Buffering out to break Group 1 duck

Top Brisbane trainer Robert Heathcote says Winterbottom-bound sprinter Buffering will have no excuses if he cannot break his Group I drought in Friday night’s Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Buffering has had 11 of his 28 starts in Group I company but the likes of Black Caviarand Hay List have cast shadows over some remarkable performances from the son of Mossman, causing him to rack up seven minor placings at the highest level.

However, Black Caviar and Hay List will be in spelling paddocks while Buffering leads out the Manikato Stakesfield on Friday night. Heathcote said Buffering’s Group II wins at his first two runs this time in have him at his top for his $750,000 assignment.

"Buffering, he’s about as good as I can get him,” Heathcote said. "There will be no excuses whatsoever for him (if he is beaten).”

Buffering overcame a tardy start to dominate the Moir Stakes (1200m) from the front when resuming over the Manikato Stakes course last month but settled second behind three-year-old filly Malasun before sprinting strongly to win the Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on October 13.

Heathcote said Buffering’s inside draw of barrier one gave jockey Hugh Bowman the flexibility to either share the speed or race behind the leaders without spending too much energy early.

"He’s drawn a nice alley for him, he doesn’t have to work too hard,” Heathcote said.

"What you see is what you get and what we saw the other day was a horse that can take a sit, travel and finish strongly.”

    Odds aside, Buffering is the best horse in the race. Sea Siren beat him in QLD over 1350m, but only by a very short maring. 1200m suits the Buff, where he controls the tempo and kicks away on the corner.
    Sure ready to tip got close a month ago, but it was well noted Buffering was only 80% fit and he still won. Add another 20% fitness, Heathcote really wants this horse to win a group 1. Morale!!

    I was so impressed with We're gonna rocks last run. He is such a professional and can beat buffering on his merits. I wouldn't think sea siren could get near either of them especially first up

    Bowman, should have eased when SS went mad - too scared to let the rail go and Jimmy just backed off and let them run each other out of puff!

    Think Buffering has to hand up the 3rd best Aussie sprinter badge now to SS - she has his number!

    Perfect sit behind the speed when sea siren pressured buffering. I have always measured similarities in short course sprints between MV and Ascot, her versatility and ability to finish off from an on-pace position would make her a massive logistical chance in the Winterbottom if she lobs here in forward condition

    I thought [Bright Hughy] made a blue why didnt he hand up and take a sit ? Buffering won last start sitting outside the leader so why get in a speed battle avg riding IMO
