Also in the UK overnight, trainer Richard Hannon confirmed 5-time Gr1-winning Irish-bred 4YO entire Canford Cliffs (Tagula-Mrs Marsh, by Marju) ?has been retired to stud on veterinary advice after suffering a near-fore pastern injury when chasing home Frankel in last week's Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood? reported racingpost.com. Canford Cliffs (who had won 5 successive Gr1 races before last week's defeat) ?will stand next year at Coolmore, his owner Robin Heffer having sold a half-share to Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith at the end of last year?. Hannon declared: ?Canford Cliffs was a very rare type in that he had such great early speed as a 2YO, but also stretched out to be a superb miler as a 3YO & 4YO. He is without doubt the best horse I have had in over 40 years as a trainer. It?s bitterly disappointing for his owners & for everyone here in East Everleigh that he had to be retired due to injury, but at least it does explain why he hung so badly at Goodwood. We were very much looking forward to taking on Frankel again.? Canford Cliffs was a ?46,000 (A$62,000) weanling at the 2007 Goffs November Sale & later a ?50,000 (A$75,000) yearling at the 2008 Doncaster August Sale. Overall Canford Cliffs reties with 7 wins (including June?s Gr1 Queen Anne Stakes over 8 furlongs at Royal Ascot & May?s Gr1 Lockinge Stakes over 8 furlongs at Newbury, plus 2010's Gr1 Sussex Stakes over 8 furlongs at Goodwood, Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes over 8 furlongs at Royal Ascot & Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas over 8 furlongs at The Curragh, as well as 2009's UK Gr2 Coventry Stakes over 6 furlongs at Royal Ascot) & 4 placings (including his final start in the Gr1 Sussex Stakes over 8 furlongs at Goodwood, plus 2010's UK Gr1 2000 Guineas over 8 furlongs at Newmarket & Gr3 Greenham Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newbury, as well as 2009's French Gr1 Prix Morny over 1200m at Deauville) from 11 starts for ?951,724 (A$1.428m) earnings. any horse who trys to match it with him - will find itself doing an injury
shame for CANFORD CLIFFS but no doubt a warning to others

Frankels 3yo year has proven to be the strongest in many many years - a lot of the horses it has smashed have gone on to beat older horses in Group races including Nathaniel
Personally, middle distance and staying races in the UK are a joke. They crawl out of the gates and I agree with Damien Wyer with his comments. As a subsequence, So You Think got beaten by stupid team riding tactics. The feature sprints in the UK however are amazing to watch and are very credible.
You look at the Kentucky Derby and the spring middle distance and staying features in australia...they are run at such a hot clip that the toughest and fittest of horses are the only ones competitive. Mahler is the last english import i know of which could handle the staying pace in australia in the melbourne cup.

strange how the injury wasnt announced within the days after the race but then later when they decided he has to be retired he has all of a sudden had an injury which excuses his defeat

He added: "Canford Cliffs is too great a horse to take chances with, and I would hate anything even more serious to go wrong, so we have taken the decision to stop before the problems exacerbate.

The funniest thing is Canford Cliffs isn't actually injured. The X-Ray showed a shadow which in turn could turn out to be nothing its just its a risk they don't want to take. RH said before the Sussex that CC was bouncing and primed. He was just beaten...
