Dont own any outright these days. Going to Husson Lightning again and have a smidge in a Due Sasso due this season.
  • Saxon for me. Proven and cheap with terrific payment terms.

95 live foals in that first crop, from that came 7 individual winners. Assuming that only 50% of his foals reach the track at least once, that means in the next two seasons, to achieve the modest winners to runners ratio of 50%, Saxon needs to have another 16 individual winners from that crop by the time they are 5yo's. There are a further 83 live foals following in his second crop, of these applying the same ratio's, he needs to sire 20 winners again from these live foals. So in short, he needs to sire considerable winners, somewhere in the order of at least one every 3 weeks, for the next three years just to achieve modest numbers, based on the fact that he has seen high numbers of mares by WA standards in his first few seasons at Stud.

So whilst I think he has been a good success at Stud so far for his owners, unless he continues to consistently throw winners, it goes uphill rather quickly.

Further to the above, Saxon's numbers dropped away considerably in his third and fourth seasons at Stud. With 49 live foals in his third crop, and only 47 mares covered in his fourth year. With his success of his first racing crop I hope that his numbers bounce back, as I think he is better than that.

At his current fee of $4400, he is far better value than some of the higher priced stallions in the WA marketplace.

His current fee is $5500, and looks like getting 100 plus mares. Very few stallions have higher than 50% runners to winners, especially once they decent numbers running around. From the 2010/11 Sires Stats (Bloodhound), in the top 90 stallions only 7 have better than50%
    Lonhro
    High Chapparral
    Street Cry
    Fastnet Rock
    Helenus
    Pins
    Danetime
Apart from Helenus they all stand at much higher service fees than Saxon

You can probably trim that list by 1. Could b a bit hard to get a booking to Danetime...

Saxon did recieve the best mares from the heytsbury paddock and they ran accordingly. I'm not convinced by him.

Saxon also got a lot of ordinary mares too. His last winner of the season is out of a mare that couldn't run ouit of sight on a dark night and her first three foals were even slower, then Gracetown wins second up on a saturaday
Took a mare to Heytesbury today, Saxon has 140 mares booked in and 30 odd on a waiting list.

If he could crack 150 it would be an outstanding result.

Would expect he and Blackfriars the only two getting anywhere near those numbers here this year ?

Obviously Saxon is much better value than the new stallions that have arrived this year. In this economic climate many are way way too expensive as unproven sires.

We need more success stories and the more stallions that can step up and perform the better it will be for everyone.
It will create a more vibrant industry and increase competitiveness in the market.
There is a real tightening in the breeding numbers this year as people are really assessing the viability of their mares.

Commercial realities are kicking in and I believe that many people are concerned with our economic situation and the potential to make a profit on their investment in the short term.

To maintain business share studs must stand stallions of quality and in turn look to attract mares of quality.

Planet Five has over 60 booked to date which at this stage of the year is a pass mark and if we got to 80 (He is capped at 80) we would be ecstatic. He is getting some real quality mares which can do his prospects no harm.

All up it will be an interesting season and no doubt a very interesting sale next year.

Good luck with all your matings.

Silly thing is - if you've got the balls, and the money, you would actually be better off breeding this year as when the sales come around for these foals there is obviously going to be a shortage of horses.

Same with all financial things though and peoples sheep mentality - house prices going down - sell your house (or not buy), shares crashing - of sh!t, I'd better dump all mine.

All the wealthiest people become so by having the balls to do the opposite to the herd - buy when everyone else is selling, and vice versa.
  • Yes Tivers, correct. I only have the one mare going to stud this year. By Statue of Liberty o/o a Blevic mare. She has gone to Saxon. Its a good deal, but I wanted to also cross Sadler's Wells in the pedigree via Saxons Dam.

I am not breeding this year as I am giving my fillies one more prep before stud. but next year i'll be going to Planet five, Kendel Star and Heritage.

Chester, will Planet five be standing at Touchstone next year?
  • ChesterChester    76 posts
Planet Five is here for good.

He is majority owned by the two major shareholders in Touchstone along with a couple of breeders in the South West.

Vital Equine is here for another four years at least and Flying Pegasus is well entrenched.

I see Vital Equine's progeny doing well overseas.
  • ChesterChester    76 posts
Vital Equine is going very well.He had a very small book in his only Northern Hemisphere crop and from 12 starters has had 5 individual winners (Last Bid has 3 wins and 3 placings with one stakes placing from eight starts) and 5 additional placegetters.
His 2 year olds are flying.

Vital Equine was a high quality racehorse and raced and beat many top liners.
Have a look at his video

Anyone that has had success with Danetime should consider him very seriously.

    Thanks for your feedback Chester.

Is there any updates on Vital Equines pedigree page as per what his mother has produced since the brochure was published and which progeny are performing overseas?

A couple of years ago I wrote on this site that we had too many Stallions standing in WA, and that the list could be cut. Well it looks like that may be happening purely based on commercial reality, as this year we have the lowest total number standing in the last 10 years.

From 2002 to this year, total numbers were, 104, 102, 97, 103, 88, 91, 95, 101, 89, and this year 83. I will make the presumption that this year will see the lowest gross total of mares served also for the last 10 years. If not it will be close to the lowest.
  • I don't think it took much to work that out mate. 4years ago you predicted a further property boom in WA. Recently you stated that Cadel couldn't win the tour.

Glad to be proven wrong by Cadel. But I have personally contacted him and congratulated him on his amazing success and continuing to put Australian Cycling on a world stage.

Can't recall predicting a property boom, but my memory may be fading with the little importance I attach to predictions, and I may have been poorly informed due to my lack of experience. You are better placed to advise on all things property.

Some may be aware that I am currently in Northern Ireland, and circumstances have allowed me at short notice to travel down to the Republic and visit Coolmore in Tipperary. I feel privileged by the way in which the staff there are extending this courtesy to me, and many thanks must go to Irish Trainer, Pat Flynn for fast tracking my tour. All things being equal, I will be seeing Montjeu, Galileo, Danehill Dancer, Holy Roman Emperor (of particular interest as a colt purchased for a client is by him), Hurricane Run, and the great stayer Yeats.

Saturday I will be coming back up to The National Stud, and in the afternoon The Curragh for some black type racing.

Might take a couple of photo's if the weather is good.

I was at TINational Stud in June. The whole place is amazing but looking and feeling a little like a ghost town. They are at about an 8th.of their mare holding capacity as breeding in Ireland has followed their economy.Could be some "good deals" to be had by purchasing an Irish stallion....just need one that hates wet tracks.
