Star trial ahead of Coolmore Stakes

Local trainer Danny O?Brien was a satisfied man after watching his Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) contender hold his own against Hay List in a Flemington jump-out on Tuesday.

Star Witness finished second, within a length of arguably Australia?s best speedster in an 800-metre heat where the time recorded was 45.13 seconds with the final 400 metres clocked in 21.51 seconds.

?He seemed to be comfortable enough keeping up with him,? O?Brien said.

?There?s not many horses going better than Hay List and we sat on his tail without doing too much work and they ran pretty decent time so were confident with where he?s at and its full steam ahead for Saturday.?

O?Brien said he was not disappointed with Star Witness?s last performance when beaten four length into fourth place by the queen of Australia?s sprinting fraternity, Black Caviar, in the Group II Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield on October 9.

?He goes down the straight better than he does around a bend,? O?Brien said. ?He did win a Blue Diamond but he fumbled his way around the bend in that and he stumbled around the bend again that day [October 9].

?By the time he balanced up Black Caviar was well out of reach but he was very good the last furlong and has come through that super.

?I think his most impressive win was as a two-year-old here down the straight and with that in mind we?ve based his spring around the Coolmore.?

Star Witness is likely to be one of the favourites for the $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes and O?Brien?s stable rider James Winks will take the reins.

Saw its trial on TVN last night.
Very impressive. Should be suited by the straight six.
    Get on

It's certainly D-Day for Star Witness. Soul the only danger.

This horse is probably my all time favourite on the punt now. The odds were so rediculously high. I've followed him from maiden status to group 1. One must ask the question, where to now?
  • HenleyBrookHenleyBrook    408 posts
Off to stud now and will be standing at Widden Stud. His fee is unknown yet. Was one of my all time favourites on the punt 8)

Running tonight in England at Royal Ascot isn't he?

    Came 2nd!

Looks like his last "hoorah" will be this Saturday as Danny O'Brien was keen to start him if he performed well last night.

Whether or not he runs on Saturday he still might run in the July Cup as a final race.

Imo would be a much better move. Having not started for a while I would suspect he will take a few days to recover and the 5 days back-up may be too quick

Wouldn't think he'd be running in July Cup if he's going to stud this season.
Would want to be in the paddock asap

Exceed and Excel ran in the July Cup then went to stud.

I woudn't be sending a mare to him, that's due for an early cover (eg empty mare), if he did
  • BlakeBlake    8,176 posts
if say he stands for 20k if i had the money i would much rather go to his old man at 44.
  • TiversTivers    7,720 posts
Yep, but if getting an early one away was important to me, I wouldn't be risking $20k on a bull who's run a race and flown across the world in a matter of weeks
