Beau Heed went alright. With a better ride could have made the Melb Cup and who knows what he might have done.
Think Crying Game, his Perth Cup was outstanding, was the freakiest and with more patience could have been anything.

skywest - which horse was better? guyno or MAKYBE DIVA?
  • Skywest_AirlinesSkywest_Airlines    59 posts
Makybe Diva is better. However Guyno didn't get the oppptunities that Makybe Diva did.

Also this poll is about WA stayers not eastern states stayers.

    Gee, skywest....you've got it bad....
What do they call it when a guy falls in love with an equine gelding?? :?

I always knew there was something holding him back. next it will be the school he went to, the parents, fell in with a bad crew, slipped on a banana peel, walked under a ladder. I don't know how he got to the races at all at all. In all seriousness god bless you for fighting your corner. reminds of a certain scene in the holy grail "come back and fight ya bastards"

I'm just saying my opinion. I think Guyno is very underrated.
  • DarrahDarrah    2,933 posts
I had my say, I don't normally enter into these sort of debates all I'll say is "champions should be admired not compared." And thats not to say all the aforemontioned horses are/were champions

    :D

Notherly wasn't a pure stayer. He was more of a WFA horse who was able to run at 2400m.

Northerly won a Caulfied Cup(2400m) with 58kg, conceding 4.5kg to Fields Of Omagh. Rogan Josh ran fourth in the Caulfield Cup with 51.5kg receiving 5kg from winner Sky Heights. RJ then won the Cup with just 50kg before being smashed in the Sandown Classic at WFA. It's not about what races theses horses won, but the quality of the win and the quality of the opposition.

Semipro punter: Northerly still wasn't a pure stayer. The question is about stayers. Northerly doesnt fit that profile. Yes he won a Caulfield Cup with 58kg which was a very good effort but all of his other major wins were from a mile up to a mile-and-a-quarter. He was more of a WFA horse who ran up to 2400m.

    These are his major wins:

    2003 Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m WFA)

    2002 Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m WFA)

    2002 Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m hcp)

    2002 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m WFA)

    2001 Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m WFA)

    2001 Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m WFA)

    2001 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m WFA)

    2001 Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m WFA)

    2000 Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m hcp)

    2002 Group 2 Turnbull Stakes (2000m Set-Weights-With-Penalties)

2003 Group 2 St George Stakes (1800m WFA)

    2002 Group 2 Craiglee Stakes (1600m WFA)

2002 Group 2 St George Stakes (1800m WFA)

2001 Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m WFA)

    2001 Group 2 Carlyon Cup (1600m Set-Weights-With-Penalties)

    2001 Group 3 Peters Stakes (1500m hcp)

    No Listed Wins.

There are plenty of horses such Rogan Josh, Muros, Moss Kingdom or Meliador who were better stayers than Northerly - because they won beyond 2400m.

Had he been given less weight in that 2002 Melbourne Cup then he may have run, but the fact is he didnt - he didnt win beyond 2400m - and that doesnt qualify him to be a stayer.

I understand what you are saying though.

    Cheers,
    PC.

Onya Skywest, Guyno is a gutsy little horse, maybe he should have his own page?
  • Skywest_AirlinesSkywest_Airlines    59 posts
PC, I would have to agree with you in regards to Northerly.

Sprintcar, yeah Guyno is a gutsy horse with that bit of class. Maybe I should make a page on facebook haha. Would anyone join though? lol

Well if Northerly had run in the Cup carrying 56kg(6kg more than Rogan Josh and 2kg less than his CC win) he wins by how much? I'm saying Northerly's CC win is better than any other staying performance or performances(at least in recent times Guyno, Scenic Shot, Rogan Josh).

How much can I get on Northerly at level weights 3200 v Rogan Josh

Lahar and Zazabelle beaten a poofteenth, The Hind would've gone close if RJ didnt knock him over . . .

Northerly with 50kg in a Melb Cup . . . how far . . . (actually on second thought probably a neck knowing how he rolls  )

If a Caufield Cup doesnt qualify you as a 'stayers', then what is it for - sprinter milers?

They would need to run it like the Stawel gift with the fighting tiger off scratch and RJ getting a furlong head start.

    But he didn`t run.
    RJ EASY
  • PCPC    2,265 posts
So you think that Northerly would be able to run 3200m? The way he used to roll up front in his races - it would be a fair effort to win. The question is: Would Northerly be dour enough to run the trip.

Rogan Josh ran the trip - twice. for a 1st and a 2nd.

and as hitman as said, Northerly didn't run in the Melbourne Cup.

I honestly think that if they met at level weights at 3200m, Northerly wouldn't have it his way. It would be a lot closer.

    Rogan Josh for me.

    Cheers,
    PC.

Guyno would beat Northerly and Rogan Josh at 3200m. Quality and class equals........WIN
  • VorgtrafficVorgtraffic    1,755 posts
guyno has had two starts at 3200m for a combined beaten margin of 16.5 lengths
  • Skywest_AirlinesSkywest_Airlines    59 posts
Oh really? I didn't know that. Well as they say, out with the old and in with the new. The rejuvinated Guyno could run the trip I think.
  • VorgtrafficVorgtraffic    1,755 posts
Not to mention that one of the 8L beatings was at his last start...

and im assuming that Hay List is classy enough to win at 3200m as well??

mate honestly with all due respect, I admire you for liking Guyno and standing by him but he's had too attempts at 3200m and hasnt got anywhere.

He is simply not a 3200m horse.

    Cheers,
    PC.

PC, your probably right. I was being a little bit too keen and a bit blind sighted.

Its no secret that I really like Guyno, but at 3200m.............hmmmmm maybe not.

He would need to get a really really REALLY soft run to run out the 3200m and even then with 300m to go, would he have enough in the tank when the whips are cracking? Probably not.

You've changed your bloody tune, skywest....

Thanks Chris, yes I am new here. I feel a bit stupid saying that Guyno would beat RJ at 3200m, and I kept on saying it, over and over again. Just saw RJ's Melbourne Cup win (ive seen it more than once of course). Don't think Guyno would have enough in the tank to win. RJ was built for 3200m, not Guyno. Ah well.

I don't think its an insult to have Guyno in the list.

As for Aquanita, well he was more of a miler-middle distance horse. He won the Cox Plate, CF Orr Stakes, two Emirates Stakes, Futurity Stakes, Doomben 10,000, Turnbull Stakes, Underwood Stakes and Railway Stakes.

Aquanita was not a stayer. 3rd with 59kgs in a Melb Cup, yeah certainly no stayer

    Muros was a good stayer.

I notice Guyno figures prominently.I know its overall record, doesnt compete due to injury. But how many times did Guyno beat Lord's Ransom?
LR was in another class and would have been a group horse no doubt if stayed sound.
Just my opinion fellas.Sadly we'll never get to see how good he was. :(
