Some interesting inclusions and most of them I agree with. Love Lyon getting in, we have always chucked our spinners in the deepend whenever they have shown a bit early and the good ones have benefitted from that. This bloke has the potential to be very good from what i've seen, hope he gets the nod first Test. And Marsh in is great for WA cricket, i've long been a huge fan and he deserves his chance, just hope he gets a game ahead of the pretender Khawaja although I won't be holding my breath.

Test squad Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (capt), Michael Hussey, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Trent Copeland, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon, Michael Beer

I hope you were being sarcastic there?

Certainly am not. Couldn't make a run for Australia A against Zimbabwe this month when Warner, Finch and even your best mate Hughes all made centuries. Failed in the sheild final when again your mate Hughes made 220 for the match. Everyone got carried away with the guy making a 30, his record for NSW is pretty good but not amazing he needs to do a lot more before i'm convinced anyway.

Care to have a long term wager :?:
That Usman Khawaja plays 30 test matches before either Phil Hughes or Shaun Marsh?
So you get both Marsh and Hughes - who has played 10 already.
Since it will be a couple of years before the result, how about we have say $1k on it :?:

    Beer and Lyon OMG

No thanks Funkster, just happy to watch my predictions come true. Hughes will cement his spot in Sri Lanka, best place in world cricket to be an opener, coming in after 50 overs with the spinners on is another matter.

And Torp, have you ever seen Lyon bowl? If so how can you have a problem with his selection, he's the only spinner in Aus who genuinley gets wickets rather than waiting for the batsman to gift them one. Actually could put Crazy in that category but he goes for 6 an over in the process.

A pity they will all get compared to Warnie, who was a once in a generation.
I wonder if we could "recruit" one/some from the sub-continent on 457 visas as part of Australia's push for skilled immigrants? Just include a few questions on the application form about their spin bowling credentials... :P

Meets all the criteria I would have though
Skills not otherwise available locally ?

That squad doesn't instill a heap of confidence in the short or long term.

Hilditch said they are now looking to unearth new champions.

Can't see where they are going to come from on that list.

I too rate Khawaja, hopefully his game will improve with international experience.

Not a bad bet there Funky, surely Marsh or Hughes will have to get a good crack at it now, as one of them has to partner Watson, who could move to 3 once we finally find some openers.

I have doubts over Marsh's body holding up, and doubts over Hughes ability holding up at this point in time. But the primary reason i wouldn't take the bet is because I have doubts over the selection committee and won't be wagering on their whimsical nature.

Will be interesting to see how that bet scenario plays out.

Can't wait to see josh Hazelwood back on the park.

Although think he won't be back until next season due to injury.

Same issues as Ryan Harris from memory.

Hasn't Hazelwood suffered from stress fractures in his back, not a real good history going forward as a fast bowler.

Just needs to modify his action. DK Lillee had back problems early days and made the adjustments.
Generally associated with not having either a front-on or side-on action, but a bit of both.

Here u go Torp, here's our next spin king!
May have to wait a few years though... :(
Big effort to be playing 4th grade at 15, let alone 2's

Hughes out to a short ball WTF!

Did you see the dismissal? Was a brute of a ball, wasn't all that short this wicket is shocking. We may have missed a trick playing only 1 spinner but saying that the quicks should get reverse swing and balls like the one Hughes got should continue. 273 looks a good score regardless

Yep, Hughes got a good nut. 270 not a bad score by the looks of it. But do we have the bowling attack to win this game, looking at it I wouldn't have thought so, the debutants will have to bowl well. Harris over Bollinger is a strange one, perhaps he will be suited on these pitches.

Another good innings by Mr Cricket.

    Cricinfo website this morning:

Here's James on Beer: "I have long suspected Beer's selection was due to a misunderstanding at a selection meeting attended by Merv Hughes and David Boon. "How about Beer?", asked Andrew Hilditch. Boon and Hughes "Great idea, mate"

    Did he have to play?
Was a standard let go ball short outside off stump that he played a defensive shot to when he could have just shouldered arms.
No point in playing a shot if you don't have to or aren't trying to score.
Just a typical crab shot by a crab of a player!
Katich would have left it

LOL at BBC - "Lankans have Aussies on ropes"
  • PrecisionPrecision    295 posts
Always thought 273 was a decent total, Aussies would have to do something awfully bad to lose this from here. Batting on this on Saturday will be near on impossible

Jason: "Australia have searched their country far and wide to find a spinner exactly like Nathan Hauritz."

Jimmy: "In fairness Jason, they previously searched for one that looked like Shane Warne and came up with Steve Smith."

(and Lyon duely gets a pole)
