Smoko, potentially WA's best sprinter since Barakey & Haylist.

A big call I know but this bloke might be even better potentially than Barakey and has been every bit as impressive as Haylist at the same stage of their respective careers.

Did it at both ends of the race yesterday at just his third race start and at his first test over 1200m, what he did yesterday and the ease with which he did it was pretty special.

Runs time, does it very easily and seemingly has gears .

He showed blistering speed to cross with relative ease from the outside barrier and in doing so crossed Lena's Fury (even though it was first up for a long time, it's a dead set flying machine) and everything that was vying for the lead with it early dropped right out including She's Quality, which isn't exactly a slouch either and ran 1.29 seconds faster 1.10.65 (throttled right down) than what Tax A Million ran in winning the last 1.11.94

Smoko was being chased by handy horses in Celebrity Miss and Virtual Trader neither of them are stars but they 're both at least Saturday class horses and he made them look like bush maidens, lets hope he remains sound and will be around for some time as he's the most exciting horse going around currently in Perth by a furlong.

I'm sure Carey could confirm whether those times are accurate or not but they wouldn't be that far out.

Didn't Carey say he was a future G1 winner after his debut run? So Andrew, as for your big call, if he goes on to be every bit as good as you say, I'll give credit to........................................................Carey :D

No problem I was putting that qualification there for the people who want to rubbish me purely for having an opinion, in reality I don't think it's a big call at all, I think it's stating the blindingly obvious and has been since its debut.

the time for the race on 22/06 was actually about 57.42 not the official 57.84

    the other 2 were correct.
  • AndrewCarterAndrewCarter    2,171 posts
Thanks carey, is that a computerised digital program you have that gives you those times?
  • [DeletedUser][DeletedUser]    0 posts
It was 57.54  but hey whos counting seems I am lol better check that computer yours not mine.
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
i just put all video on a computer and then time them with free software.
i may not be exactly accurate, but will be within .04 either way generally.
so if i have 7 races where the difference official-me is say about .35, and there is one where the diff is say .85 then i check further.
these days they are mostly accurate(except deep south!), in that the difference between me and official is a constant, but that smoko one was an exception.
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
mailman, the time was actually 57.07, because official timers start while horses are still in the gates, and it is pointless timing them standing still!!

as the way i time is usually .35 faster than official, then i simply add .35 to my time to get the 57.42 and align with the other times that day.
so it is you that is wrong beyond a doubt.

and don't forget to allow for the new barriers that were in use yesterday, that give times that don't align with those of the old barriers.

I think you're both wrong. Carey, I believe you are wrong and would love to catch up for a coffee to explain why. I think you may agree with me once I explain my theory. Anyway, if I ever get to Victoria, I hope you'll come out of your reclusiveness for a cuppa.

    why am i wrong rodent?
    can you explain please?
not foolproof, but every time i find a questionable time, then i get the deviations between actual and expected, once using the official times, and then using what i think they were.
99 times out of 100 my adjustment will mean the deviations become smaller.

i can remember once when you were actually correct(and i was wrong) about what happened when they changed camera angles at the start, but that does no longer apply??
  • RodentRodent    7,470 posts
Yes, I remember that too. I was lucky one day when they changed camera angles at just the right time and the jig was up. That hasn't applied for ages.
Carey, where I think you're wrong will make next to no difference anyway. It's just academic. I will save it for a face to face one day if it ever happens. I want to have something to offer the conversation!

I've been on it every start Piston including its debut so I can't be going too badly, anyway the thread was only put up to inspire conversation about an emerging star. By all means though sidetrack the thread from its subject matter, something I'm continually accused of doing.

not yet he isn't, but he shows all the attributes to be a star in wa.

Well perhaps someone could list say the top three or so 3YO's in WA over a sprint distance that some would think have the potential to perhaps make the jump to Open class or even black type. It would be very good for the local Industry to throw up another Barakey or Miss Andretti, but it would be even better to have the best three or four 3YO's meet in the same race to quantify just how fast this or that one really is.

I was praising you as you found this horse, any chance you can give us the heads up before the next Superstar races.
Bad luck about your girl Sabine last night, I didn't mind the 2.80 about the Frenchie

Damien he does everything so easily, Quokka had trialled very well going into its debut as had Smoko I had a leaning towards Smoko and had a reasonable bet but I saved for something on Quokka but what Smoko did burning them off so easily at the start and travelling throughout was super impressive especially when you take into account the time. Smoko's debut was ultra impressive as was Barakey's and Smoko's was perhaps of even a higher standard.

Quokka's no star but it goes alright, come to think of it poor Popey must be already sick of the sight of Smoko.
