Were the lights on?  If so, whats your problem?

But no, I don't think the track officially opens till 4am?  Been a while, so could be wrong.  BUT, if you get there really early, then there's no chance of the stewards doing a swab (horse or rider), so sometimes worth the risk........

did not go through the main gate but the side gate by little sandown the small sand track next to the course on Mathieson road have to agree with gary h above or maybe that the riders are not allowed to ride on turfclub property because they are already barred

Well it was obviously a pre meditated plan. Very intrigued.

OK, so I'm a late reader of the paper, and only now realised that GSJ wasn't complaining about being woken up.........
So, 4:30am is open time.  I was thinking more along the line of "just got in from a tight arse Tuesday night out, go to bed and wake up in an hour, or work the horses now, and sleep in...."

But the already barred thing floats as well...

99% chance the horse was getting a bit of electrical persuasion.

It was the headless horseman that haunts the racecourse.

on the inner sand?  Your going to jig the horse, you do it on the visco or the grass (seeing there's no one else to see it).  So, I'm thinking your 99% 'notthetruth, I just make **** up....'

I actually thought it to be a reasonable assumption (Gary H). You would need quite the motive to be out there given the possible consequences of being caught, not to mention no lights, safety officer etc.

If you've been barred from riding/training thats enough motivation.
