Thoroughbred – Investigation Regarding Pre-race comments concerning Race 4 Ascot 27 April 2013

First time ive ever seen anything like this?

RWWA Stewards advise that an investigation has been conducted in relation to identifying the source of pre-race comments emanating from the on-course betting ring concerning the running of Race 4 at Ascot on 27 April 2013.

The pre-race speculation failed to materialise and the race was run in accordance with the Stewards assessment of form and speed maps with no unusual wagering activity with respect to THE LITIGATOR or any other horse.

On Monday 29 April 2013, RWWA Principal Investigator, Mr Phil O’Reilly conducted an interview with Bookmakers Clerk, Mr Craig Holmes. Mr Holmes acknowledged being the origin of the speculation as it was his opinion that the integrity of the race was compromised with THE LITIGATOR to be afforded a soft-lead and supported accordingly.

Mr Holmes acknowledged that his assessment proved to be flawed and that he had shared his views with others who in turn circulated opinion as fact. He further accepted that he had ‘got it wrong’ due to a incorrect assumption being drawn after noting that THE LITIGATOR attracted support after initial markets were released from $5.50, with bets also taken at $5.00, $4,80 and $4.60. His opinion on the race was drawn from his own personal race form analysis and belief that THE LITIGATOR could not win and accordingly he was surprised at the betting on Friday.

The pre-race views of Mr Holmes did not have any basis in fact and lacked any credibility as was demonstrated by the eventual outcome of the race.
Mr Holmes was reminded that whilst the Stewards welcomed any information with respect to concerns in racing, actions such as his have the potential to bring the industry into disrepute and accordingly may lead to action by the Stewards were they to reoccur.

Is racecourse speculation really worthy of a stewards inquiry? stewards are going to be very busy chasingup leads like these

Certainly putting a lot of time, effort and money in to it in Sydney.............

Happened to hear the "talk to the stewards" yesterday between Wes and Brad Lewis and this was brought up. Evidently there is strong rumour and inuendo flying around re betting and this particular case was highlighted. Even Wes said he backed off in his punting because of these unfounded whispers, which i can see, even as a non punter is going to affect the industry.
And Jim Taylor this morning saying the stewards are having a hard time of it at the moment......social media does'nt help.

Will there be a media release for the The Litigator win 10/4 given it was 10 into 4.4 in the last few minutes on betfair, leads and wins despite never leading previously and no announcement made.

It's clear that RWWA and now the trainers are on a media campaign to try and quell the rumours but it's hard to quell the rumours when these races keep popping up. Obviously the stewards are finding it hard to pin anything on anybody and don't those involved know it. My records show suspect races occuring now for 10 months. Instead of picking on bookmaker clerks and running a media campaign trying to deny everything the Stewards should do something. If their powers are not enough to bring those involved down then perhaps they need to get those with more power involved.

The trots died a long time ago. We are letting are great industry go down the same path.

And finally I'd like to comment on that fact that I am 'social media expert' so must not know what I am talking about. I am a semi professional punter turning over my weekly wage up to 20 times a week on WA Racing. When you do this you have to know what you are talking about and I'm sure there are similar 'social media experts' out there like me.

Great post Thumper. I am just now back from a month away and catching up on racing. The Paul Jordan outburst and now this staggering ''investigation'' seem very very hard to fathom.

I would think a lack of action from the stewards has far more potential to bring the industry into disrepute than any conversation between 2 or 3 people.

Re reading this thread I reckon this is the best point made...priorities?

Hardly a ringing endorsement , stewards pointing out one of Perth races appears not to be rigged!!!
