookies on course(two at Belmont the day before), good entertainment between races and after the last, and an ideal venue for the third or fourth tier horses to get a run and earn prize money which of course is very important for their owners. The vibe On course was typical of those country race meetings and IMHO, much more enjoyable than a normal non carnival city meeting. Loved every minute of it. Wouldn't it be good to see three or four meetings there during the winter season on Saturdays or Sundays over a two Month period. Water for the track is a problem. In the good old days when we used to race there every season the water was good. Now it's salty by all reports so really have to rely on rainfall through June to September. York coming along nicely too by all reports but need to stick to well promoted SUNDAY meetings only....

Agreed, I've never understood only using the Toodyay infrastructure once a year.

    Terrific post.
6 bookies after 2 on Satdy at Belmont was a surprise but given the way the punting world KNOWS Belmont it must be nice to field at a diffferent venue for a change.
