He just files the story and photographs are determined by production staff.
I come from a code that cannot get any newspaper coverage whatsover, so why not be grateful and try to take best advantage of what you presently have.
One day you may not have it at all.
Since the demise of papers such as the Daily News, Sunday Independent, Western Mail etc the lack of competition has seen coverage of greyhound racing fall miles behind the other two codes.
This is unlikely to change in the forseeable future.
Coverage of thoroughbreds and harness is something we as a racing industry take for granted but we do so foolishly.
Interestingly the lack of traditional media coverage has not managed to stop the growing popularity of greyhounds as a punting medium, but it does limit the general public from getting to know more about the people that make it tick.
I should come out one night, the trots as well. If for nothing else it would be fun with the camera under lights at night.
Tell me, are there any limitations imposed on photographers by sole licence's issued by the host clubs to resident on course photographers ?
Joe Mulder has been taking photos at the greyhounds since 1975. He is the official on-course photographer but there is no limitations on anyone else also taking commercial photos for time to time. There is no restriction on patrons taking photos, it is in fact encouraged.
From a photographic viewpoint, I am always looking for something different. The Dogs will be a nice break from what I am usually doing.
I will be in touch.
What's more it is not required at all. In an age of digital photography with ultra high film speeds and fast lenses, it just isn't worth the risk.
I attended my first dog meeting at Cannington in December 1974 aged 11 months (so I was told). From there I spent a large chunk of my childhood at Cannington and Mandurah, right through to my teenage years. Love the dogs.
Think one of Dad's dogs still holds the track record for 1000m on the old grass track, they'd start from the 530 boxes and go around twice!
I'm starting to sound old and nostalgic aren't I??
In fact I was, it was a genuine mistake and I apologise to connections of both horses and the punters.
Will not let it happen again.
