West Australian Racing

This maybe not of interest to people who only follow city racing, but as bushie, I spend the summer break down south usually just on the New year for 2/3 weeks and and like to get to the races.

So at this time of the year (January) the population trebles, yet those in the know have one meeting in albany for the month, and it is on Australia Day usually when most holiday goers have headed home.

MT Barker has one meeting in the middle of January, so a very limited scope of 2 meetings in 31 days in the district.

A mate involved with Albany trots however tells me they have 5 meetings in the same period. But get this someone "Wizard" at RWWA programmed a trot meeting the sametime in Albany as the Gallops and Grapes day at the Mt Barker races, (it has since been changed)not for the first time this has happend twice in three years they have programmed two on the same day.

My mates take is how has this person still got a job?

it really does make you wonder loose-goose.
maybe those at RWWA should adopt your nic...cos they sure are a gaggle of geese... :P
it really makes you wonder...surely somebody at RWWA would say "Hang on..."
BUT, if its happened twice in 3 years would somebody from MBRC not contact RWWA and complain? If they have and been fobbed off you have an axe to grind....if not....Mmmmm. :?
  • Yep, plain DUMB !

AND, why do they schedule SUMMER racing for Mt Barker in October when it is they know that the track is gonna be wet ?

Talking to the oldies within the game, they reckon that Barker never had racing until December - DERRR, that's what it should be every year ...

Whoever changed it should change it back and while they're at it, give the other two meetings back to Barker.

Only heard this second hand, but when notified of this clash initially the men in the ivory tower told them too bad you can't change it.

I'm suprised WA doesn't have a big drawcard Boxing Day races, the provincial circuit here in newcastle, seasonally gets crowds upto 2-3000 tops... bigger races like gold cup and james cameron handicap lucky to hit 5k

But Newcastle for Boxing Day races draws in excess of 20,000 every year.

Its a major day over here, stupid for WA not to be doing something like it

Famous1, we use to have the derby on boxing day plus a great supporting card.
it was a huge success but those geese changed it all..now a provintial on the 26th.
if it ain't broke..why fix it??
    got me stuffed...

In the 2010/11 WATA Annual Report, John Burt points out that RWWA have told the Harness Racing industry that it is underperforming in comparison to the two other codes in WA and needs to increase turnover. Fair enough.

RWWA has then taken 15 meeting away from Gloucester Park for 2011/12 and completely scrapped Geraldton.

On the one hand they want increased turnover and with the other hand they make it harder to achieve. RWWA has complete control over the scheduling of race dates and times, handicapping, licensing, and integrity. If they have control of that, what is the indursty supposed to be working on to improve turnover? It is completely in RWWA's control.

Know they have a meeting on Boxing day, I was talking about January 2012, as most holiday goers head that way after the Xmas break, so not there for that meeting.
  • a whole month of holidays in Albany?

    I must be missing out
