    Story from the Herald Sun:

RACING is laced with delicious ironies. Take Atlantic Jewel, who rocketed to favouritism for the Thousand Guineas on the back of the most impressive winner on the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes meeting.
This daughter of Fastnet Rock had graduated to Moonee Valley after winning a nondescript maiden at the Geelong synthetic track a couple of weeks earlier.

    Sound familiar?

Well, cast your mind back to another Mark Kavanagh-trained horse who three years ago debuted with a win at the Geelong synthetic surface then progressed to Moonee Valley where he created quite an impression.

Before that spring was over, that same horse had a Group 1 in the bag. That was how Whobegotyou kick-started his multi-million dollar career.

Atlantic Jewel made a tidy bunch of three-year-old fillies look tres ordinaire.

    Her sectionals were extraordinary.

She ran the fastest final 600m (33.93 seconds), 400m (22.59sec) and 200m (11.52sec). The latter was with jockey Michael Rodd dropping anchor.

.End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
They were the quickest splits not only for the race, but for the meeting.

Rodd explained he told all young riders not to sit up on horses, but he added he also hated winning by panels. And, if he hadn't taken hold, he said, Atlantic Jewel would have won by a space.

It was an emphatic victory by a filly destined to win much better races before this spring is consigned to the archives.

While "Kav" was doing his best to keep a lid on Atlantic Jewel, he acknowledged she was high class and would only get better as the races she contested increased in distance.

That's likely to unfold as Atlantic Jewel heads to the Thousand Guineas where she'll meet Celebrity Girl, the other unbeaten filly trained by Kavanagh, Mosheen and Hallowell Belle.

At least the Thousand Guineas shapes as one Group 1 where the Vics will dominate, because the Sydney colts and geldings - Smart Missile, Helmet and Manawanui and co - appear to be way in front of the locals in the Caulfield Guineas.

Maybe a Murtoa Maiden winner can reshape that view.

Yes, the aptly named Moment Of Change, who sprung to national prominence deep in the heart of the Wimmera, could be just that horse.

We'll gain a better insight at Betfair Park on Wednesday.

It was at this corresponding meeting four years ago that Weekend Hussler burst to prominence. As we said, racing is coated with irony.

Perhaps Bliss Street may be able to take her on, especially over 1600m

    Atlantic Jewel stays unbeaten
The West Australian September 24, 2011, 2:19 pm

Unbeaten filly Atlantic Jewel may go into next month's Thousand Guineas without another run after an impressive victory at Caulfield.

The inquisitive three-year-old appeared to read every sponsor's sign on the infield as she pricked her ears and raced away to a 2-3/4 length victory in Saturday's BMW Handicap (1400m).

Our Miss Jones and Sharnee Rose ran home well for near last to finish second and third respectively to the star filly who won her two other starts at Geelong and Moonee Valley.

Atlantic Jewel is favourite for the Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 12 and trainer Mark Kavanagh said she was every bit as good as stablemate Celebrity Girl who was unbeaten until last week when relegated to fourth on protest in the Guineas Prelude at Caulfield.

He said Celebrity Girl, who is also Thousand Guineas-bound, would contest next Sunday's Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington but was happy with the condition of Atlantic Jewel who continues to put on weight between runs.

"If she keeps improving in herself she (Atlantic Jewel) might go to the Thousand Guineas without another run," Kavanagh said.

"She gives us a pretty good feel and we are very, very excited at this stage," Kavanagh said.

"She hasn't raced in any black-type races and hasn't raced against the best three-year-old fillies at this carnival yet but it will be interesting when she does.

"We have to keep a bit of a lid on it but I rate her up there."

Damien Oliver replaced the suspended Michael Rodd on the filly and said she had great acceleration and had her rivals covered quickly on Saturday.
"She will improve but she doesn't have to get much better," Oliver said.
