Very poor acceptances for the 3yo 1000M Race 1 on Saturday. Only 5 starters. Did they call for extended nominations ?

Race 2 is only marginally better, but the quality of the field is fabulous. Umaar, Bad Funk Stripe, Black Nijinsky, and Statewide all recent or last start winners. I think the passage of time will show this to be a very good "form race" moving towards the Summer Carnival.

Extended noms were called for the first two races.
They ended up with about 10 for the first and 15 for the second.
The drop of would have been because most realised they were not winning chances. Then again $10k for running 2nd in the first race is not to be sneezed at.

Looking forward to taking on Black Nijinsky and Umaar. It should give us a good guide as to how high we should be aiming with the Funkmeister.
BN drawn awkwardly. Umaar first-up over 1400m must be a query?
BFS pulled up well from last week, has drawn well and with the #1 hoop onboard, i'm optimistic of another good showing. The 1400m should also suit. We're not sure how he goes on rain effected going if it is wet, but I see that McFlirt's in general go ok.

If the same Umaar turns up he'll hose these.

Without doing the form, on first pass of the fields, I like a few race to race doubles:
    Pike to double races 2&3;
    Dan Morton races 4&5;
Vain Raider onto Kasabian in the last 2.

Looking at the latest weather forecast suggest the track should not be too rain effected, dead at worst.

Does anyone like anything at decent odds - particularly in the quaddie legs?

    Della,
Any chance of adding a poll for race two?
I'd love to see everyone's thoughts.
With no obviuos leader, tactics could be the key.

Probably more a case of the race being a non-event. Kid Choisir 1st, daylight 2nd. $1.50 Kid Chosir would be overs.

Star Laser at $10 e/w not a bad punt - maybe get better on the day tho - barrier one - get the sit, horse is old but can still run

Yes that would have been my response

I don't rate the Belmont Newmarket to previous years running of the event.

Vain Raider is very smart--State record for 1100m and his run last start behind The Machine was a corker--trapped wide and still fighting when first up from a lengthy spell. If he has come through that race OK he will be hard to beat.
  • dungydungy    9,278 posts
agree with you Glenmore but he doesnt run a solid 6 furlongs does he ????
but with the lack of speed he should get a cheap run throughout

Do you have a horse good enough to run in it?

I don't know how that comes into the equation ?

But no Marasco, Dante's Volante, Vizard .....

got $26 on IAS - happy with that

This year two horses are rated above 96, being Star Laser 98 & Mr Diagnosis on 101.

Last year 5 horses were rated above 96 being So Secret 97, Real Mak 98, Mr Diagnosis 98, Tarzi 100, and Vizard on 102 (Winner).

The year before 5 of the 7 runners were rated above 96 being Ripped 96, Real Mak 101, Is Amazing 102, Artic Park 107 & Marasco on 113( Winner) and the fact that Marasco was a confirmed starter probably kept a couple away.

So yes, now that I have looked at the last three years of this Race, I go to my original statement in that it is a disappointing version this year. It doesn't matter a bugger what horses I own.

Considering a week ago they were 2yo's, how many Open 3yo's are there ???
Too high a penalty if not one of the higher rated in the race.

Although, with Kid Choisis in there..........not something they need worry about !
KC by how far, and considering today I was standing on top of a 2,500m Swiss mountain - that's far !!!

Casper Cowboy is $51 IAS - personally I think barrier 11 puts paid to its chances.

ESCADAIRE looks a good chance - IAS betting $15 about it which seems massive overs - I had a nibble on that too

Escadaire looks good odds , although he's boggy horse:Oroya Gold may have something to say about that. Classy Nugget is starting to interest me,
Good race, apart from this race wont be betting .
    Flexi tri : 2,4,5,6,8,9,11.
    Good luck
    :)

You may be right with the rating of above 96 tete, but what you have also done is quote figure to make your statement look a bit better.
Last year there were 8 horses in the race, with 5 being above the 96, and the other 3 having a rating in the high 80's. If you drop it back though to a rating of 94 (yes only 2 points(which is a first or a second in the city) behind 96) there are 8 horses this year, the same amount as made the field last year.
Also, Vain Raider has a rating of 95, and Oroya Gold of 94, now you can say that they wouldn't have made for decent race if they were in it lat year.
And Danebeela has a rating of 84 after just 7 races, i think everyone would be right to think that William Pike will be pushing her to be right in the placings.

You can always look at the glass half full or is it half empty. My point is that if you have more quality runners at the top end of the ratings, you will have a better quality race. The ratings of the also rans at the bottom of the ratings will drag down averages but then so would a field of 16 where there was only 5 chances in reality who could win.

If every horse entered was rated 99, all 16 of them, and thus the average would be higher than most previous years, would it really be a better race ? This sport needs stars. In my opinion I think this race is a good quality Saturday event, it may be the feature on the card, but it is not a standout on the calendar this year.

Good luck to all runners, and yes one day I would like to own a horse good enough to win irrespective of who turns up.

the race is definitely down on quality this year - still a good race tho

    Star Laser $26 into $21
    Escadaire $15 into $10

reckon more than just myself have got on these runners
