But some Studmasters must be really worrying now. At $6,600 service fee, Scandal Keeper hits right between the eyes of a lot of poorly priced Stallions in WA, and with 150 booked into him numbers for some of the others are going to be quite ordinary. For those unaware, an increase of 110 mares represents 10% or thereabouts, of the WA market in breeding market in terms of overall numbers covered.
A far easier option them becomes that the host stallions stud take on the mare about 4 weeks out from the covering and have all of the preliminary work done prior to the cover, possible a second cover to be sure the next day, and then monitor the mare over the next 30-45 days and she can come home in foal.
This is the option most clients of Yarradale prefer to take according to staff I spoke with this morning. Thus they can very quickly reach capacity on the property with stocking rates per acre even though the Stallion could cover another 50 mares or so in that season.
The Stallions standing in the Hunter Valley cover so many as they have the benefit of commercial operations that don't stand stallions and look after mares and foals and van serve to a number of Stallions if they are centrally located. But even with these many mare owners permanently leave their mares with that operation and it allows them to make varying choices over the years. In WA a lot of our Stallions are spread over distances as much as 500km, so van serving is very difficult here as a rule that fits all.

Something not right with that last post
Sure, SK has only 7 to run for 6 winners (87.5%) but it is worthy to note that he only served low grade mares. The average earnings is $76,440 per runner with an amazing AEI of 5.02 and his oldest are only just turned 4. There was only a handful of yearlings available to buy this year and those that sold averaged north of $90,000. Not bad off a service fee of $4,000.
The word is that he has 150 mares booked and some 30 wait listed for this season. Speaking with Yarradale they will look at package deals if mare owners utilize the services of War Chant this season - you will be guaranteed a slot with SK next season at this year's price. War Chant has a bit over 60 locked in this season so far. They are capping WC at 100 this season. War Chant has now achieved 30 stakes winners (7.3%) with the average winnings per runner some $88,000. To put that into perspective, Blackfriars is the leading WA sire. He has 22 stakes winners (6.2%) with average winnings per runner of $51,000.
Ron deserves the success he is now getting from his breeding initiatives.
I like what he has done, but I don't think he is a shuttle Stallion at this point. Afterall his winners have been one horse in Melbourne and the rest here in WA. He does have a 'full' book but you can still get in if you have a late service date, say November, as his early part of the season is chock full.
War Chant for $22,000 is overpriced, irrespective of how many stakes winners he has produced in the US. In the US he stands for $12,000 and I am sure they deal downwards from there. As a comparison to Blackfriars, I would say that Blackfriars has proven locally that he can get stakes winners sometimes from questionable mares. But I'm sure War Chant will enjoy success here in some form or another.
I agree it is great that Ron Sayers is having success with his Stud, he has invested a fortune into it and it is good for the Industry that he succeeds.
Certainly the excellent start is continuing. It will be
interesting to see how this season pans out for him.
I was under the impression that a lot of WA Breeders had loaded their horses onto floats for the trip to the Hunter or Victoria. But according to sources over there, that is not the case. With Stallion numbers here struggling outside of the top three, I think by the time we get to February 2013, it will become clear that Breeders in WA didn't bother this year.
Spudley, I don't know how you make your Stallion choices, be it commercial or to race, but I would be happy to make a few suggestions if you wanted a second opinion for no cost to you. If you want, just send me your mare's registered name and I will come back to you later in the day with some suggestions.
Damien a lot us breeders don't want to send our mares to the east as the costs are huge ( ie agistment,floating etc ) plus I would prefer to support WA stallions but the way their fees keep going up it is making my choices a bit harder . I only breed to race as I don't believe in yearling sales the horses are pushed too early too soon they all need time to mature at their own pace, plus stud's do anything to get the horse to the sales no matter what and having worked previously on stud's I have some idea.
As with my mare's I currently own 2 they are Richman's World and Libellous both in foal to THEROCK so as he is now back in Victoria trying to find a stallion at a fair price is getting harder but if you think you can help me any advice would be appreciated

Richman’s World being a Last Tycoon mare, is best
served by going to a Danehill line stallion, where that cross has resulted in
28 SW to date and the success rate is 2.5 times expected.. Of those 2 are from
Redoute’s Choice. The only other significant result comes from Halo.
So in order of value for money and keeping costs
reasonable to breed to race, I would suggest going to a grandson of Danehill.
As you seem to have a relationship with Sue Goodwin based on your previous
stallion choices, it seems easy enough to suggest Famous Roman. You should also
consider Vital Equine at Touchstone.
Libellous from a Zabeel line, is best suited going
to a Danzig line as that has produced 50 SW to date at 2.3 times the expected
rate. Black Tom at Rivercrest is a Danzig. Northern Dancer of course figures
prominently, but you said in your previous posting that you thought Scandal
Keeper was too expensive, but he would have been a strong choice. Finally your
mare lines up well with Danehill stallions with 37 SW at a rate of 2.79 times
the expected. With your budget in mind I would again recommend Famous Roman and
Vital Equine.
There you go, the absolute most bang for your buck I
can come up with. Needless to say that if you had a higher service fee budget I
would have gone with Blackfriars and War Chant to keep options open for resale.
