R1. Albany Signs Maiden - Perth Turf Talk
This is a tricky affair to open proceedings but we finally settled on erratic four-year-old (1) THE EXPRESS as our on-top selection. The son of Danehill Express has proven to be a handful when laying in badly at his past two outings but new rider Mitchell Pateman, fresh from a treble at Narrogin 26/01, increases his winning chances, as does the good barrier draw. (11) INFLAGRANTE has turned in two encouraging performances at Mt Barker in the past month and has to be considered the logical danger, while the ever-consistent (6) AQUA TORIO resumes from a long spell and is never far away at the finish of her races. (3) FASTLAP is a half-brother to Golden Slipper winner and star stallion Sebring and we will be watching his debut performance with interest.
1. THE EXPRESS - 11. INFLAGRANTE - 6. AQUA TORIO
SUGGESTED BET - 1. THE EXPRESS $25 x $25

The Steve Wolfe-trained three-year-olds (5) WAR KSAR and (6) SECRET ENDEMIC look like fighting this one out, and we are willing to give (5) WAR KSAR another chance after being rolled as an odds-on favourite first-up at Mt Barker 18/01. (5) WAR KSAR trialled brilliantly at Albany 8/01 and was placed at Ascot as a two-year-old, so he appears to have a significant class edge on his rivals. Should simply get the job done here. (6) SECRET ENDEMIC competed well first-up at Mt Barker 18/01 and did a good job to finish as close as he did, after losing a little momentum at the top of the straight. (2) DRUMFIRE raced well first-up for his new stable at Albany 8/01 and that was a good effort after racing outside the leader. The 21 days between runs is a positive and he could prove to be the blow-out, along with (1) PURIST who brings some handy inner-provincial form to the Great Southern
5. WAR KSAR - 6. SECRET ENDEMIC - 2. DRUMFIRE
SUGGESTED BET - 5. WAR KSAR $50
We were taken with the debut performance of (2) LIGHTNING POINT at Albany 8/01 when running on to finish fourth after being among the back-markers in running, and the step up to 1500 metres here should suit perfectly. 21 days between runs, a good barrier, and the booking of experienced rider Daniel Staeck all increase his winning chances. (5) AND SO AM I displayed what he is capable of second-up at Bunbury 15/01, when leading them up over 1400 metres and kicking on well in the straight to finish second. These two look standouts for the quinella. We?ve thrown (13) MISS CHILLY FILLY into the mix with her inside barrier draw and Jason Whiting on board. She will be fitter second-up and should appreciate competing in the Great Southern, and (7) YOU RING HIM has had a heap of chances but is capable of running on and finishing in the first four.
2. LIGHTNING POINT (NZ) - 5. AND SO AM I - 13. MISS CHILLY FILLY
SUGGESTED BET - 2. LIGHTNING POINT (NZ) $40
Trainer Paige Kenney has consistently started her horses in the Great Southern with considerable success and we think (9) ELSA'S GIRL can score an overdue win, and continue Takahide Ikenushi?s terrific recent form in the saddle. (9) ELSA'S GIRL doesn?t win all that often but she is race fit after three runs back from a spell and this looks a nice race for her at healthy each-way odds. (3) KOROLENKO looks ready to produce his best now after two runs back from a spell, and the winner of six races is well positioned in this grade. (2) HEZADOOZIE will no doubt be well fancied following his maiden win at Bunbury 18/01, but we think he may be under the odds and a risky proposition with 59kg against some seasoned opposition. (1) PARADOR will relish stepping up in distance and dropping in grade here, and shouldn?t be left out of your first fours.
9. ELSA'S GIRL - 3. KOROLENKO - 2. HEZADOOZIE
SUGGESTED BET - 9. ELSA'S GIRL $20 x $20
This is an interesting affair with (1) JETSON EXPRESS and (2) FATHOMS OF GOLD both returning to Great Southern racing after last-start failures, while also considering the merits of capable mare (4) CANNA LILY and the well-weighted Wolfe-trained duo (9) IHTS RIVETING and (11) PINS PERHAPS. After plenty of thought we eventually decided to give the free-wheeling (2) FATHOMS OF GOLD the benefit of the doubt and place him on top here. Put a line through his Ascot 17/01 performance and focus on his Albany win beforehand and he is a clear standout. (4) CANNA LILY scored a brave win in a similar assignment to this at Albany 8/01 and appeared to find the 1850 metres slightly beyond her at Mt Barker 18/01 last start. She looks well suited here. (1) JETSON EXPRESS found the going tough at Pinjarra 4/01 but this is a much more suitable assignment and he will be competitive, with the lightly-weighted (9) IHTS RIVETING next best after placing in a similar assignment to this here last start.
2. FATHOMS OF GOLD - 4. CANNA LILY - 1. JETSON EXPRESS
SUGGESTED BET - 2. FATHOMS OF GOLD $25 x $25
This race is wide open and the old-style open sprint is well and truly alive here with many winning chances and a 6.5kg spread of weights. After much deliberation (5) TALK OF ANGELS gets the nod, dropping in grade after finding her Mungrup Stud Sprint rivals a little too sharp at Mt Barker 18/01. Looks well placed here as the likely leader and she will give backers a good run for their money. (7) TORRIDALE was well fancied when resuming at Bunbury 15/01 but appeared in need of the run. Will strip fitter here and looks well suited down on 55kg. (3) TRICHOLOGIST was given an easy time of it at the Belmont 19/01 trials and look out for him to bounce back after a mystery failure at Ascot last start, and (1) DAINTREE ROAD is always a contender in these events but 60.5kg does hinder his winning chances. Good race.
5. TALK OF ANGELS - 7. TORRIDALE - 3. TRICHOLOGIST
SUGGESTED BET - 5. TALK OF ANGELS $20 x $20
Tough as nails filly (4) BINDAREE LADY ran into all sorts of trouble in this grade at Albany 8/01 and was almost a good thing beaten, flashing home late for second behind the flying Run Liam Run. In the fall out regular rider Kyra Yuill has been replaced by Daniel Staeck, who is competing in Albany for the first time in 12 months. (4) BINDAREE LADY is rock-hard fit and has to go on top ahead of progressive four-year-old (2) OUR ROYAL DEMON, who may be vulnerable racing for the first time in 63 days. Has an impressive turn of foot though, and look out for him steaming home late. (10) SECURE THE SKY has to be considered after her gutsy minor placing behind Run Liam Run and Quality Fair at Albany 19/12. She should lead and take running down, while (3) TEKAPO TANGO wasn?t far away in this company last start and has first four claims.
4. BINDAREE LADY - 2. OUR ROYAL DEMON - 10. SECURE THE SKY
SUGGESTED BET - 4. BINDAREE LADY $40
Punters looking to get out of jail in the last have the task ahead of them and during our initial assessment we came up with around seven winning chances, with (11) BILLESTRINI having the best formlines and coming out on top. The Roy Rogers-trained six-year-old has performed well above his rating with minor placings behind Countercat, Zipabout and Run Liam Run at his past three outings. (11) BILLESTRINI should work forward, race on speed and be able to hold his rivals at bay in the straight. (13) BLIZZARD EXPRESS has raced well all campaign and Daniel Staeck going on is definitely a positive riding change. Last start maiden winners (6) MANHATTAN CAT and (12) HUSSTOBEGOLD round out our first four picks, with awkward barrier draws meaning they will need a bit of extra luck in running.
11. BILLESTRINI - 13. BLIZZARD EXPRESS - 6. MANHATTAN CAT
SUGGESTED BET - 11. BILLESTRINI $20 x $20
The trial was much better than it looks on paper (rider drove it up the arse of another runner)
2) Purist
3) Miss Chilly Filly
4) Hezadoozie
5) Canna Lily
6) Corporate Larrikin
7) Bindaree Lady
8) Billestrini
