WA Sires Produce 2YO 1400M

West Australian Racing

Something that bugs me is the name of this race. This is no longer a race for the produce of WA Stallions. If it is going to be called this, then make it restricted to Stallions standing in WA having 2YO runners, otherwise it is just a 1400M race that has Group status that happens to follow two weeks after the Karrakatta Plate.

For example:

2011 3 out of the 9 were WA Stallions

2010 8 out of the 12

2009 8 out of the 17

2008 8 out of the 14

2007 7 out of the 8 !!!

All comments welcome, and yes I am biased.

    I understand your points, Damien.
But isn't there a Sires produce in other states...I know there is one in NSW.
Is that restricted to NSW based sires? I don't know.
I think times have changed since it was named "Sires Produce".
How would you deem shuttle stallions?

Sorry but I have to disagree completely, the last thing we need to do is to lose more racing history and tradition by changing yet another traditional name of a time honoured feature event, every time you do that you reduce the significance of the event in question.

I am actually saying that the conditions of entry should be changed to reflect the actual title of the race, not the name of the race. I should have made that clearer.

Shuttle Stallions are WA based for their time here. I counted Verglas amongst those numbers when he had a runner.

I tend to agree with l_e on this topic...sorry.

If you change the conditions then you'll lose the the "group" status. Owners and breeders wouldn't want that.

if you restrict races to home bred horses then all you are doing is acknowledging that they are so weak they need protecting.

it's a small small world these days for better or worse, you have to be a part of it or perish.

no way it could have black type status either, same as all those trillion dollar races for babies can't have black type status.

How many of the WA breds ran top 4 ? (ie goes on their pedigree)

The AJC Sires Produce used to be restricted to the progeny of stallions nominated by the breeders if I remember correctly. I think breeders had to pay a fee to have their stallions' progeny eligible for the race regardless of where they were domiciled. I'm not sure if the rule still applies.

    Is all in the interpretation.
It is WA's version of the Sires Produce Stakes. Ours is WA becuase unlike other states we only have the one metro race club so don't need to specify like VRC or AJC.

Was before I was an owner but weren't the old Sunspeed races restricted to progeny of nominated stallions?
  • Everything changed many years ago - the US breeders cup hasn't been restricted for quite awhile now

What crap. Blackfriars is as good as any Stallion standing on the East Coast. WA Staliions don't need protection, they need the support of fickle WA broodmare owners who think that everything that glitters is in the Hunter Valley.

If you want to talk about status of races, how is it that the status of a race can be swapped with a lessor rated race all because the host club is throwing some money at it ?

why don't you read it again, and then i'll gladly accept your apologies!!
i did NOT say they had no stallions as such, i said that IF they closed it to competetion from other states it would be tantamount to saying that.
and it's certainly NOT crap that if it was restricted to home breds that it would not have black type status(not that that matters a stuff unless you are a breeder).

your last sentence certainly shows them up for what they are, but in MY opinion neither race is worthy of being above G3 status.......now you can call that crap if you like and i wll cop it like a man!!!
